Linux never wouldβve existed, according to Linus Torvalds himself, if either the 386BSD (thwarted by AT&Tβs lawsuit against BSD, since AT&T owned the Unix copyrights) or GNU Hurd (thwarted by the lack of development effort) was available at the time, because he wouldnβt had been interested in writing his project. But luckily for us, he did.
*I meant MAKING Linux, not USING Linux.

From a hobby project in 1991 to one of the most widely used operating systems in the world, the development of Linux is a remarkable story of collaboration, innovation, and open-source software. Linux, for those that donβt know, is a community of open-source operating systems developed on top of the Linux kernel - the core of the operating system, responsible for managing resources, providing access to hardware, and communicating with other software.
One could say it all started in 1991 when Linus Torvalds, a computer science student at the University of Helsinki, started working on the operating system as a hobby project. He was frustrated with the proprietary nature of existing operating systems and wanted to create a free and open-source alternative that anyone could use and contribute to. A kernel that could be independent of any OS and be used on his hardware, the new Intel 80386 microprocessor. But it began 22 years earlier. This is the story of the development of the Linux kernel and the GNU/Linux operating system.
I hope you enjoyed it. Making these videos about computer science history is quickly becoming a passion of mine, with many more to come, so if you liked this one, subscribe to the channel as Iβm sure youβll like the ones to come, like when we dive into the GNU project. Any and all recommendations for future videos are welcome in the comments. Until next time, yβall have a good one.

ChatGPT is a chatbot developed by OpenAI and launched in November 2022. It is built on top of OpenAI's GPT-3 family of large language models and has been fine-tuned using both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques. Everyone is absolutely obsessed with it, and today I want to talk about why.

An MVP is the version of a product with just enough features for use to validate a product idea, without investing a lot of time and resources upfront. But what if I told you thereβs a right way and a wrong way to go about building your MVP? Well along with some famous real-world examples, thatβs what weβll be discussing in this video. The real way you should build an MVP, not the misconstrued understanding many people have of it today.

I want to tell you how to be a more efficient software developer. Now, my βWhy I Code for 4 Hoursβ video touches on the broader spectrum of how I am able improve efficiency in life that drips into my work as a software developer. This video is to get into the nitty-gritty details that are specific to developers, like taking time to master your IDE, refactoring your code, not over-engineering your solutions or reinventing the wheel, having a set of coding standards and style guidelines that you stick by, or even something as simple as learning keyboard shortcuts. Now, many of these things may take some time to accomplish up-front, but you have to weigh the time savings. Youβll find the long-term gain heavily outweighs the short-term loss.
This is what I implore you to do. Become an efficient programmer by following the things laid out in this video. You wonβt be able to implement everything all at once. But pick one or two and start. Then pick up another few when you feel confident youβve accomplished and can maintain the prior two. A comment with something you learned here today that maybe youβll start implementing tomorrow will be greatly appreciated. Enjoy!

As you may know, I built a minimal developer portfolio website. Not just the GitHub profile page from last video. Or the Terminal Website from earlier this year. But a custom website with an intuitive, minimal design that gives a prospective client a quick look at you and your work as a developer. And now, I've decided to create a tutorial to teach you how to build this exact website for yourself.
The tools I used for this project include:
Vite - Build tool for the boilerplate and structure
JavaScript - Programming language
React - JavaScript library for building user interfaces
Tailwind - CSS framework
Hostinger - Web hosting platform

