In this film I uncover the TRUE story of the Trap Dike, which includes first ascents, modern rescues, hurricane Irene, geology, and the real reason this route is considered "one of the most dangerous climbs in the east."

Why Does Nobody Climb This Route on Mount Washington?

Derek Fobare 2026-08-27 | While exploring the White Mountains on Google Earth, I stumbled across an obvious landslide on Mount Washington. But oddly, while researching the route I found almost nothing.
Until eventually, I stumbled across one post on a climbing forum that described the route as "Not recommend".
Naturally I had to find out why, so I set off to Mount Washington to investigate.
What I found was a class 4 scramble tucked away in this elusive gully.

Crossing Katahdins Knife Edge | The Most Exposed Hike in the East

A Winter Ascent of Algonquin Peak in the Adirondacks

Derek Fobare 2026-01-05 | The Arctic-alpine zone is one of the most extreme environments on Earth.
Found only on the world’s tallest and most prominent peaks, it is shaped by persistent wind and severe cold—conditions that prevent nearly all plant life from growing. What remains is a fully exposed, largely barren landscape that closely resembles terrain found in polar regions.
In winter, survival here depends entirely on judgment.

This film chronicles my journey to Algonquin Peak in the Adirondack Park of New York. It's one of the states largest, and best examples of this rare mountain ecosystem.
Algonquin stands at 5114' and is the Adirondack's second tallest mountain.

Hiking through a Snowstorm on Mount Jackson

Derek Fobare 2025-12-11 | A snowstorm was bearing down on the White Mountains and instead of staying home I decided to go out and hike Mount Jackson. I encountered heavy snowfall and winds as the day endured.

This hike follows the Webster Jackson trail from Crawford Notch. The round trip total is roughly 5.5 miles with 2200' of elevation gain. While not the most challenging hike, it is perfect for lousy weather days.

I Found A Wrecked B-47 Bomber at the Summit of Wright Peak

Derek Fobare 2025-12-03 | In this video I climb to the summit of Wright Peak in the Adirondack Mountains, to find the wreck of a B-47 Bomber that crashed here in 1962. The Cold War aircraft struck the mountain at over 500mph, leaving bits of metal strewn across its summit. Today parts of the wreck are still visible on the mountain, buried in snow and hidden in-between rocks.

Guys Slide | A Risky Off Trial Ascent of Mount Lincoln in the White Mountains

Derek Fobare 2025-09-25 | Mount Lincoln is a 5,089 foot peak in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. In this video I go off trail to find the elusive Guys Slide, ascending its steep slabs and loose rock, over big exposure.

Mount Lincoln in the White Mountain National Forest is part of the famed and very popular Franconia Ridge! The top offers incredible 360° views of the Pemigewasset Wilderness and Franconia Notch. It is also a New Hampshire 4000 footer!

This ascent route is not a trial, and demands the upmost respect from prospective climbers. It requires backcountry navigation through pure wilderness, bushwhacking experience, rock climbing skills, and extensive route finding on the slabs.

The climb itself ascends ~1200 feet at an average angle of 35°, with the maximum reaching an astounding 50-55°. The rock is a mix of 3rd, and 4th class scrambling up an extremely exposed slab. There is one 5.4 crux in the center slab if one takes the path of most resistance.

This is named after the legendary Guy Waterman, an explorer, mountaineer, and author. More info here:

Tripyramids North Slide | The Most INSANE Trail in the White Mountains

Derek Fobare 2025-09-15 | North Tripyramid is a 4180' peak in the White Mountains National Forest of New Hampshire, its home to one of the steepest and most intense trails in the Northeast. I also hike Middle Tripyramid 4140' in this video. Both of these peaks are on the New Hampshire 4000 footers list.

The North Slide climbs an astounding 1200 vertical feet in just 0.5 miles. Some slabs on the slide reach upwards of 40°. This trail has relentless slab climbing, big rock scrambles, and loose stone over TONS of exposure. In my humble opinion this trail takes the crown for wildest trail in the White Mountains. This hike has impressive views for the slide, that just keep getting better as you climb upwards.

Along with the North Slide I also descent the South Slide on South Tripyramid. The south slide, while not as steep is just as interesting.

The North Slide and South Slide are both on the New Hampshire TERRIFYING 25 list, ranking at or near the top in terms of most intense trails.

Hiking Saddleback & The Horn | An Epic Alpine Ridge in Maine

This hike starts at a ski area and quickly transforms into an AMAZING ridge with incredible 360° views from both the peaks and the ridge itself for over 4 miles.

Saddleback Mountain and The Horn is a roughly 8 mile hike with 2750' of elevation gain. You spend about 4 miles above treeline in the alpine zone so check the weather before heading out there.

