In this quick video, we’ll show you how to check the head float on your Polaris 280 pool cleaner. If your pool cleaner is laying on its side when running, then there’s an easy way to check this.

Like most of our mechanical devices, your pool cleaner will require periodic adjustments, routine maintenance, and the replacement of certain parts. For anyone that has one of these cleaners you probably already know what a workhorse it is.

We run ours twice a day and it does an excellent job of keeping much of the debris picked up. Depending on the size of your pool and surrounding conditions, you should adjust your pool cleaner accordingly.

One thing that I strongly recommend is to keep a small bin or container of minor spare parts on hand. The cost won’t be too excessive and when a minor part breaks or needs replacing on your pool cleaner, you’ll be ready to replace it, and will be able to keep your pool crystal clean and ready to use.

Some replacement parts are expensive so it might be challenging to keep them on hand but most of the components can be purchased online and you’ll be able to get them pretty fast. To check if the head float needs replacing simply remove it from the feed pipe and shake it to see if there’s any water inside. Over time the head float can get a tiny hole in it causing it to take on water. When this happens it’s no longer able to run in the upright position and needs to be replaced.

To adjust the sweep hose movement, look for the screw or set screw on the side of the feed pipe on the back of the Polaris where the sweep hose connects. To decrease the motion of the tail, simply turn the screw clockwise. To increase the motion, turn the screw counterclockwise. You may need to make several adjustments to obtain the optimal desired movement.

In this quick video, we’ll show you how to use SikaQuick Patch for concrete to make a simple fast repair. If you have holes or spalls in your concrete driveway, sidewalk, patio, or any concrete foundation, this is a fast and easy way to make a repair. It mixes right in the bag and no water is required.

In this video, we’re showing you how to make a repair without any tools. A concrete trowel or putty knife would be ideal, but it’s not really required to complete a repair with this stuff. It’s ready in about 1 hour and sets completely after 24 hours.

The idea is to seal up any spots like this in your concrete, especially outside and if you live anywhere that it freezes. A spot like this can get water in them and then when it freezes, it can cause the hole or spall to increase in size and cause major issues. Not to mention that it looks terrible when you have a crack or a spot like this.

Because of the ease of use, we’ll definitely be getting some more of this product.

How to Destroy Documents

In this quick video, we’ll show you how to destroy sensitive documents without a shredder. We have a crosscut paper shredder but I’m always looking for alternative ways to do things.

Our crosscut shredder is noisy and takes a lot of time, especially when shredding full-sized documents. Most of the time it can only handle about 3-5 pages at a time.

We’ve also tried burning documents which can take time and depending on surrounding conditions, can be risky. Also with the recent drought experienced in some areas, not really a good idea to have a document fire.

As an alternative, try pulping the documents.

Place documents in large bucket or trash can and fill with water and let soak for a day or more if possible. Then take a paint mixer, drywall mud mixer or garden auger and attach to drill and mix until destroyed.

Let the pulp mix dry and recycle or compost.

Tuff Shed

In this video, we’ll show you the preparation and installation of our new Tuff Shed.

We had a much smaller shed that was pretty run down and were considering trying to bring it back but once we dug in, we realized that it had major water and termite damage, so it was time for demo.

We have another small shed that we use primarily for lawn equipment, yard tools etc., but we also wanted something where we could have a work area for other projects.

We considered several options and ended up looking at our local Home Depot at the Tuff Shed display they have. After deciding on our favorite and a size that we thought would suit our needs and budget, we started the process.

We started working with Home Depot but ended up working directly with Tuff Shed. They had a representative come out to our home and inspect the site where we wanted to place the new shed.

From the time we agreed on our favorite design and placed the order, it was only going to be a couple weeks, so that gave us time to ready the site.

The site we picked was already pretty level, but we decided for added drainage and appearance to add decomposed granite. Our site did need a bit of leveling on one side and we allowed a 36” border on three sides so we order 3 yards of decomposed granite. On the front side where the door will be is a concrete driveway.

After getting the decomposed granite spread, level, and compacted the site was pretty much ready and we only had a few small tree limbs to trim as we didn’t want them interfering with the roof of the new shed.

