The tree had extensive decay throughout the lower stem, a large cavity in the top quarter of the canopy and a prominent lean towards a house. A large section of the standing stem will be retained as a wildlife pole for the next 10 years at least. Thereafter it may be shortened a bit more. 2 of us completed the work by early-mid afternoon. We were able to discharge the woodchip at the base of the tree to lessen the impact and deflection of falling logs throughout. The whole area was logged in the 60s I believe. But this tree was evidently left standing because it was comparatively a poor specimen of little commercial value.
$2K Compact Woodchipper. First job Reg Coates 2023-01-14 | I bought this Powerfist chipper for $2000 from Princess auto with a view to modifying it for easy transportation and back yard access. It comes as standard with a wide axle and hitch attachment for truck or quad etc. I shortened the axle and welded the machine onto a cart. The cart is rated to carry 800lbs. the chipper weighs less than 450. I added a winch for pulling it up ramps and hills and made some removable, additional wheels for extra stability. The chipper is a drum/gravity fed with 2 blades approximately 11" across. 420cc, 15Hp motor. I will run it for a month before deciding whether to put a bigger motor on. The overall build seems very solid, surprisingly for the cost.

Rigging Wrench Catches Tree Top. Reg Coates 2020-08-10 | The Rigging Wrench Version 2 is an alternative to a rigging block, pulley or X-Ring, but for lighter loads. I also own and have regularly used version 1, but 2 is a definite improvement. Where it stands out verses blocks and pulleys etc, is that, by design, the rope is allowed to run freely in one direction but adds friction in the other. This allows the worker to tension and raise loads, and then lower them with finger tip control. Purposely creating friction at the top of a rigging point as opposed to the bottom will also negate the potentially dangerous 2:1 loading at the rigging point, making it safer for the climber. If you run a small operation such as mine, often working as a 2 person team, the rope friction created by the Wrench make it safe and easy for the climber to take control of the rigging line, thus freeing up the ground worker to use both hands when laying sections out as they come down on the line, as shown in the video.
