Conveying a sense of dark grandeur, much of the piece is dissonant and atonal, reflecting Maltor's inner turmoil and tumultuous, bloody past. The theme is also decidedly hyper-masculine: stark, deep and bombastic brass, woodwinds and percussion dominate, eschewing any hint of strings. A driving rhythm is introduced at 0:35 (yes, the nod to John Williams' legendary "Jaws" theme is intentional), echoing the protagonist's unflinching determination to see his tasks through. He does possess vulnerable emotions deep inside, but he suppresses them with brooding stoicism, ultimately purged in discordant brass and percussive crashes. Finally, Maltor's noble and heroic side emerges in the only tonal section at 1:40:00, a triumphant fanfare motif. There is a subdued crescendo with a hint of anguish at 2:08, culminating with sinewy brass and authoritative pounding of the kettle drum.

The rest of the party flees in fear, but Drake, eager to prove his worth, charges the Black Knight, and the two lock swords. Drake is immediately outclassed, but the dark warrior refrains from a killing blow. Instead, he offers a hand, helping his defeated opponent back up to his feet. Just then, a band of Zevus' soldiers appear out of nowhere and attack the two. Before Drake is even able to retrieve his sword, the Black Knight, single-handedly, makes quick work of the assailants. Having his life saved engenders a sense of trust in Drake, and the two begin to engage in verbal discourse. The dark warrior introduces himself as Maltor Hultar, confirming that most of the claims about his murderous acts are regretfully true. He asserts, however, that he has long-since reformed, and only seeks to live in peace, alone. He is aware of the escalating situation with Zevus, but desires no part of it. Recognizing what an asset Maltor would make in the resistance against Zevus, Drake proposes that by joining Thall's cause, Maltor could atone for his dark past. While reluctant, after tense contemplation, Maltor agrees to join Drake. "If I may recompense but a single life I took, then it be a worthy cause," Maltor concludes.