The command line interface. A program that accepts text input to execute operating system functions. It used to be the only way we could interact with computers back in the 60s. And in the 1970s and 1980s, command line input was commonly used by Unix systems and PC systems like MS-DOS and Apple DOS. Today, however, we have lost our way. With GUIs, or graphical user interfaces, most users *never* use command-line interfaces (CLI). Except for us, the chosen ones. The software developers and system administrators of the world, we use the CLI to configure computers, install software, and access features that are not available in the graphical interface. But not only that, it increases productivity. Itβs one of those things where you put more time in on the frontend to learn, but once you do, you will get that time back in droves (10 fold). So in this video, I want to share with you the most prevalent command line tools used today.
Letβs start off with the shell. It is the first thing you see when opening a terminal. But itβs not the same as the terminal. The terminal itself is actually a terminal emulator - a program that opens a window and lets you interact with the shell. That would be your GNOME terminal, Windows Terminal, Xterm, Alacritty. But the shellβ¦ In Linux, we usually use the word shell to refer to the main command-line interface on which we execute programs called commands. This would be your C shell, Z shell, Korn shell, Bourne shell, bash, or even Windows PowerShell. Itβs the thing that allows interaction between the user and the kernel. So when you type in ls, the shell executes theΒ lsΒ command. The shell can also execute other programs such as applications, scripts, and user programs.
With one of those programs being our next tool, the text editor. Which allows you to edit text using the command line interface, like code, READMEs, and git commit messages. This would be your Vi, VIM, Neovim, GNU nano, Emacs, Gedit, and so on. Some are just basic text editors, like nano, whereas developers typically use more customizable and extensive text editors like Vim, not because they like it more, but because they canβt figure out how to exit.
Some of these command line tools come default on many systems, but many of them youβll have to install yourself. Thatβs where our next tool comes into play, the package manager. Package managers ease the process of installing software. You can think of it as an app store for the command line, even before app stores were even a thing. This would be your apt, dpkg, pacman, homebrew. Or you may be more familiar with some application-level package managers such as yarn and npm. A package manager allows you to install, configure, audit, upgrade, or remove software packages and dependencies. From your operating system, in the context of the former list.
Now my favorite tool name, the fuzzy finder, aka an interactive Unix filter. It can be used with any list, files, command history, processes, hostnames, bookmarks, lines of code, git commits, and so on. Itβs effectively file search for everything using their fuzzy finder algorithm. So if you know the type of file, or a word in a file name or the file path or commit message or code or whatever, you just run the fuzzy finder and start typing to find what youβre looking for, system wide. Or specify to only search project wide. And the algorithm will filter out everything that doesnβt match. You can think of it as real time grep. Itβs incredibly convenient and saves a lot of time.
I know there are many, many more command line tools out there. Which would be the first youβd recommend to a friend? Leave a comment below and enjoy the video.

I made a custom GitHub profile page thatβs visually stunning and incredibly easy to make. Because, βall software developers need a portfolioβ - this is the title of a video I made 2-3 years ago, and it still holds true. But now, well as of two years agoβ¦ but still now, you can easily do that with a custom GitHub Profile README file. It allows you to turn your bland GitHub profile into a beautifully custom, and professional web page like this, that tells the story of your work through your lens, just as I have with mine. And today, Iβm going to show you how I created my custom GitHub Profile README, and how you can do it too.

The examples I showed actually aren't included in this discount, but there are free plans for all APIs on the platform.
I have 5 programming projects of varying skill levels that will help you get to the next level of programming, with the last one being a project that will help you obtain a software development job.
Our three levels are:
1. One, beginner. Youβre learning how to implement programming fundamentals in a practical way. Youβre very much a beginner, but Iβm not gonna make it easy, just straight forward so itβs not so convoluted. I donβt want you getting distracted by frameworks and libraries and all this crap. The applications are going to run in the console, and we actually have 3 projects in this category, each of a different skill level.
2. Two, intermediate. Youβre dipping your toes in real-world development. Something where the skills directly transfer over from these projects to real-world projects, and you may even learn some software engineering fundamentals as well.
3. And three, advanced. Youβre a full-fledge software engineer. I mean full-stack, but youβre still solo. So the frontend doesnβt have to be beautiful. The backend may need some heavy refactoring, and your technical debt is through the roof, but you get to break everything down just as a software engineer would in a team. You create the MVP and start building that out feature by feature, until you have a full-fledge application.
There are two ways to go about programming projects. One is to work on a project thatβs more on the hobby level, not meaning unprofessional, but something that you want to build. Like my AI that shot me in the face when I got distracted. Or when I used the YouTube Data API to pull dislike counts and create a comment and post it under my existing YouTube videos. Something useful that makes your life easier, or just for fun. You learn a lot by building projects like this because when you are interested in something youβre more inclined to learn about it.
The other is tactical. You know that you will learn from this and it will help you get a job. This is my focus for today, because Iβm not gonna sit here and say βbuild something fun, okay thanks for watching lolβ because at the end of the day if you had something like that in mind, then you would probably be working on it instead of watching this video. Iβm just sayinβ. But uhh... enjoy! lol

And two is face tracking that tracks my face using a webcam attached to a dart blaster attached to pan/tilt servo motors that use coordinates sent through an Arduino to aim at my face, and shoot me (with darts).
NVIDIA is definitely one of my favorite partners to work with, so if you're in the market for a laptop or learning AI skills, I'd truly appreciate it if you used the links provided in the description!
And aside from that, who wants a Distractibot 420? Full production model available for pre-order now, and we'll start shipping them out ASAP!
And for those that don't get my sarcasm... that is a joke. This is an exclusive 1 of 1.π

As someone who oftentimes struggles to stay focused & productive, I'm constantly trying new things to combat that struggle. Well when it comes to coding, I've finally found something that works for me! That is, I code for 4 hours with no breaks. I disregard any advice regarding the Pomodoro Technique. I ensure I have no distractions. And I try my best to stay healthy, mentally & physically, so that I can successfully implement this 4 hour code block.
In this video, I want to lay out why I feel this works for me, and how I'm able to accomplish it. Enjoy!

