Original Helldivers 1 Theme by Johan Lindgren @jlindgrensweMonkey Island 2 SE Music: 3 - Melodically accurate Beat SyncRogetMusic2022-06-30 | The most complicated implementation of Lucasarts' iMUSE interactive music system ever created! I spent practically half the dev cycle iterating on this area alone.
Funny story: I met Michael Land, original composer of Monkey Island, at the Game Developers Conference in 2007! We had dinner with a bunch of other game audio people, and he recounted the story of how he put together Woodtick, with hundreds of possible transitions based on cue and bar. I thought to myself, "Wow that's cool- but I hope I never have to do anything like that if I wanna write for games!"
...three years later..... 🤣Monkey Island 2 SE Music: 2 - Interactive Music LayeringRogetMusic2022-06-30 | Focusing on one of the more complicated sections of the game (swamp) where we used location-based layering. There were a few sections like this, where layers would be added or swapped in realtime.
Interestingly, we used to have a bar-specific flute stinger play every time you ride the elevator just like the originals, with the same tech as Woodtick (see 3rd vid).... but towards the end of the project this stopped working for some unknown reason, and we never had the engineering bandwidth to fix it :-(Monkey Island 2 SE Music: 1 - Audio OverviewRogetMusic2022-06-30 | Reuploading old vids discussing music to Monkey Island 2 Special Edition!
Apologies for the 2010 phone camera footage :-PKontakt: Dishwasher Pad BreakdownRogetMusic2021-11-09 | A few years back I visited my friend Dave's apartment, which featured the noisiest dishwasher door I've ever heard. I recorded it with my phone and built a pretty useful evocative pad in Kontakt with it :-)
Similar texture to Hildur Guðnadóttir's Chernobyl and Battlefield scores!Score Video: Mortal Kombat 11 Fire God Ascension and Immortal KombatRogetMusic2021-04-05 | Showing paper sketches of my underscore to one of the most epic moments in Mortal Kombat 11, when the heroes finally storm Kronika's Keep. The tracks "Fire God Ascension" and "Immortal Kombat" from the soundtrack album are from this scene in the game.
I present my paper sketch as well as the visuals, with music featured more prominently in the mix so that details can be heard. Annotations have been added to call out character/faction leitmotifs, give credit to live performers, and explain some of the changes I made between paper sketch and production/orchestration.
Have fun! :-)Vader Immortal End Credits OSTRogetMusic2020-05-05 | Ending credits theme to Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series. This is the most recent piece of Star Wars music I've written, for this 2019 VR release. The concept of the player being force-sensitive was introduced at the end of Episode 1, and so this end credits piece is my own take on a new melody for The Force - somber and reluctant, in contrast to the original films' Force theme.
Uploading this as well as the very first piece of Star Wars music I ever wrote officially (Boba Fett boss theme from Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, 2008) in honor of Star Wars Day 2020. It's a little buried in the mix, but this is how we got that "marching percussion" sound when the CoD theme kicks in.
Basically we handed out a buncha wooden dowels to the players, and everyone chose to either slap the string with the dowel, slap with their pencil, or just use their hand on the body of the instrument. I reused this technique in a bunch of different cues throughout the score, as a way to get interesting percussive sounds without using more typical elements like snare drums and such.CoD:WWII Main theme brass 20170625 155319RogetMusic2018-02-08 | Some phone camera footage from my CoD: WWII recording session at Ocean Way Studios in Nashville. "Beyond Libra" is my anime-inspired soundtrack album, 8 years in the making. Live orchestra, three live choirs (incl. a Nigerian vocal ensemble and a Slavic women's chorus), and a host of musicians and vocalists including Raj Ramayya (Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain), Jillian Aversa (Soul Calibur 5, Halo, VideoGamesLive), and many more. Tons of diverse musical genres, including J-pop, orchestral, dulcet small ensembles, afrobeat, and many more!Honoring Our Fallen BrothersRogetMusic2015-09-12 | I composed this funereal cue for an epic sci-fi military action game. I wanted to show the soldiers' human side, giving up their lives to protect their faction. Because this game was multiplayer-only and lacked traditional cutscenes/story, I used the battle preparations frontend as an opportunity to have these kinds of cues that showed the more human side of war.
