Resident Evil is the latest film from Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons), starring Austin Abrams and despite knowing basically nothing about the video game franchise, I had an absolute blast with it.
What surprised me most is how well the movie captures the feeling of actually playing a video game without simply trying to recreate one. From the camera work and pacing to Abrams' completely unprepared protagonist, Resident Evil understands what makes these games so much fun.
It's gory, funny, chaotic, and only about 90 minutes long. It may not have a ton of story depth, but I don't think that's really what this movie is trying to do.
This is a movie that knows exactly what it wants to be, and I think it pulls it off.