My focus lately as a developer has been building websites & web apps, and VS Code is the main tool I use to get that done. It's the most popular IDE/code editor among developers, according to the 2022 Stack Overflow Developer Survey. So, I want to show you how I use VS Code, my preferred extensions, my current theme, and my favorite VS Code settings that Iβve been using for many different types of web development.

Software architecture for a web application is essentially the blueprint for how a web app is structured. There's monolithic architecture, where you basically piled everything into a single, tightly coupled codebase. But if you want to efficiently scale your app from 100 users to 100,000 users, or want to ensure adding a line of code to a certain component or feature doesnβt break the entire application, then you may want to take a look at the microservice architecture. In the same realm, there's serverless architecture. There's also a higher level of architecture: client-server and peer-to-peer.
When it comes to web app architecture, there are so many different types & many of which arenβt even exclusive from one another. So Iβve broken these down, put them into levels that are actually comparable, and created explanations in a way for you to simply understand the different types of web app architecture, why theyβre important, how they play into software development, and given your requirements, goals, and possibilities, which app architecture is best for your app. I hope this helps. Enjoy!

Across all computer science programs, while there are differences, there are similarities that cannot be changed. Computer Science theory & most software engineering fundamentals remain the same.
Not too long ago I went over my favorite computer science program of all time with yβall, which was a Wrestling Tournament Simulation from my Advanced Data Structures & Algorithms course, because that was the program that just made everything click for me. But again, that was never the plan for that video. I had wanted to go through a handful of different programs & explain what the point of them were, which was implementing the theory that we had just learned, using code. That is now this video - remastered.
We take a look at a handful of different programs that I wrote as a computer science student for a specific class. So I take you through what CS class it was, what we learned in that class, how the math or computer science theory translates into programming, and the program itself. Enjoy!

It's finally time I make a personal website, and nothing's cooler than a terminal website build with pure html, css, and javascript that contains a few little things about me. Oh, and some Easter eggs. This is not my final personal website. I'll be making something a bit more professional next month, but I always wanted to code a terminal website, so I took the opportunity to do so. Enjoy!

This is a way to run a GNU/Linux environment directly on Windows, unmodified, without the overhead of a traditional virtual machine or dualboot setup. The command-line tools, utilities, and applications youβre used to, and without the stupid backslashes that for some reason Windows has yet to change.
The program I built to test it out - a code racing website to put your typing skills to the test, but more on that next video. Letβs talk WSL, the system Iβve been averse to ever since its initial release 6 years ago.

I've been putting off upgrading my cooling for a solid 3 years. Now it's time to finally build the custom water cooling loop I've been wanting for so long! I use this PC for video & photo editing, software development/coding, gaming, machine learning, and so much more. The PC handles everything just fine, but I'm hoping to bring down those temperatures with the custom water cooling loop, which is the Corsair Hydro X Series. And I mean, come on - the custom water cooling loop just looks so cool!

I'm not a fan of YouTube removing the dislike count from all videos, so I decided to put the discount like back on my own channel with a little bit of code. That was done in this video: youtu.be/1uAH93tzfQY
But hashing out the code in just a day led to a few bugs, issues, and things I had to put on the backburner. So let's fix those bugs and address some of those issues.

The only problem with open source is exactly what Streamlabs did to OBS. We discussed this in a recent video regarding the worst take on open source I've ever seen, where the issue was enforcing the open source license you have on your open source project. But here, Streamlabs is above board - legally speaking - but has found a way around it to disrespect what open source is all about and eventually sell their company for $89 million to Logitech. All of that money by just copying other products already on the market.

We just talked about how to prepare for a developer job interview, and how to handle the rejection that may come with it, but we didn't talk about how to get to that job interview - the skills it takes, the prep, and how most entry level programmer job listings are poorly written, so you should just ignore most of the job "requirements" listed.

