Abstract: Metasurfaces based on sub-wavelength patterning have major potential for realizing arbitrary control of the wavefront of the diffracted light by achieving local control of the phase amplitude and polarization. We discuss novel devices based on this technique; a salient feature is the ability to create often with a single digital mask an arbitrary analog phase profile. A variety of flat optical components, including lenses, polarizers, vortex plates, coatings, holograms and couplers with polarization invariant coupling efficiency will be presented.

A brief review of the basic principles of radiometry and atmospheric propagation (absorption, emission, and scattering) is followed by a system-level discussion of various ground--, air--, and space-based remote sensing systems.

As reported in Advanced Photonics, a team of researchers from Shanghai Jiao Tong University recently constructed a synthetic stub lattice along the frequency dimension. They used two coupled rings of different lengths, while the larger ring underwent dynamic modulation.
Their study, which was the first such experimental demonstration, observed and verified the intrinsic physical properties of such lattices, especially the natural existence of the flat (dispersionless) band.
A group led by researchers at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology surveys strategies for building white-light emitters and ways to bridge the photophysical properties of organic molecules and aggregates, to provide a general platform for practical applications and academic research.

Reza Khorasaninejad has a unique background in technology-driven science. Both his Ph.D. and Postdoc inventions have been commercialized through two separate startups. When he was a Research Scientist at Harvard, he invented the first efficient metalens across the visible range (Khorasaninejad et al. Science 352, 2016, featured as cover article). His work on metalenses was selected by the World Economic Forum as one of the "Top Ten Emerging Technologies" of the Year 2019. Currently, as Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Brelyon Inc. he has been focused to bring some of his innovative nano-photonics solutions into the consumer product.
