Throughout the first two episodes of “The Power of Big Oil,” FRONTLINE went inside the fossil fuel industry’s efforts in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s to stall action on climate change by cultivating denial and doubt.

The third and final episode of the series brings the story up to the present.

“Delay,” part three of “The Power of Big Oil,” investigates how, even as the warnings about climate change grew, the U.S. reemerged as one of the world's biggest oil and gas producers, and the fossil fuel industry worked to delay the transition to renewable energy sources — including by promoting natural gas as a cleaner alternative. But as the country was entering a gas boom, a former Exxon Mobil engineer tells FRONTLINE that the industry wasn’t monitoring for methane leaks that could turbo-charge the climate crisis.

As it brings the Big Oil series to a close, “Delay” unpacks the Obama, Trump and Biden administrations’ actions on climate change; explores what may happen next; and examines what’s at stake.

In “A Year of War: Israelis and Palestinians,” Israelis describe what it was like to experience the deadliest day for Jews since World War II as the Oct. 7 attacks unfolded, with around 1,200 people killed and 251 taken hostage. And in Gaza, where more than 40,000 people have reportedly been killed in Israel’s retaliation against Hamas, Palestinians describe — and record — the horrors of large-scale devastation.

Through these individual stories, the documentary offers a profound portrait of the conflict as a whole, and a powerful look inside a cycle of violence and tragedy with no end in sight.
“I thought in another universe we might live together,” says Agam, a young Israeli woman who was taken hostage by Hamas, adding that after what she experienced, she believes “the gap is so deep” and “the opportunity is gone.”

“I could die at any moment and so could my family,” says Ghada, a young Palestinian woman in Gaza whose home was destroyed and who describes being displaced around 15 times by Israeli military operations. “There’s no future at all.”

In November’s historic election, Americans will decide who will lead the nation for the next four years: Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump.

“The Choice 2024” is the latest installment of FRONTLINE’s critically acclaimed election-year special that has been praised as “richly detailed” (The Wall Street Journal) and “completely riveting” (The Washington Post). The two-hour documentary draws on dozens of revealing interviews with those who know Trump and Harris best to present deeply reported narrative arcs of both candidates’ lives, going all the way back to their childhoods.

To trace Harris’ journey from 1960s Berkeley through her rise as a prosecutor and leading up to her time as the first Black, South Asian and female vice president, “The Choice 2024” team spoke to some of Harris’ childhood friends, college classmates, advisors in California and in the White House, and journalists who have covered her career. To chronicle Trump’s path from New York real estate, to entertainment, to politics, the team tapped into a vast collection of interviews from his 2016 campaign days through the present, with everyone from his niece to business and television associates, biographers, and advisors who worked with him in the White House.

The documentary takes viewers inside key moments in each candidate’s life and examines who Harris and Trump are, how they lead, what shaped their characters, and how they arrived at their dueling visions for America’s future.

About 200,000 people around the world were adopted out of South Korea to Western countries over the course of the past seven decades in what is believed to be the largest population of adoptees out of any country. More than half of those adopted ended up in the United States.

But as the documentary, “South Korea’s Adoption Reckoning,” from FRONTLINE and The Associated Press explores, a growing number of adoptees have returned to South Korea as adults only to discover that what they’d been told about their origins was not true.

The film draws on years of reporting, thousands of pages of documents — some of which had never been made public before — and interviews with those who worked in adoption agencies, officials from South Korea and abroad, and more than 80 adoptees who gave powerful firsthand accounts.

“What do you do when you find out your origin story is marked with grievous injustice?” one adoptee asks in the film.

The reporters also spoke to officials from some of the adoption agencies, who have denied systemic wrongdoing. They interviewed a former senior official from an adoption agency who stressed that the overall goal was to find homes for children who would otherwise have grown up in orphanages.

Speaking anonymously, the former adoption worker describes believing in the mission of adoption and wanting to help kids in need: “I saw so many children in these situations where parents cannot raise their kids,” she says. “If they had no choice but to grow up in facilities, isn’t it better for them to have parents?”

But the former adoption worker says in the documentary that she developed “a lot of doubts” about the methods used by the agencies.

“Behind the scenes, we questioned: Is this really all for the children?” the former adoption worker says in this excerpt from “South Korea’s Adoption Reckoning.”

President Biden’s decision to end his bid for reelection less than four months before the 2024 election was the latest dramatic and difficult moment in what has been a lifetime of challenges and controversies, triumphs and tragedies.

In the documentary “Biden’s Decision,” FRONTLINE offers a sweeping look at Biden’s life and legacy and examines his five decades in U.S. politics. From his childhood battle with stuttering and then the death of his wife and young child, through his decades as a U.S. senator, his failed presidential bids, his eight years as vice president in the Obama administration, and then finally taking office as president himself in a time of cascading national crises, Biden was always one to pick himself back up after challenging moments, those who know him told FRONTLINE.

The film explores the fraught days after Biden gave a halting debate performance against former President Donald Trump — a man he was determined to beat a second time in November — and examines why he made the choice to stand down and, in his words, “pass the torch to a new generation.”

In the almost 80 years since the Holocaust ended, Germany has worked to overcome its Nazi history — prominently acknowledging Nazi crimes and memorializing victims, establishing strict laws about antisemitism and hate speech, and becoming a global leader in welcoming refugees.

But over the past decade, Germany has faced a rising wave of far-right violence. “Germany’s Enemy Within” probes extremist attacks and plots, from an attempted massacre of worshippers at a synagogue on Yom Kippur, to a mass shooting targeting Muslims, to the assassination of a pro-refugee politician, to an alleged plot to violently overthrow the German government. The documentary also examines the AfD’s rise, how anti-immigrant rhetoric has found a foothold in Germany, and how, if the AfD were to win power in the German state of Thuringia, it would be the first time a far-right party has controlled a German state since the Nazis.

“Two American Families: 1991-2024” documents the saga of two families, the Stanleys and the Neumanns, who have spent the past 34 years battling to keep from sliding into poverty, and who refuse to give up despite upheaval in the U.S. economy. When the team first began documenting the families’ lives in 1991, the Neumanns and Stanleys were both struggling to adapt to a new, global economy and the trend towards part-time, lower-wage work.

With profound intimacy, the documentary follows the stories of the Stanleys and the Neumanns across six presidential administrations and offers a powerful window into how they and their now-grown children have fared while trying to stay afloat in an economy that has presented challenge after challenge for them.

“There are so many people struggling the same way with the cost of everything and not getting enough on your paycheck to cover your monthly expenses,” said Terry Neumann, who was a mom of young kids when the documentary’s producers began filming with her and is now in her early 60s. “It’s like we haven’t come very far.”

“I won’t give up,” said Jackie Stanley, who is working as a real estate agent while entering her 70s.

As pressure for profits increased on corporations during the global financial downturn of the late 2000s, the U.S. Department of Justice pursued an aggressive crackdown on an international business tactic: bribery. The 2009 documentary “Black Money” examined this shadowy side of international business. The attacks on 9/11 altered America in many ways, from barricades and body frisks in airports to greater government scrutiny of people’s records and electronic surveillance of their communications. The watershed, officials told FRONTLINE in the 2007 documentary “Spying on the Home Front,” was the government’s shift to a strategy of pre-emption at home — not just prosecuting terrorists for breaking the law, but trying to find and stop them before they struck.

The documentary probed the ramifications of that strategy, explored how the National Security Agency’s domestic surveillance program worked at the time, and examined various viewpoints on whether the Bush administration violated the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and infringed on constitutional protections.