Most programmers have been rejected from a developer job that they really wanted, but not all know how to use that experience to better themselves for the next one. That's what we discuss in this video.
1. Emotional Response - accept that it happened so you can go back and learn from it to help you succeed in the next one. Don't say "whatever, that's behind me. I'm just gonna focus on the next" because there's valuable information in your experience.
2. Ask for Feedback - After being rejected, ask them why. And tell them you want to know so that you can improve in that aspect. Remember to always be polite.
3. Reflect on the Interview Process - this is why you accepted that it happened instead of forgot that it happened. You need to be honest with yourself. What part did you feel went well? What part not so much? What part did you feel less confident? How did the interviewers respond to your answers - not just in what they said, but how they looked? All of this is valuable information to help you improve.
4. Improve Where You're Lacking - Whatever you found out from the interviewer, or from your own recollection, improve it. This could be coding projects, technical interview, promptness, resume, your knowledge of their company, or even how you formatted your email. Or, it could've been due to your soft skills. I'm not the best teacher in this space as I feel it's difficult to teach and learn, since you're changing a lot of who you are, but here are a few tips if you know soft skills is what's keeping you from getting that job.
a. Look them in the eyes. Don't stare at them, but frequently make eye contact instead of just staring at the desk or your resume. Especially when you're talking. When you look away too much they may think that you're lying.
b. When they nod, you nod. Do what they do. It makes them think that you're listening.
c. Try not to fiddle around too much. Show more confidence.
d. Basically, you have to con them lol - but only in your soft skills to make yourself more likeable. I mean, many individuals can do the job but fail at this aspect based on the interviewer's bias. Just like many can do the job but fail the technical interview because they don't know a particular algorithm. But if that's the case, just go to algoexpert.io/forrest. Use code "forrest" for a discount. If you want to confidently pass the technical interview, algoexpert is the place for it.
5. Always Be Learning - throughout this whole process, remember to continue harnessing your skill that you need for the job you want. Coding your own web apps will not only do just that, but will also look good on your portfolio.
6. And overall, just perfect these aspects of the interview. The skills to do the job - that should be a given and something that you actually know. The skills to pass the technical interview, because that's a beast in and of itself. The skills to be likeable - the soft skills - because no one wants to work with someone they don't think they'll like. And a random tip - make sure you know about the company for which you're applying. You can't go in there and they ask "okay, what is your understanding of our company?" or "what do you like most about our company?" but you have no response because you actually don't know.
Hope this helped! If so, press the like button. Thanks :)

After getting a comment about how software programmers shouldn't call themselves engineers, I decided to revive an old video topic - that I originally trashed - about developer job titles and the differences between them.

After finding an article about why the author dislikes open source, I came to the conclusion that the opinions in this article were formed based on false information. That's why I want to go through it together so we can all have a better understanding of open source and address any misconceptions that you may have about it.

As a web developer, this is how I plan my coding projects to maximize enjoyment & efficiency while coding my own projects. It may be slightly different in other areas of development, but I believe the principles remain the same. And it will be different when working for in a team at a company, and maybe even for a client, as you need to get others up to speed rather than just sitting back enjoying the coding. Either way, I hope you gained something from this video that is solely based on my own experience and what I find best works for me. Enjoy!

How many programming languages should you learn? Well if you're starting out... one. But which programming language is heavily dependent upon your goal. Or throw your goal out the window and just learn C, because... well I tell you in this video.
I do encourage everyone to eventually lean multiple programming languages, but only after you gain a solid understanding of your first. Do NOT jump around from language to language just learning the basics of each.

Itβs time to get back coding the YouTube leaderboard. Today, we will be coding the front end using React JS. It is not complete but I've put together the leaderboard using React Table and built a header needed for the MVP.
I've also teamed up with Linode on this project and will be setting up the hosting in a future video in this series. If you have an app, I'd recommend hosting it with Linode. And I'd appreciate you using my link for the $100 Linode credit. I'll talk more about Linode in a future video. They really are great! bit.ly/linode-forrest

Just build it. These three words can heavily motivate someone to get started on something. But other times it begs the question, βwhat if I donβt know how to build it? What if I donβt know where to start?β There's a "secret" to it, but you won't like the answer. Just know that you don't need to know everything about a programming language, or hardly even anything about coding and software development, to get started.

A hacker group named #DarkSide extorted $90,000,000 in #Bitcoin from 47 victims of their ransomware attack - during a span of only 9 months. The most popular hack being that of Colonial Pipeline, where they extorted 75 Bitcoin ($4.4 Million at the time) and caused the shutdown of the United States' largest oil pipeline, causing pandemonium across the southeast. If you're unfamiliar with the criminal business model ransomware-as-a-service, the way DarkSide operates may be a bit different than what you'd expect from a typical hacker group. But today, you will learn what this hacker group is all about, because this is the story of DarkSide Ransomware.
