Today we honor the life and legacy of Sonny Rollins — the “Saxophone Colossus” whose fearless approach to improvisation and unmistakable voice on the tenor saxophone helped shape the course of modern jazz.
A Harlem native, Walter Theodore Rollins grew up during a pivotal era for jazz in New York City, developing a sound that was full-bodied, deeply expressive, and instantly recognizable.
Among his vast and celebrated body of work are landmark recordings released with Prestige, Contemporary, Riverside, and Milestone, including Saxophone Colossus and Way Out West — albums that remain defining works of the genre. Saxophone Colossus was later preserved in the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry in recognition of its cultural and historical significance.
A three-time GRAMMY Award winner and recipient of the Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award, Rollins leaves behind an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
