In this video we take a quick look at the MUM M8 DSP processing multiple sources in Ableton Live.
The low pass filter gives the recognisable super smooth vacuum like tone sucking sound which works magic on complex sources. The addition of clipped overdrive and intentionally aggressive self oscillating resonance compliment the smooth filter core by juxtaposing it into more wasp like territory with acidic squeals and a more gritty sound.
Unique to the plug-in are a clock bleed switch, introducing audible artifacts into the filter path emulating some of the quirks of the original hardware, and a Bit Depth control for downsampling the input for a more character-rich output.

The square wave sub out from the Digiwave voice of the MCO is patched through the Pip Filter, with a high resonance and low frequency setting. The sine wave out of the Pip LFO is patched to the MEGA-MILTON’s mixer, combined with a very short and snappy exponential envelope from Pam. The modulation mix is patched to the first frequency CV input of the Pip Filter with the attenuverter only slightly increased, for a subtle zap and slow modulation to the cutoff which sweeps back and forth through only a few of the lower harmonics. This subtle sweep combined with a light, slow pitch modulation to the MCO’s droning square wave is the key to producing that hollow digeridoo like sound. Finally, the built in VCA of the Pip Filter is used along with the Pip Slope triggered by Pam to add a repeating rhythm to the hypnotic tones.
The new Pip LFO and Pip Filter join the Pip Slope, offering a compact but flexible group of modules great for adding functionality to a system with tight space or combined as a unique 12hp analogue synth voice.

A fast x4 trigger is patched from Pamela’s PRO Workout to the ‘Trig’ input of the Pip Filter. The frequency is lowered and resonance is increased until it is just at the edge of self oscillation, producing a classic percussive ‘ping’. A V/Oct pitch sequence from Pam is then patched to the Frequency input, producing a simple rising melody reminiscent of the warm analogue wood block or conga sounds of vintage drum machines. Next, the square wave out of the Pip LFO is patched to the first frequency input of the Pip Filter, with very slight inversion to modulate the melody. The resonance is subtly increased to lengthen the ping and the Pip LFO is switched into VCO mode, introducing audio rate FM to the filter frequency. The Pip Slope is then patched to sweep the frequency of the FM and the filter frequency is manually increased, producing high pitched chaotic bursts of analogue filter FM.
The new Pip LFO and Pip Filter join the Pip Slope, offering a compact but flexible group of modules great for adding functionality to a system with tight space or combined as a unique 12hp analogue synth voice.

The new Pip Filter is modulated by the saw wave out of the Pip LFO and the square wave output of the Pip LFO is used to clock Pamela’s PRO Workout. A triangle wave output from Pam is then patched back to the Pip LFO to modulate the Frequency, creating an exponentially ramping tempo that loops over as the modules feedback with each other. The Pip LFO’s additional shape outputs are patched to modulate the MCO and MFX along with the Pip Filter, further emphasising the ramping tempo. Finally, the LFO frequency is lowered, causing a rippling slow down effect across the patch.
The new Pip LFO and Pip Filter join the Pip Slope, offering a compact but flexible group of modules great for adding functionality to a system with tight space or combined as a unique 12hp analogue synth voice.

The frequency of the Pip LFO is set via a manual control and voltage control input. The module features a unipolar square wave output along with both bipolar and uni-polar triangle, saw and sine waveform outputs. When VCO mode is activated, the frequency jumps to audio range and will track V/Oct for approx 5 octaves. A reset input allows the LFO waveform cycle to be reset and produces hard sync functionality in VCO mode.
The Pip LFO’s compact design makes it easy to add a modulation source and an analogue voice into any system.

The filter cutoff is controlled via both knob control and dual CV inputs with a built in attenuverter. Resonance is manually controlled and will reach into self oscillation with rough V/Oct tracking. A trigger input allows the filter to be pinged for percussive plucked type sounds. Finally, a built in VCA (normalled open) allows for additional independent amplitude control of the filtered signal.
The “Pip Filter’ provides a classic lowpass filter sound in a small form factor with many useful features for sound sculpting.

