Deep in the Amazon rainforest, indigenous leader Benki Piyãko is rebuilding what destruction tried to erase.
At Yorenka, a forest once fragmented by farming, mining, and cattle ranching is coming back to life—tree by tree, species by species.
Here, the forest is not exploited but cultivated as a living system. Açaí, medicinal plants, native cattle, wildlife, and people coexist in a model of self-sufficiency rooted in ancestral knowledge. Reforestation replaces burning. Indigenous cattle graze under the canopy instead of turning land into desert. Every tree cut is answered by hundreds planted.
But this way of life is under constant threat: illegal hunting, land grabs, industrial farming, mining, oil drilling, and political systems that favor money over protection. As wildlife disappears and violence rises, defending the forest has become a matter of survival.
