When creating 3D textures from photographs, it is necessary to remove highlight and shadow details so they do not become "baked into" the finished texture. I recorded this tutorial for some of my interns for a research project, but I feel it could be useful for others. Unfortunately, I am not able to share the PSD file I mention in the tutorial here on YouTube, but hopefully you are able to see the result well enough to understand the process. Part 1 of 2.