We had our tentative install date and the morning of the installation, the team phoned to say they were on their way. Five hours after they arrived, the installation was completed.

The entire building comes partially assembled and the majority of the components already had primer. As one worker started on the base the other started unloading and staged the walls and other large components. Once unloaded he started painting everything with the color we selected.

After final assembly, all nail holes were filled, and another coat of paint was applied.

All in all, we are very happy with our selection and the service that we received.

DE Filter Grids Replacement Tip

In this video, we’ll show you how to replace the DE filter grids in a Pentair Pool Filter.

Should you not be comfortable working on your pool equipment, please contact a professional but please know that it’s fairly easy to work on once you know-how.

This filter operates under high pressure when on so be sure that your pump is in the full off position with the power turned off during maintenance. When working on the unit be sure to use caution at startup as air can be trapped in the system. If not correctly installed, the lid can be blown off possibly causing injury.

So, in this case, the filter uses DE or Diatomaceous earth as the substance that filters the water. The filter cloth on the grids merely supports the DE. You should not operate your filter in excess of 3 minutes without the use of DE.

We’ll not get into showing how to backwash or the introduction of DE after servicing during this video but will have those videos on our channel soon for you to check out. We’ve also got another video on our channel already about changing out the filter grids, but we think this new process may be much easier and we wanted to share it with everyone.

So please remember, this video is strictly about replacing the filter grids.

Typically, you would want to perform a backwash cycle before getting ready to clean or replace the grids but for this video, we did not perform this step.

We had several other things going on with the pool and wanted to see exactly what the grids looked like immediately after opening the filter case.

Much to our surprise, the grids were a deep blue color. Normally if opened without backwashing the DE material would appear as an off-white dirty color.

Before having issues, the filter had been recently backwashed, and the water had tested the previous week as okay.

We had several things going on in our backyard including the replacement of our concreate patio which involved demo and removal of old concrete and pouring of new concrete. For a period of about 5 days, the pool equipment was turned off.

While we’re still not sure what caused the blue color, several people on a Facebook group on Pool Care that I’m a member of speculated that it might be the chemicals we were using. However, it was the exact same chemicals we’ve always used.

Following shutting the power off to your unit, you need to relieve air pressure from the system.

To accomplish this your filter should have an air relief valve on it as this one does on the top of the case. Open this to relieve the air pressure inside the system and leave it open. It’s a good idea to leave the valve in the open position and wait just a bit to allow the pressure within the system to bleed off.

Next, you will want to loosen the main clamp on the filter tank. Do this slowly by loosening the nut slowly at first. Don’t remove it all the way at first.

It may be necessary to wiggle the top section of the tank but water should start to flow from the area between the two case sections if any still remains inside the filter.

The tip is that you assembly the entire grid assembly outside of the filter case. I didn’t realize this during one of our earlier videos but tried it this time and it is super simple.

You simply place the Spider, grid locator to where you can work on it and position the new or cleaned grids in the locations on the spider. There are 8 grids total and one is smaller than the others and this is marked on the spider as ‘Small Grid’.

Just carefully position all of them in place. Once you have all of them in position there’s what they call a filter template that goes in place next and it’s to help you line everything up at the top before placing the manifold on the top. Once you have the manifold positioned correctly, the two nuts can be secured in place. Be careful not to overtighten these when snugging them down.

Now you have a fully assembled filter grid ready to be placed back in the filter case.

I’ve already cleaned the filter case top and bottom and inspected all the O-rings. Before placing the grid assembly back in place I’m taking one more chance to inspect everything and put lubricant on the O-rings.

In this quick video we’ll show you how to fix a noisy HVAC return air vent.

So, what happens is due to the volume of air passing through this type vent cover it causes a vibration of the fins or louvers resulting in the noise.

In order to correct this noise, it’s necessary to adjust the fins slightly to decrease the amount of turbulence if you will from the air flowing through the vent.

It’s a very simple process and only requires slight movement on some or all of the fins. It’s not necessary to get carried away so you might make a few adjustments and then give it a try.

Another tip before starting is you might want to wrap the end of your needle nose pliers if that’s what you are using with some tap to keep from scratching the fins.

