Meänkieli is one of Sweden’s five official minority languages. It's spoken by Tornedalians, who are one of Sweden’s five official national minorities. The native region of Tornedalians is Torne Valley, which borders to Finland and has a long, cross-cultural history.
Together with Sweden’s four other official minorities – Jews, Roma, the Sami and Swedish Finns – Tornedalians have special protection under Swedish law.