This piece was recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road StudiosSoaring Above The Clouded CityRogetMusic2015-09-09 | I wrote this cue for a casual medieval fantasy RPG, portraying a bustling town square in a magical floating city. I used choir and brass quintet to illustrate the clouds and majestic architecture, with fast paced guitar riffs, flute solo and hurdy-gurdy representing the busy city crowds.Lara Croft Overture, LIVE Performance (Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris OST)RogetMusic2015-09-08 | Here's me, performing a live piano arrangement of the title track "Lara Croft Overture" from my soundtrack to Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris! I wrote the original soundtrack as a loveletter to 80s and 90s action-adventure movie scores, and so the title theme follows that melodic adventure paradigm. You can get the full Lara Croft soundtrack at soundcloud.com/crystaldynamics/sets/lctooThe Ruins of Taris (Star Wars The Old Republic OST)RogetMusic2015-09-06 | I wrote this somber ambient cue for the planet of Taris, a ruined ecumenopolis. For each planet I scored, I wanted at least one piece to have an emotional and reflective tone, distinct from the suspenseful painting that most ambient cues in The Old Republic use.The Bounty HunterRogetMusic2015-09-03 | I wrote this hybrid electro-orchestral cue for a short sci-fi action thriller. It makes extensive use of hard-hitting synthesized percussion and leads, as well as brassy orchestration and a Spanish-influenced acoustic guitar solo.Fields of WoodhurstRogetMusic2015-09-02 | I wrote this ambient cue for a peaceful farming village in a casual medieval fantasy RPG. It uses Celtic harps and woodwind solos to give a rustic feel, juxtaposed with an emotional warm strings bridge section. The False Emperor (Star Wars The Old Republic OST)RogetMusic2015-08-29 | I wrote this intense choir and orchestra theme for Star Wars: The Old Republic, as an alternate main theme - it was ultimately used as the boss theme for Darth Malgus, one of the principal villains in the game. I used a very classic-cinema approach to the orchestration and melody, to evoke the Franz Waxman and Erich Korngold sound that John Williams was inspired by on the original Star Wars films. The choir as well sings in Sanskrit, a language used by Williams in the choral themes from The Phantom Menace.
This piece was performed by the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra at Skywalker Sound.Suite from Mansion of Crossed DestiniesRogetMusic2015-08-28 | This piece is a suite of interactively-stitched ingame cues I wrote for the puzzle game "Mansion of Crossed Destinies". I explored colorful, woodwind-heavy chamber orchestration with jagged harmonic progressions to underscore the whimsical art style. Each segment can modulate to different keys or tempos, but always ends similarly and can be stitched to any other segment. The game then randomly chooses each segment based on intensity level, using tempo synchronization to achieve seamless transitions.Forgotten LabyrinthRogetMusic2015-08-27 | This cue is from a casual medieval-fantasy RPG, and is played in the dungeon areas. Because there were several different types of dungeons that could be replayed many times, I wrote a lengthy loop with several unique-sounding sections within, all with different moods. Different dungeons can start at a different point in the track (based on their mood/feel), but the piece always develops and loops fully to prevent ear-fatigue. This piece also pays homage to some of my favorite JRPG soundtracks in its use of woodwind solos and subtle electronics while still portraying a fantasy mood.Rescue MissionRogetMusic2015-08-26 | This piece is an intense action cue from an epic sci-fi action game. It's used in a timed extraction sequence, and so while the first half uses high speed action music, it ends with a lengthy gradual tension swell as players defend their dropships' takeoff.
(Recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios)Payback, Flashback (Dead Mans Hour OST)RogetMusic2015-08-25 | This dramatic piece is from Dead Man's Hour, a short crime/noir film about a former criminal's final chance for retribution. The protagonist has a standoff with his original killer, shooting him and then going into a flashback of his last moment with his duplicitous girlfriend. I used lots of bending pitches throughout the score to depict the protagonist's moral decay, and lots of "dirty" sounds like guitar tremolos and string effects for a gritty atmosphere.Oppressed VillageRogetMusic2015-08-24 | This piece is a dark town theme I wrote for a casual fantasy RPG. Brooding minor chords and low toms juxtapose against colorful orchestration, to portray this once-peaceful village now being under enemy rule and martial law.Interstellar DogfightRogetMusic2015-08-23 | This rousing action cue is meant for an epic space battle in a sci-fi action game. It uses rushing orchestrations and a bold melody, along with ethnic percussion and heavily syncopated background elements to increase tension.
(Recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road)BetrayalRogetMusic2015-08-22 | This cinematic track was writtten for a crime-themed shooter game, during a cutscene where the protagonist is shot in the back by his best friend. It's a very simple cue with only electric guitar and bass, with a focus on the grit and shock of the moment.Billys Theme (Dead Mans Hour OST)RogetMusic2015-08-21 | This cue is the intro theme to the film Dead Man's Hour (dir. Nathan Kitada), about a recently-murdered man reanimating for one final day of retribution. I wanted a feeling of gritty sadness to his theme, so I used solo electric guitar (performed by Brian Auld) with a very plain, simple melody. Background elements such as scraped metals and whistle-tone flutes swirl about to portray an otherworldly haze for this introductory sequence in the morgue.Capital City SommervaleRogetMusic2015-08-20 | This piece is from a fantasy RPG, and depicts a bustling medieval town. I used several traditional Celtic instruments (frame drums and celtic harp) as well as other European folk instruments (hurdy gurdy and gadulka) to give a metropolitan feel while still remaining true to the medieval setting.Battle of the WizardsRogetMusic2015-08-19 | Here's a rousing battle cue I wrote for a casual fantasy RPG. I used choir, running winds and strings, and other coloristic orchestrations to depict these magic-intense battles, while keeping the bold melodic brass backbone needed for a fantasy medieval score.Bloody FootprintsRogetMusic2015-08-18 | Here's a stealth cue I wrote for a crime-themed action game. I kept the instrumentation simple so as to retain the grit of the visuals, but used sporadic drum fills (played by Chuck Simpson) to keep the mood tense. The Nightmare (Buried OST)RogetMusic2015-08-18 | This cue is from the animated short film "Buried", and is played during a sequence where the protagonist is in a nightmare of giant snowflakes giving chase. I used a bouncy triple-meter rhythm for the chase music as a reference to Dukas' classic "The Sorcerer's Apprentice", portraying enchanted inanimate objects going out of control.Elysias ThemeRogetMusic2015-08-16 | This piece is a character theme I wrote for a casual fantasy RPG. It features the lovely Laura Intravia's solo vocals, with a somber plaintive melody and fantasy orchestrations. I used some subtle electronics in the bridge, doubled with quiet woodwind staccatos to create a sparkling background that illustrates the concept of magic. The Northern BladesRogetMusic2015-08-15 | Here's a heroic battle theme I wrote for a casual fantasy RPG. In addition to typical orchestration and melodic elements associated with medieval fantasy scores, I also tried some unusual harmonic progressions and syncopations in the second half of the cue, in order to portray the element of magic.Jacobs BalloonRogetMusic2015-08-14 | Here's a bouncy theme I wrote for a small jazz ensemble (trumpet, vibes, electric guitar, upright bass and drums, and live flute played by yours truly). I went for a floaty French jazz aesthetic, with some Brazilian bossa influences in the harmonic progression.Reasons to Die (Dead Mans Hour OST)RogetMusic2015-08-13 | This morose guitar and cello duet serves as the ending credits theme to Dead Man's Hour, a short crime/noir film about a former criminal's final chance for retribution. Featuring Brian Auld on guitar and Alex Atanasiu on celloThe Emerald Planet (Veiled Alliances OST)RogetMusic2015-08-12 | This orchestral cue is played as an introduction to the gorgeous city-planet. I used soaring orchestrations and brass fanfare to portray the grand vista, with some Star Wars stylistic references in the use of brass harmony.Streets of RomeRogetMusic2015-08-11 | This piece describes a stroll through the city of Rome. I used lots of plucked strings and frame drums to give an ancient Mediterranean feel, while also using subtle electronics and larger percussion sounds to keep my portrayal of ancient Rome fresh and unique.Race Against the Rock (Gemology OST)RogetMusic2015-08-09 | Here's an action track from the Gemology (WiiU) OST. The developer listed a few Star Fox pieces as reference, so I attempted a Nintendo-style orchestral sound - emulating the orchestration, performance style, and recording hall of the recent Nintendo titles that use live orchestra.