We also noticed that the vent cover needed to be turned around. When approaching the vent and looking up in this case, you can see up into the return air vent. In this case, the vent cover simply needs to be turned around. Since this one was a bit dusty, we cleaned it while we had it down and then reinstalled it.

After installation, it required a bit more TUNING to completely eliminate that annoying noise…

In this quick video we’ll show you how to fix those leaky garden hose connections by replacing the washer.

This is a very simple repair that anyone can do that helps you stop wasting water.

The leak typically occurs where the garden hose connects to the spigot or at the other end where you might have a hose end sprayer connected like we’re showing or perhaps a water sprinkler or maybe even another water hose.

On this end the washer would be in the nozzle or sprinkler where it connects to the hose.

The most common cause of the leak is that the washer inside the connection is worn out or damaged. In some cases, it may be completely missing. I like using washers that are bright colors like these yellows ones so I can tell at a quick glance if it’s in place or not. I also like using this style with the little tabs that help hold it in place on the threads.

The washers are very inexpensive and it’s a good idea to keep a few spares on hand and it makes sense to go ahead and replace them maybe a few times a year or for sure when you hook your outdoor hoses up after being disconnected for the winter.

COSTCO Pergola Build

diy collaborative 2022-02-17 | After completing the new concrete pour as part of our patio makeover, we decided we would like some sort of shade structure. We looked at a few options and decided on a kit from COSTCO. One of the things we liked about this kit is the fact that it has a retractable canopy since we didn’t necessarily always want our main patio area to be shaded.

The model we decided on is the COSTCO 12’ x 20’ Paragon Outdoor Pergola.

Assembly of the kit was a multi-day project for us since weather and other scheduling issues were vying for our time.

It is recommended to have at least three people for many of the steps which we found essential for ease of assembly.

This model arrives packaged in four boxes. Some very heavy!

Unpacking: Find the box with assembly instructions and read over the entire document before beginning.

Compare the contents of the four cartons to the full parts list. If any parts are missing a phone number is provided to call for replacements.

As you unpack the pieces it’s a good idea to lay them out in separate staging areas. Each part is labeled and can be referenced on the parts list.

Location: Select the location for the pergola. In our case, we are installing on an existing concrete patio.

Required Tools:
Tape Measure
Work Gloves
Safety Goggles
Philips Screwdriver
Level
2 small ladders
Wooden Mallet
Scissors
Liquid Soap or WD40 Lubricant
Hey Key (Included)
3/8” masonry drill bit to drill holes if installing on concrete

NOTE: Cordless screwdriver or drill with Phillips head bit and # 5/32nd Hex Driver Bit is highly recommended but not required.

We found a few damaged parts when unpacking but we were able to straighten the parts that we found that had been bent or crushed in shipping. The kit also includes a small tube of touch-up paint which comes in handy. Many of the parts were packed inside the other parts as we opened the packages.

We also used a small tray to hold all the assembly bolts, washers, etc. for ease of identification.

Since we had plenty of room, we fully assembled the pergola and then adjusted it by moving it to the desired location and then secured it to the concrete slab. Initially, we were not exactly sure of the placement on our patio and this allowed us to adjust its location slightly.

During the time that it was not anchored down yet, we used several five-gallon buckets filled with rocks and tied the pergola down at each end for safety since it was August in Texas and thunderstorms were imminent.

Stump Grinder

In this video we’re using the ECHO BearCat SG340 Stump Grinder to remove some old tree stumps and surface roots around our property.

Be sure to use safety gear when using equipment like this.

Eye, ear and head protection are a must at all times. It is also recommended to make sure that other people, children and pets are nowhere near to the unit when in use. While using it, we experienced small pieces of wood and rocks flying like small projectiles. So again, use caution while using this and be safe.

This unit is 23” wide and is small enough to fit through standard size gates and weighs right at 200 pounds, so it’s perfect for the homeowner. It has a horizontal cutting head which is 7” in diameter with 12 carbide cutting teeth. It has oversized pneumatic tires for ease of transport and uses gasoline.

Most of the stump grinders I’ve ever seen have a vertical cutting head so I wasn’t sure how well it would work, but overall we are very happy with the performance of the unit.