Whitewall | A Risky Slide Up A Trailless Peak Deep in the White Mountains

Derek Fobare 2025-09-03 | Whitewall Mountain is a 3405' peak in the White Mountain National Forest.

This peak is not your standard hike, as it's not a hike at all. Whitewall is a trailless peak, with no defined path to its summit. It requires off trail navigation through dense forest, and rock route finding on a VERY LOOSE rock slide.

The Whitewall slide is a sustained 40 degree angle, which makes it the steepest average angle slide in New England. Its rocks are loose, even the very large ones, test all rocks before transferring weight.

This is an epic off trail adventure deep in the White Mountains!

Hiking Mount Chocorua & Champney Falls | White Mountains - New Hampshire

It is also locally know as the most photographed mountain in the world! In this video I share what it’s like to hike this peak (mostly what the views and trail looks like).

Hiking Mount Chocorua can be done many different ways, as there are several trails to its summit. In my opinion the best trail to the summit is the Champney brook trial, as it passes 2 nice waterfalls! The Champney brook trail is also the easiest way to the summit of Chocorua.
IMPORTANT: The Champney brook trailhead has a $5 cash only parking fee

Optionally also hit the summit of Middle Sister to have a nice ridge hike to the summit of Chocorua.

This hike was 8.8 miles with a total of 2600’ of elevation gain, it’s one of the most popular hikes in the white mountains so plan accordingly.

Climbing the Cascade Slide | Adirondack Slide Climbing

Derek Fobare 2025-08-22 | Cascade Mountain standing at 4098' is the Adirondacks most popular hike, seeing thousands upon thousands of hikers each year. However very few take the off trail ascent up the Cascade Slide.

The Cascade Slide is a 1.9 mile bushwhack up an old landslide. Mostly encompassing class 3 climbing, there are some areas which push into class 4 territory, especially the headwall at the top of the slide which many say is approaching low 5th class friction climbing.

Disclaimer:
Although relatively easy in comparison to most Adirondack rock slides, the Cascade Slide still encompasses huge risk. THIS IS AN INHERENTLY DANGEROUS ACTIVITY Slide Climbing is NOT hiking, and should only be attempted by those with the necessary skill.

Hiking North Twin, South Twin, & Galehead - 3 Peaks in One Day | White Mountains, New Hampshire

Derek Fobare 2025-08-11 | North Twin is a 4760' peak, South Twin is a 4901' peak and Galehead is a 4024' peak all situated in the Twin Range of the White Mountain National Forest. All of these peaks are on the NH 48 high peaks list.

This hike offers outstanding 360 degree views along the twin ridge, with South Twin having one of the best views in the White Mountains. Galehead however is a wooded summit, and offers no view from its summit.

The total distance out and back from the north twin trailhead was 14 miles with 5100' of elevation gain. This route also utilizes one of the steepest trails in the white mountains - twinway; which gains 1200' of vertical in just 0.8 miles.

Overall this is a fantastic hike!

Scrambling in the Alpine Zone | The Terrifying Caps Ridge Trail to Mt Jefferson - White Mountains NH

Derek Fobare 2025-07-30 | Mount Jefferson standing at 5712' is New Hampshire's third tallest mountain. The quickest, steepest, and most "terrifying" way to access its summit is via The Caps Ridge Trail.

The Caps Ridge Trail is 5 miles round trip with a staggering 2600' of elevation gain in a very short 2.5 miles. At its steepest it is class 2+ rock scrambling (with a very short section of what feels like class 3).

This hike is on the Terrifying 25 list in New Hampshire.

Mount Moosilauke & South Peak Loop | White Mountains - New Hampshire

Derek Fobare 2025-07-20 | Mount Moosilauke is a 4802' peak in New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest. It's the western most high peak.

Moosilauke has incredible 360 degree views. The hike itself is just 9 mies with 2600' of elevation gain. This makes this mountain one of the easiest 4000 footers in New Hampshire.

South Peak is not an official 4000 footer, but is still a worthwhile addition as it also has outstanding views from its summit.

The Arrow | A Risky Slide Up Mt. Hancock in the White Mountains

Derek Fobare 2025-07-14 | The Arrow Slide on Mount Hancock is a striking 1000 foot climb consisting of class 3/4 scrambling on slabs and rock talus. This is a remote and off trial route up Hancock.

The Arrow Slide itself is mostly class 3 climbing, with some optional class 4 slab scrambles. It's steep, gaining about 1000 vertical feet in just 0.5 miles. The slide proper gains about 600 feet in just 0.2 miles, averaging a 35° slope, with the steepest sections reaching 45-50° on the slabs. There is some loose rock, however the slabs offer superb and sound bedrock for scrambling.

