After Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, the great founders of scientific socialism in the 19th century, VI Lenin was the single most important Marxist theoretician ever to have lived. Not only was he a brilliant student of Marxism, but he applied this philosophical, economic and political understanding in the most brilliant way to solving the problems facing the urban factory workers, the poor agricultural population and the oppressed nations suffering under tsarist rule during the period of decaying, monopoly capitalism – the period of imperialism.Since monopoly capitalism is the economic system that still dominates our world, the answers Lenin came up with to the problems facing his own movement are still extremely relevant to workers in the west today, if we want to win our freedom from capitalist exploitation; if we want to build a world in which our children can have fulfilling lives, developing their potential, making a meaningful contribution to society, and enjoying the fruits of their labours in peace, dignity, prosperity and security.In 30 years of political activity, Lenin left behind a huge collection of books, pamphlets, articles, speeches and letters, any page of which can give the reader a lesson in Marxist science and its application to real-world situations. But Lenin didn’t write in an ivory tower as an intellectual exercise. Having understood very young from his experience of capitalist society and his study of Marxism that the only way out of the downward spiral of poverty, crisis and war was socialism, he dedicated himself to working on bringing that change into being.As a result, Lenin lived and breathed socialist revolution. Charged with sedition by the Russian authorities for the first time in 1896, when he was just 26 years old, he was sentenced after a year in a St Petersburg jail to three years’ exile in Siberia. On his release, he set up a distribution network for an underground all-Russian workers’ newspaper (revolutionary literature was banned by the government, so illegal means had to be found to get the information into the hands of the people) before going into exile to edit and print the paper in western Europe and then to arrange for physical copies to be smuggled back into Russia. The networks that were set up in the course of this work went on to form the basis of Russia’s Marxist party, the Russian Social-Democratic Labour Party. When that organisation split, the revolutionary wing led by Lenin become known as the Bolsheviks.

In the background I can hear the familiar sounds of artillery fire, the blasts from the heroic air defences working to keep the people safe, the blasts from incoming - often western-supplied missiles, alerts from the menace of drones that strike fear into the residents here.We hear these sounds are because of the failures of the Minsk Agreements. These accords should have been the framework that brought peace to the region, an end to aggression and the suffering of the civilian population.It was hard to sell the accords to the people here. They had to be persuaded to stay within a federated Ukraine, with more autonomy, with the rights to speak Russian, for many their mother tongue, with the right to practice their traditions and culture without fear.But they accepted it. They believed the guarantees offered by France and Germany along with the Kiev government. Time has proved they were wrong to do so. We know now that France and Germany had no intention of abiding by Minsk 1 or 2 - we heard from the horses mouths themselves. The failure of Minsk is also your failure. Nations not united and a Council that provides no Security. This is how the people see you when I spoke to them, on which I will expand later.As we know, before February 2022 there was a road to peace, and a road to war. Unfortunately many of the most powerful nations on the planet chose the latter. They brought war to some of the world’s poorest people and in the most brutal way imaginable.This conflict didn’t start in February 2022 for the people of Donbass. It started back in 2014 when the Ukrainian government launched airstrikes on its own people in Lugansk. When armed neoNazi militias controlled the streets, killing at will and with impunity.The failure of Minsk has real life consequences - with homes, hospitals and infrastructure destroyed as thousands dead as a result, deaths that could have been avoided.Behind the statistics are people with families, people who are loved, people with names. Like Lyudmila, Natasha, Viktoria and Irina. - killed in a terror attack the Kievsky district of Donetsk city a few weeks ago.Ukrainian forces fired western-weapons into a busy marketplace, 27 people were massacred. Old men and women selling homemade items at the side of the road, women baking bread. Of course I expect the usual platitudes, that Russia is responsible for the killings, that it is the aggressor. Stock answers, superficial, but an insult to the memory of the dead and an insult to those living under constant shelling with western-supplied weapons.The dead don’t have a voice, but the living do. And they are not afraid of Vladimir Putin, they are not afraid of Russia - who they see as protecting them from a potential genocide, the same that you are failing to stop in Gaza. They are afraid of you, of the member states sitting around this table who instead of talking about peace, about security, about an end to conflict…agree more money and more arms to Ukraine to rain down on their communities.But in the space of a few weeks we saw 27 killed in a marketplace, 28 in a bakery in Lisichansk, three killed outside a busy supermarket, next to the busiest thoroughfare in Donetsk - the scene of which me and my team came under fire from - we saw an attempt to strike the Palace of Culture when people were gathered there for an event, with an emergency worker, Nikita Danilov, killed.These are deliberate acts of terror, designed for maximum casualties and to break the will of the people. But these are not simply Ukrainian acts of terror, these are western-sponsored war crimes, and they are committed here on a daily basis.I found remnants of the missile used in the attack - these are usually used to take out air defences or the like - and it was made in the United States, with an expiry date of 31st March 1991! Out of date stocks being rushed to the frontline. This was just a week after an AGM-88 HARM crashed into a babushka’s living room on the 9th floor of an apartment block, She was killed as her daughter and granddaughter slept in the room next door.Among the blood and the rubble I saw a children’s tiara, dress up shoes, a colouring book. The impact on children cannot be understated 230 killed and 846 wounded since the conflict began.Drones are now also more of a menace - 97 shot down over Donetsk city and Makeevka in just three days. In January 966 drones were taken down over Donetsk, Makeevka and Gorlovka with 200 attacks prevented.

