Restoring Florida’s Shoal Bass Population: Post-Hurricane Michael FWC Research 2025-01-17 | Shoal Bass (Micropterus cataractae) are one of Florida’s native black bass and are listed as a species of greatest conservation need by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The Chipola River is a tributary of the Apalachicola River and home to the only naturally reproducing population of shoal bass known to exist in the state of Florida. Due to being habitat specialists, shoal bass tend to have low population density in rivers where suitable habitat is limited. In 2018, Hurricane Michael depleted more than 90% of the shoal bass population in the Chipola River. As a direct management action following the hurricane, the FWC passed an Executive Order that suspended harvest and possession of shoal bass, that EO was later adopted into rule and remains in place today. FWC freshwater fisheries biologists and managers have successfully released over 11,000 hatchery-raised shoal bass fingerlings into the Chipola River. This effort marks the first time genetically pure shoal bass have been successfully raised in an FWC fish hatchery. The goal of raising and releasing these fish is to enhance the wild population of shoal bass to help maintain the population’s genetic purity and aid in the long-term conservation of this unique species of Florida black bass.Learn More: myfwc.com/research/about/archive/shoal-bass

Researching the Movements of Urban American Crocodiles FWC Research 2025-01-08 | Crocodile and human populations in Florida have increased since the 1970s, particularly over the last 15 years. As a result, human-crocodile encounters have also increased. To address conflicts with this threatened species, limited management options are available such as educating complainants and translocating crocodiles. Because these options can be labor-intensive and have mixed results, strategies for conflict avoidance are desirable. Successful strategies would result in fewer conflicts and safer conditions for both crocodiles and humans. This study uses satellite/GPS telemetry to learn about the movements and behaviors of crocodiles in urbanized areas. Specifically, we will evaluate how human activities affect crocodile movements, factors involved in road crossings, and habitats that are utilized by crocodiles in urban surroundings. Coral Rescue: 2019 Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease Rescue Cruise 5 FWC Research 2024-09-23 | Late October 2019 researchers from FWC, The Florida Aquarium and University of Miami, conducted the last coral rescue cruise of the year. Corals were collected from pinnacle reef sites near the Dry Tortugas and 158 corals were delivered to the intermediate care facility at the University of Miami on October 31st.During 2019, a total of 1,573 corals were collected during three trips near Key West and five rescue cruises around the Marquesas and the Dry Tortugas. FWC’s Coral Rescue Team is extremely grateful to all 29 cruise participants who assisted in the rescue of Florida’s corals – that will be used for future coral restoration projects in response to the devastating stony coral tissue loss disease.

Replenishing Seagrass from Seedlings FWC Research 2024-07-19 | For decades, FWRI scientists have carefully monitored seagrass health throughout Florida, witnessing both alarming die-offs and encouraging signs of recovery. Assessing Black Bear Cubs - Southwest Florida Bear Project FWC Research 2024-07-18 | FWRI bear biologists study demographic variables of black bear adults and cubs in Florida, including adult female survival, cub survival, and fecundity (reproductive output) to estimate subpopulation growth or decline. Biologists collect detailed data by tracking female bears and their offspring for several years. Indian River Field Lab: Marine Fisheries Research FWC Research 2024-06-07 | FWRI's Indian River Field Lab is one of the Institute’s 31 field labs located throughout the state. This lab is home to two marine fisheries research programs. The Fisheries-Independent Monitoring (FIM) program, which collects data on hundreds of fish and invertebrate species that inhabit Florida’s riverine, estuarine, and coastal reef habitats. This includes monitoring abundance trends of important fish and invertebrate species over time, defining seasonal and spatial trends, and habitat preference of key species. The Fisheries-Dependent Monitoring (FDM) program, which collects data on more than 200 species of fish and invertebrates harvested from Florida waters. Fishery-dependent data, collected directly from people who harvest aquatic species, is used to monitor harvest rates and assess the health of exploited fish and invertebrate populations.
