The Chipola River is a tributary of the Apalachicola River and home to the only naturally reproducing population of shoal bass known to exist in the state of Florida. Due to being habitat specialists, shoal bass tend to have low population density in rivers where suitable habitat is limited. In 2018, Hurricane Michael depleted more than 90% of the shoal bass population in the Chipola River. As a direct management action following the hurricane, the FWC passed an Executive Order that suspended harvest and possession of shoal bass, that EO was later adopted into rule and remains in place today. FWC freshwater fisheries biologists and managers have successfully released over 11,000 hatchery-raised shoal bass fingerlings into the Chipola River. This effort marks the first time genetically pure shoal bass have been successfully raised in an FWC fish hatchery. The goal of raising and releasing these fish is to enhance the wild population of shoal bass to help maintain the population’s genetic purity and aid in the long-term conservation of this unique species of Florida black bass. As a result, human-crocodile encounters have also increased. To address conflicts with this threatened species, limited management options are available such as educating complainants and translocating crocodiles. Because these options can be labor-intensive and have mixed results, strategies for conflict avoidance are desirable. Successful strategies would result in fewer conflicts and safer conditions for both crocodiles and humans. This study uses satellite/GPS telemetry to learn about the movements and behaviors of crocodiles in urbanized areas. Specifically, we will evaluate how human activities affect crocodile movements, factors involved in road crossings, and habitats that are utilized by crocodiles in urban surroundings. Information gathered from this study can be used by state, federal, and local governments to improve management of crocodiles by incorporating land management designs and practices that would promote the safe and sustainable coexistence of crocodiles and humans in South Florida. The DRM program is the largest, collaborative volunteer-based coral monitoring effort in the world and brings together partners across the jurisdictions of Florida’s Coral Reef. The data generated by the DRM program provides reef managers with an annual assessment of the extent of coral bleaching and disease and its potential impacts on Florida’s coral reefs. Biologists collect detailed data by tracking female bears and their offspring for several years. The resulting estimate of subpopulation growth allows researchers to predict bear abundance in the future, which is used to plan Bear Management needs and actions.
