DEADLY GASSES inside the RED PYRAMID Ancient Presence 2023-03-20 | We explored the three inner chambers of the Red Pyramid at Dashur in Egypt. This pyramid is thought to be built during the Fourth Dynasty by Sneferu around 2600 BCE. The entrance to the pyramid is located on the north face. Visitors enter the pyramid through a narrow, 200 foot corridor. The first thing you notice when you enter the first chamber is that it has the same type of gabled roof that the Grand Gallery in the great pyramid has. All three chambers have gabled roofs, probably used to distribute the weight of the pyramid blocks above. We were starting to smell ammonia from bat poop that got stronger and stronger as we approached the staircase to the third chamber. The ammonia was so bad when we arrived that we could only stay in there for long enough to snap a quick photo. The room was absolutely destroyed, probably by tomb raiders. On our way out, we saw more signs of what appears to be explosions, maybe from tomb robbers? Then we made our ascent back out into the light of day.

Even though this structure is known as the Pyramid of Djedefre, it is actually unknown if it was ever even a pyramid to begin with, or if Djedefre was even responsible for building it. There are many theories about this structure floating around online, ranging from it being a star observatory to an exploded pyramid. We had a fun time exploring this mysterious structure during the sunset hour after a full day in the sun at the Giza pyramids.
