Blast back to May 1992 and step inside the original, now extinct, version of Star Tours at Disney-MGM Studios in Walt Disney World! 🚀✨ This rare POV from my archives (@RobFuz) captures the ride exactly as it was in the early ’90s — long before Galaxy’s Edge, before the randomized missions, and before Disney even owned Star Wars.
This is pure, untouched theme park history. 🎞️🌠
🏛️ A Little History
• Star Tours opened at Disney-MGM Studios on December 15, 1989, bringing George Lucas’ galaxy to Florida for the very first time.
• The attraction used a groundbreaking motion simulator system, placing guests aboard the StarSpeeder 3000 with the lovable but inexperienced pilot Captain Rex (RX-24) — voiced by Paul Reubens.
• The ride film was directed by George Lucas, making it one of the earliest major collaborations between Lucasfilm and Disney.
• This original version ran for over 20 years before closing in September 2010 to make way for Star Tours – The Adventures Continue.
• Your 1992 footage captures the attraction in its prime — the queue, the droids, the Endor-bound chaos, and the classic ’80s/’90s Star Wars aesthetic.
🤩 Fun Facts
• Captain Rex was brand new at the time — this was his first day on the job… forever.
• The original ride only had one storyline, making every trip identical — and fans loved it.
• The queue featured some of the earliest examples of in-park Star Wars humor, including droid banter and Easter eggs.
• The StarSpeeder 3000 model was so iconic that it appears in later Star Wars media as a nostalgic nod.
