Kreutzer 1 Dynamics with Unilateral & Bilateral Motion | Play With a More Resonant Sound Violinna 2024-03-02 | Unilateral motion is when the body transfers weight toward the same direction as the bow. It helps to extend the legato stroke and encourages the upper arm to lead in very slow bows. Bilateral motion is when the bow moves in the opposite direction of the body’s weight transfer. It’s helpful for most other types of bow strokes. Even in fast 16th note passages, the body responds on a more “microscopic” level in bilateral motion when it’s free of excess tension. Bilateral motion gives the sound more resonance, power, and freedom. In this video, I use the first 2 Kreutzer etudes as examples to demonstrate this concept. How To Catch the String with Arm Weight, NOT Force | Martele and Colle | Paul Rolland Bow Rocking Violinna 2024-02-02 | One common pitfall of learning "catch and release" for a good martele, colle, and other related bowstrokes is pushing too hard with the index finger or overpronating the arm. This can lead to a lot of tension. A better way is to feel the natural weight of the arm into the bow, and the bow's natural weight making contact with the string. A great tool to feel the natural arm weight more easily is by practicing the bow rocking exercise as taught by Paul Rolland in his pedagogy approach. In this video, I demonstrate how bow rocking exercise can be incorporated in scales and etudes to practice martele and colle bow strokes. It's common for many players to undergo a change of setup multiple times in life. We need to adapt the instrument to fit the body more ideally that will allow more freedom in playing and prevent injuries. 2 VIBRATO Exercises | Simon Fischer | Understanding Active vs Passive Motions in Vibrato Violinna 2023-03-31 | One of the most challenging things about having a good vibrato is keeping the finger joint closest to the nail from tightening up. If it gets tight, the vibrato might be seen but not heard. To get that joint loose, we need to understand that no matter what type of vibrato you do (ie – wrist, hand, arm), vibrato consists of active and passive motions. This means we cannot have too much finger pressure. At the same time, we sometimes have to hold our instruments in a less-than-ideal way in orchestras to be able to see the music and conductor reliably, while making sure our stand partner and other surrounding musicians have enough room to play. Some technique (such as bow angle, instrument position, and intonation) is also affected in orchestra sessions. Thirds on Violin with Minimal Shifting | Inspired by Adam Han-Gorski Violinna 2023-01-30 | This video is my response (in inspiration) to an interview I saw on Tonebase.co with violinist (concertmaster, soloist) Adam Han-Gorski. Try this fingering for 3rds that keep the hand almost entirely in the same part of the fingerboard while taking advantage of open strings, harmonics, and half steps to create seamless transitions between pairs of notes! Sometimes it's helpful to do a non-standard fingering to make a passage get a boost of clarity, lightness, and even speed. I also tried this method on a more difficult scale that doesn't use open strings to make best use of half steps and extensions while playing 3rds.Another way to play 3rds with minimal shifting is in Dounis Op. 27.