This climb summits Mount Hancock which is a NH 4000 footer standing at 4420'. Optionally it also summits another 4000 footer; South Hancock at 4319'.

This climb offers outstanding views the whole way up.

DO NOT ATTEMPT if it has been wet, there is rain in the forecast, you are unfamiliar with off trial nature, or unfamiliar with slab/ slide climbing.

Mount Washington Via Huntington Ravine | The Most DANGEROUS Trail In New Hampshire

Derek Fobare 2025-07-07 | Mount Washington is the tallest mountain in the North East United States, standing at 6288’. The Huntington ravine trail is the most difficult way to summit, and widely regarded as the most difficult, and dangerous trail in all of the North East. This is also the hardest Trail on the New Hampshire terrifying 25 list.

The Huntington Ravine Trail is EXTREME, steep, and exposed. Most of the climbing is class 3, with some easy class 4 moves, any fall on this terrain can be disastrous. Do not attempt this trail in bad weather, wet conditions, and DO NOT DESCEND THIS TRAIL.

The trail itself gains ~4400’ in 4 miles. It starts in Pinkham Notch on the Tuckerman’s Ravine Trail, Turns into the Huntington Ravine Trail, and then follows the Nelson Crag Trail to the summit of Mount Washington. There are many ways to descend including via Lions Head Trail, Tuckerman’s Ravine Trail, and the way I recommend; Over to boot Spur and then down back to Pinkham Notch.

Overall this trail is an epic adventure up the most challenging trail and tallest peak in the North East, I highly recommend this if you have the skills to do so.

Climbing King Ravine to Mount Adams & Mount Madison | White Mountains- New Hampshire

Derek Fobare 2025-06-28 | Mount Adams at 5774’ is New Hampshires second tallest peak, while Mount Madison at 5376’ is New Hampshires fifth tallest peak. The King Ravine trail is the toughest way to “hike” these peaks.

Hiking is in quotations as the King Ravine trail is not your average hiking trail. In just a short 0.5 miles is ascends roughly 1400’ of vertical, which is insanely steep. This trail has a few 3rd class scrambling sections, where using hands for balance and climbing is necessary, and also where a fall would be disastrous.

Please only attempt this trail if you are in top physical condition, and are comfortable with exposure. Make sure to also check the higher summits forecast as although not extremely tall, theses mountains have some of the worst weather in America. Higher summits forecast:

Hiking Whiteface Mountain and Esther Mountain- Adirondacks - New York

Derek Fobare 2025-06-15 | Whiteface Mountain is a 4867’ peak while Esther Mountain sits a little shorter at 4240’. Both peaks are part of the Adirondack 46er’s list.

The Whiteface Mountain and Esther Mountain hike is one of the best hikes the Adirondack Mountains has to offer. There are outstanding 360° views from the summit of whiteface, in which you can see almost all of the Adirondack High Peaks. The ridge section also offers epic sustained views.

The hike itself is ~10 miles round trip with 3600’ of elevation gain, if you start at the Atmospheric Science Research Center parking lot.

In the summertime there is a road to the summit, so don’t expect to be alone up there, and it can get quite busy on the weekends.

Hiking Mount Garfield Via the Garfield Trail - White Mountains, New Hampshire

Derek Fobare 2025-06-14 | Mount Garfield is a 4501’ peak in the White Mountain National Forest of New Hampshire. This mountain has one of the BEST views in the entire forest, offering a 360° view which includes the entire Pemigewasset Wilderness, and beyond.

This hike is about 10 miles long in the summer, and follows a gradual trail all the way to the summit, it gains roughly 3000’ of vertical along the way.

Hiking to a Plane Crash on the top of a Mountain - Mount Success, New Hampshire

Derek Fobare 2025-06-09 | Mount Success is a 3565’ Mountain in the White Mountain National Forest of New Hampshire. Although not the tallest peak, it offers impressive 360° views from the summit of New Hampshire’s tallest mountains, and far into Maine.

The biggest draw to this mountain is not the view, but rather the remains of a plane crash near the top which happened in 1954.

Hiking Glen Ellis Falls - White Mountains, New Hampshire

Derek Fobare 2025-06-07 | Glen Ellis falls is a 64’ tall waterfall in the White Mountain National Forest of New Hampshire. Although not the tallest in the state, this waterfall sure does pack a punch, and is a worthy destination as itself.

The hike is 0.6 miles round trip, along an extremely well maintained, level trail. The only challenging part is the many many stairs down to the falls. There are good views along the path as well.

I highly recommend this hike!

This took me about 30 minutes to explore.

Skiing The East Coast in June | The Snowfields - Mount Washington, NH

The insane amount of snow and wind buries the eastern side of the mountain in feet of snow, sometimes allowing for skiing all the way through June. This is the last remaining snow on the East Coast, and this is what it’s like to ride it.

