Budapest Resisting Anti-Roma Fascism errconutube 2023-08-31 | 👥🚫On August 29, in Budapest’s 10th district, hundreds of supporters of the fascist political party Mi Hazánk (Our Homeland Movement), gathered to listen to their leaders’ hate-filled speeches.🗣 Mi Hazánk MP Előd Novák repeated the lie of so-called ‘Gypsy crime’, dwelt a bit on the perils of ‘ethnic replacement’ and EU-induced multiculturalism, and in a rambling speech that amounted to direct incitement to racial hatred, declared to the cheering mob that that the land of Hungarians will never become a Gypsy-land. He warned that “while Hungarians do not have enough children, the number of Gypsies doubles every generation.”👤 László Toroczkai, the leader of Mi Hazánk, had earlier stated on national television that those who commit crime "should be practically liquidated from society. It doesn't matter if we keep them locked up somewhere or we remove them with the death penalty, but society must be cleansed of such parasites who pose a danger to people walking on the street." 💬In his speech, he emphasized that ‘stating the facts is not racism’, and declared that Mi Hazánk "must come to power within ten years, otherwise there will be no solution to these problems."✊🇭🇺 An hour earlier, another demonstration in Budapest’s Széchenyi Square outside the Interior Ministry was held by anti-racists protesting the authorities' failure to ban the Mi Hazánk event.✊ In a joint statement, a group of Hungarian human rights organisations condemned the openly racist manifestations of Mi Hazánk and its supporters. They cited examples of hate speech about ‘Gypsy crime’ which included calls for a halt to the "irresponsible reproduction" of the Roma, and claims that "mixed marriages further worsen our chances of survival", which is predicated upon “the revival of a healthy racial consciousness".‼️ The NGOs described such statements and rallies as completely unacceptable in a democratic society because they stigmatize an entire ethnic community and incite antagonism. They called on the police to act more decisively in the case of obviously racist meetings in order to prevent and prosecute hate crimes.The ERRC fully supports this position. Freedom of association must not be stretched to provide cover for extremist rallies whose explicit aim is to incite anti-Roma hatred and the spread of racist terror.

Marko Stalović – Those beatings haunt me errconutube 2023-02-27 | In 2017, Marko Stalović reported his car as stolen to the police in Serbia. Instead of investigating the theft, the police assumed he was lying and tortured him for thirteen hours to try and force a confession.Marko was made to kneel in a room surrounded by eight officers. The officers beat, kicked, and racially abused him. When he would not confess, an officer began whipping his outstretched hands with a leather whip. One officer put a plastic bag over his head and squeezed the air out, suffocating him. The same policeman also told him that if he did not confess they would electrocute him. Another cocked his gun, pointed it at him, and told him he would shoot him in the hand to give him “a memory that would stay with him for a lifetime”. The police officers also threatened to imprison his wife and told the couple that they had a car waiting to take their children to an orphanage. The officers told them that they did not have a right to call their lawyer and, after subjecting them to a polygraph test, the officers coerced them into signing documents they had not read and could not take away with them. Years after the traumatizing events Marko still has health problems, severe emotional stress, but also a strong will to win his case before the European Court of Human Rights. #JusticeForRoma #RomaintheCriminalJusticeSystem #shngale

15 years since the landmark case, D.H. v the Czech Republic errconutube 2022-11-14 | 15 years ago, on 13th November 2007, a group of Roma supported by the European Roma Rights Centre defeated the government of the Czech Republic at the European Court of Human Rights.It is arguably still the biggest Roma Rights case in history. The case, D.H. v the Czech Republic paved the way for the fight against school segregation, and opened the doors for similar litigation right across Europe.The fight for an equal education continues today, and is why we are still litigating across seven countries to ensure Romani kids have the same chances as non-Roma in education. Litigation alone cannot end structural racism, but it is a very good place to start.