The VCV version provides a realistic sounding emulation of the hardware module’s features with the addition of an optional clock noise setting producing increased bleed like a poorly calibrated hardware MUM M8.
The original motivation for the MUM M8 came from discussing filters in classic samplers with the artist Jack Adams – aka Mumdance. Jack suggested investigating the S950’s filter well known for its use in classic early jungle and hardcore. From that point onward Jack provided inspiration, help and feedback in the development of the filter. Big up Mumdance.

Patch notes:
A simple track is made with beats from the Squid Salmple sequenced by Pam along with mellow stereo chords from the the CIZZLE's oscillator A. A warm stereo Juno inspired bass line is produced using the MCO's Virtana voice making use of its built in filtering and chorus. The full track is mixed down in stereo using the MEGA-TANG and patched to the Send input of the new S.B.G-PRO with its stereo 6.35mm jacks connected directly to the MFX Pedal's I/O and the return outs patched in to the HPO (main out). The gain of S.B.G Send and Return sections is increased followed by the Dry|Wet Mix to bring in flanging from the MFX Pedal. For greater variation, a triangle wave LFO from Pam is patched to the Mix CV input to smoothly modulate the blend of the FX. Finally, the CV is repatched to the Expression input for conditioning before continuing on via the included ‘floating ring’ cable to the MFX Pedal's Expression input assigned to modulate delay time.
Patches in this video require at least firmware v188 which introduces the new Pitch parameter that allows sample pitch to be set independently of time. (visit: busycircuits.com/alm022 to download the latest firmware).

Patch notes:
The TAZM-O and Osc A of the CIZZLE are used to create a true stereo synth voice with each oscillator patched through one side of the MCFx2. The 2 filters are linked to work in stereo, both responding to the same envelope modulation triggered by the ASQ-1. A second lead voice made with Osc B of the CIZZLE produces powerful CZ style resonant swells on top of the fast sequence and is sent through the MFX for long modulated echoes.
The stereo voice is uniquely sequenced in combination by a short step sequence from the Quaid Megaslope and a slow looped random from Pamela's PRO Workout, the 2 voltage sources are mixed with the MEGA MILTON and patched through the quantiser section of the ASQ-1 to be locked to a musical scale. In multiple places, additional triggered envelopes are provided by the Pam PRO using its special 'Trig' modifiers to allow the selected wave shape to be triggered by the ASQ-1. This is a great way to get more envelopes if Quaid and Pip Slope are both already used up.

Satoshi and Makoto are a twin duo that received international acclaim in 2017 with the release of their debut album “CZ-5000 Sounds and Sequences” on Safe Trip. In 2020, their follow up album "CZ-5000 Sounds and Sequences Vol. II” was released, solidifying their dedication to the Casio CZ synthesizer.
The new ALM CIZZLE is a dual digital 'phase distortion' VCO inspired by the classic Casio CZ series synthesizers. It brings the specifics of CZ style phase distortion (PD) synthesis into Eurorack with the inclusion of primary and secondary oscillator layering and detuning (with up to 8 voice chord generation), extended morphable PD wave generation algorithms, unique resonance wave generation, plus specific 'end of chain' ring modulation and noise modes that are key to the CZ sound. The CIZZLE is available now from fine ALM stockists worldwide.

In general most forms of sync expect a standard 24PPQN clock and Run 'Din Sync' type signal set for the Clk and Run inputs. These settings can be changed from Pam's BPM menu to accomodate other common clock PPQN speeds and Run or Reset signals to align with the sync signals produced by other hardware devices.

It includes a stereo line input converter for incorporating line level external sources into a Eurorack system, a fixed 4 input mixer with breakout attenuator for combining signals, a gated slew limiter for adding slides to sequences, a sample and hold with analog white noise with a myriad of uses such as generative melodies or producing percussive textures and finally a buffered mult for droop free signal distribution with handy LEDs to monitor.
All sections are normalised to help with typical use cases such as generating random CV from the sample & hold section, a smooth random source from the slew output and breaking out a standalone attenuator from the fourth mixer input.
The 'MEGA MILTON' provides essential classic synthesizer building blocks for patching in any Eurorack system. In this video we take a look at all of its features.