Hiking Mount Eisenhower Via. Edmands Path

Derek Fobare 2025-05-30 | Mt. Eisenhower is a 4757’ peak in the southern Presidential Range, which is located in the White Mountain National Forest of New Hampshire. This peak has a distinctive dome shape when viewed from afar.

The approach is a 6.6 mile out and back trail with 2700’ of elevation gain. While generally easy going, there are a few sections of trail that can be steep and rocky.

The views as you begin to break tree-line are impressive, with a stunning 360° view at the summit. On a clear day there are incredible views of the presidential range, and most high peaks in New Hampshire. The alpine zone offers wide open views, since there are no trees there to obscure views.

Overall this hike is one of the easiest 4000’ footers in New Hampshire, HOWEVER DO NOT ATTEMPT IN BAD WEATHER!! The alpine zone is extremely exposed.

Hiking North Kinsman, South Kinsman, and Lonesome Lake Via the Fishin Jimmy Trail

Derek Fobare 2025-05-16 | North Kinsman is a 4293’ peak and South Kinsman is a 4358’ peak in Franconia Notch in the White Mountains National Forest of New Hampshire. These peaks are some of the westernmost NH 48 peaks.

The approach Via. The Lonesome lake, Fishin Jimmy (AT), and Kinsman Ridge Trail is a 10 mile out and back trail with roughly 2300’ of elevation gain. The trail has some open rock sections that can get slippery when wet, which is often.

The views from ledges and summits along the ridge are impressive, with the best view on South Kinsman’s false summit. On a clear day you can see many of New Hampshire’s tallest peaks.

This took me roughly 6 hours to complete

Skiing Airplane Gully, in the Great Gulf Wilderness. Mt. Washington, NH.

Derek Fobare 2025-05-03 | Airplane gully is one of the longest backcountry ski runs on Mt. Washington NH. Its vertical drop is around ~1200 feet, with pitches ranging from 30°-50°.
The steepest pitch is near the headwall, between 45°-50° followed by a 40° sustained pitch through the gully. The lower half of the line is around 30° which makes for fantastic lower angle skiing.

The views along this line are some of the best in the entire range, with commanding views of Mt. Adam’s, Mt. Madison, and a partial view of Mt. Jefferson. It’s important to note that no civilization can be seen while skiing airplane gully! (This is a huge plus for me).

As always, if attempting to ski this line yourself, please be prepared with crampons and proper backcountry techniques at the minimum. I like to bring ice axes as well for added safety.

Skiing Chute and The Snowfields - Tuckerman’s Ravine, Mount Washington

Derek Fobare 2025-04-27 | Skiing the Chute in Tuckermans Ravine, and the Snowfields on Mount Washington, in New Hampshire. This makes for a great tour for beginners and experts alike!

The Chute is a roughly ~900 foot ski descent in Tuckermans Ravine on Mt. Washington. With an average angle of 40°, with a maximum angle of 55° near the headwall it is one of the steepest runs in Tuckermans ravine.

The snowfields is a roughly ~1000ft ski descent of lower angle, around 30° that starts near the auto road of Mt. Washington around 6100’ It’s a lovely run with superb views.

Crampons and mountaineering equipment, along with proper backcountry terrain knowledge is highly recommended before taking on these routes.

Hiking Mount Tecumseh Via. Mount Tecumseh Trail.

Derek Fobare 2025-03-23 | Mount Tecumseh (3995’ elevation) is the shortest of the New Hampshire 4000 footers. It is also one of the easiest 4000 footer hikes.

Clocking in at 5 miles with 2200 feet of elevation gain, the Mount Tecumseh trail from Waterville valley is a moderate (at some points steep and other points flat) trail. This is a great introduction hike to the New Hampshire 4000 footers.

New surveying data reduced Mount Tecumseh’s height from the original 4003’ down to 3995’. Although below the 4000 footer mark, the AMC still recognizes Mount Tecumseh as an official 4000 footer in NH, and it is still part of the 48 4000 footers.

Skiing Left Gully - Tuckerman’s Ravine, Mount Washington

Derek Fobare 2025-03-23 | Left Gully is a roughly ~1000 foot ski descent in Tuckerman’s Ravine on Mt. Washington. At an average angle of 40° with a max angle of ~50° near the headwall, this is a steep ski, yet one of the easiest in the ravine.

Access to the base of left gully starts at the Pinkham Notch visitor center. You ascend the Tuckerman’s Ravine Trail for ~2.5 miles with ~2400 feet of vertical gain to the base of the ravine. The ascent of left gully is ~0.3 miles with ~1000 feet of vertical gain. Crampons are highly recommended.