November 25, Dr. Ranjeet Brar and three members of the UK CPGB-ML were arrested at the national Palestine solidarity demo for manning a table selling a book critical of the history of Zionism that was published nine years ago and has since been distributed widely. They were told that the book might constitute an ‘incitement to racial hatred’ for which they were held in isolation for 24 hours before being released on bail.While imprisoned, their families were subjected to 3:00 AM raids, during which police seized phones, laptops, and party literature. When they were set free the following day, it was on the condition that they should not sell or distribute leaflets or pamphlets, deviate from the main routes of any march, or “carry swastikas” (!) The cases are pending until February.Then, on the 13th of January, while proceedings were being brought against Israel in the International Court of Justice on charges of genocide and British bombers attacked Yemen, another huge London demonstration in solidarity with Palestine was targeted – this time not in a hunt for ‘antisemites’ but for ‘terrorist sympathizers’.Some fifty officers descended on CPGB ML supporters, surrounding them and confiscating their literature (the leaflet that they seized had been distributed at every Palestine demonstration since October). Three supporters were arrested. The justification for the arrests was that the leaflet “supported Hamas, a banned organization” in breach of the 2000 UK Terrorism Act.Three comrades were arrested, taken to Hammersmith police station, and held for 28 hours, during which time their homes were raided by large squads of anti-terror police. The legislation used to justify our comrades’ arrest (an extension of the ‘anti-terror’ law that was first enacted at the time of the Irish liberation war in the 1970s) gives the UK government wide ranging and draconian powers to act against its citizens – if they are allowed to establish the precedent of using it freely against the pro-Palestine anti-Zionist protesters.Our speaker, Ranjeet Brar, is a pro-Palestine, anti-Zionist activist, journalist, author, and member of the Communist Party of Great Britain (ML), which is being prosecuted for Palestine solidarity activism. The ICJ failed to order the Zionist state to cease its fire, but left the way open for the UN - indeed mandating the UN - to do so.Ranjeet talks about the history of the Zionist ideology and its adoption by British and then US imperialism to pursue their imperial ambitions in their newly conquered territories wrested from the Ottoman Empire after WW1.The mandate of Palestine was to become “a loyal Jewish Ulster in a sea of potentially hostile Arabism”, according to British military governor of the “Palestinian Mandate”, Ronald Storrs.In other words, “The zionist state of Israel is a dagger aimed at the heart of the Arab people’s revolutionary-democratic movement.”He moves on to note that the repression against the palestine solidarity movement in Britain has been led and directed by Zionist forces and groups (Harrys Place, campaign against antisemitism, Labour Friends of Israel, Conservative friends of Israel, zionist preachers such as Mr Cohen, etc.) that have close links to our state and politicians.This is all because it serves the wider interests of British and US monopoly capital, to plunder the wealth of the middle east - the same reasons for the Iraq and Afghan, Yemen, Syrian and Libyan wars and occupations. And that is the reason both for his own ridiculous yet sinister and repressive arrests, and for the far more sinister and heinous “blessing”, aiding and abetting of the criminal Israeli Genocide in Palestine, by Rishi Sunak and Kier Starker, Labour and Tory alike.It is crucial that we gain knowledge, spread that knowledge and keep up the pressure on our own government in new and creative ways. As the Yemenis have shown, putting pressure on the profits of the capitalists, stopping the machine of propaganda, exploitation, and military suppression from working - as a prelude to overthrowing their despicable and senile rule entirely - are the most effective tools with which to aid our Palestinian Brothers and Sisters.We note that even this student organised meeting came under heavy pressure from the Zionists and British State, and the university security team and students’ union prevented perhaps one hundred ticket holders from entering as “they are not students”.
