In this video I show you two license-free digital radios from Radioddity.
The maximum range is achieved in my opinion only under ideal conditions.
Realistic is to assume a shorter range, because houses, trees and other obstacles swallow the signal with increasing distance.
Since, according to the law, PMR446 radios are not allowed to have a replaceable antenna and only a very low transmission power of 0.5 watts, it is perfectly normal that these radios are only intended for short-range use.
At first glance, a short range seems disadvantageous, but if you think about it, it also has advantages.
In a city with many users, e.g. the simultaneous transmission on the same channel are rather avoided, so users are not constantly bothering each other on the only 8-16 available PMR frequencies.
In addition, the low output power protects the battery, and you can use the radios so longer.
In addition, with a high range and more people could overhear, which is also avoided by the weak transmission power. Because a potential eavesdropper would always have to be close enough to receive the signal at all.
In my test, the communication was very possible, however, the quality can decrease with increasing distance.
As I said that is perfectly normal, and so provided by law.
Although the range was significantly shorter in the analogue test than with other devices, for home use, the close environment, or camping, you can still use the very compact digital radios well.
However, the configuration via software can be significantly more complicated for beginners or people using a Mac, because you have to use Windows and install a USB driver.
