The highest form of that, for me, is to make a medley.Why record 10 separate videos when I can simply play them all in a row, right?I knew HI3 had great music because I watched some of the animated shorts from it before, and I loved Moon Halo ever since it released. But the final push to actually try the game for me was when the Da Capo graduation short was released, and I decided I'd very likely enjoy the story because I loved the bittersweet feeling it gave me, even without having much context for it.I got...pretty consumed at some point. I didn't expect to get that invested, and if I started talking about it here, I wouldn't stop. Bottom line is, I loved it a lot. It's pretty clear that the creators really care about the story and characters, and it shows. In my mind, there are three more or less cohesive parts to this "medley," though even calling it that should probably be taken with a grain of salt, considering how much time I give between some of the pieces, completely separating them at times. It's mostly because I didn't want to cut anything too short, so all the songs are given their time. The first part would end on Starfall, and the second on TruE. The third is just Da Capo, serving as the ending.Huge thanks to @ccmusicc for transcribing literally all the songs and giving me a wonderful sheet music base to play on. Sometimes I changed a lot, sometimes I stuck to the sheets, but it definitely made things so much easier for me.Personal awards list and thoughts:Most difficult - Dual EgoFavorite to listen to - Moon HaloMost troublesome to record - Moon Halo (because I couldn't decide on how to play it up until the very end; I'd been improvising on it for months even before I started working on the medley, which, turns out, was terrible for actually recording it) and Nightglow close second Most pleasant to record - Starfall, Rubia close secondFavorite to play - Dual Ego, NO CONTEST, I absolutely love playing it and I've practiced it the most by far out of all the songsRecording notes:Would I be able to record this whole thing in one continuous take? Theoretically, yes. In practice? No. This video was recorded in one sitting (two if you count me getting up to reset the camera) but I picked and chose the better takes from a two-hour recording session. It's summer, I can't run the AC while recording, my fingers were sticking to the keys and like 3/4 of the medley is so, SO loud. So I decided I'd simply glue parts together in hopes it'll end up sounding nice. I think it turned out pretty smooth in terms of sound despite some stumbles here and there, but those are pretty unavoidable with something this long, even with split takes. KNIVESs piano - Trigun Stampede OST // Piano Cover Caliko 2023-04-14 | It's been ages since I found something that suited my playstyle this well!I started watching Trigun Stampede a few days ago, and the moment I heard the villain pianist's theme I knew it was written for me specifically. I saw it called "Interstellar OST but anime" and honestly, it's not far off! It's in A minor, and the harmony and overall vibe is similar in places, and both make for great piano arrangements.I transcribed this one in one sitting yesterday, and I learned to play it and recorded it in the span of 24 hours LOL, you could say I got possessed for a day. I swear, it's so much fun though. It plays to all my strengths! I love love love those left-hand octaves playing the melody while the right hand has all those 16th notes, the hand crossings, the triplet melody against the 16th note ostinato, man I just love the whole thing. And as I listened to it, I realized it reminded me a bit of another OST in style, and I was right - Tatsuya Kato who composed the music also worked on the OST for Revue Starlight along with some others, which I covered so much of back in the day (almost 5 years ago?!) Side note: Through this entire recording my doggo was asleep, splayed out on the carpet, right next to my foot. Spirited Away (Joe Hisaishi) - The Sixth Station // Piano Caliko 2023-02-01 | Years later, I've finally gotten around to playing the last Spirited Away track on my list. The most somber one, and the one that took me the longest to really appreciate.There was a storm outside while I was setting up my equipment - a Winter storm! Lightning and hail and all! That's crazy rare here, but it sure set the mood for this piece. A long while ago I said that I would cover this track when the mood was right, and I suppose today was the day. La Valse dAmélie - Yann Tiersen // Piano Caliko 2023-01-19 | A more waltz-like, melancholy take on the track! Only after recording did I realize how different my interpretation is from how I hear it played in a lot of other videos, but that's how I've been practicing it for a while now and that's what feels most right to me! I usually feel more comfortable taking a track slower if I know there are enough different interpretations of it out there already. More to choose from! I've been recording so much less, it's a rough winter. The scarce snow days we get always make me want to try and make a video, but other than that I'm stuck in "In Progress" land with a few other projects, and otherwise, I play more for myself lately. I'm on a Chopin roll.Speaking of projects--I love medleys, but man do they take a while to finish! So, in between working on more time-consuming things, I think I'll share some simpler pieces to keep up the recording habit. The short, cold winter days have been really tiring. Once Upon a December - Anastasia // Piano Caliko 2022-12-17 | It sure is December 👀The video pretty overexposed so it's hard to see, but there's snow outside! The winter vibes are real over hereThe arrangement is very strongly based on Emilie Pandolfi's version (though I didn't stick to it 1:1), and I have to say, it's not easy! It took me so, so long to learn that chromatic part in the middle. And the beginning is so tiring after redoing takes a few times! I had to take a break before getting this take because my right hand refused to cooperate after two hours of attempts. I still adore the arrangement though! As for why it's been so long - life. There's something about working on a bigger project for a while and finally seeing it come together. Even more so when I get really lucky and manage to get it recorded in one take, which is the case here! Made in Abyss is one of the most unique soundtracks I've ever heard and I've been listening to it consistently ever since I've watched the show a few years ago. 'Tomorrow' is one of my favorite pieces of music ever written, though I've looped 'Underground River' and 'Hanezeve' just as much. Surprisingly, by FAR the most fun to play out of the medley was 'Pathway.' I took some liberties with it, though, and switched some phrases around.I transcribed 'Underground River' into sheet music a few years ago already, and I started 'Tomorrow' around that time too -- and that's also where I stopped. Kevin Penkin is very, very creative with his writing, and I struggled so much to translate the instrumentation into something that would sound even slightly coherent on a piano. I struggled with that up until the very end, honestly, and it's also why I stopped 'Tomorrow' in the medley where I did. That vocal part that comes after is absolutely insane, I love it to bits, but it doesn't work on piano at all lol. Also, I'm very sure I got the harmony wrong sometimes because it's so tricky. And sometimes I just didn't know how to transition from one track to the other, hope it's not too jarring in places! When I have a one-take recording like this, I make a choice: I decide the fumbles and occasional mistakes are worth it for the integrity of the video. And the fun doggo cameos. You can also hear the rattle of his collar at one point and some steps, sorry about that lol I'm just happy he didn't do anything that would completely ruin the take. I will write this down into sheet music, I have most of it more or less written down already so it hopefully won't take too long -- also, I know I'm terribly behind on many, many sheet music requests. If you've personally asked me about some sheet music I've said I'd do but didn't, I'm very sorry but it's so time consuming, and that kind of time is hard to find lately. I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the Season 2 soundtrack, that one 'Von' sounding track keeps me up at night. Time - Hans Zimmer 2022 // Piano Caliko 2022-09-13 | How many times can I play this piece? Well, a lot, apparently. I honestly debated if I should play Time this year - it feels like the way I'm playing it doesn't change that much, but last year's version didn't quite leave me satisfied, being much more restrained, and my personal favorite was the one I recorded in 2020. So, here I tried to make this more of a spiritual successor to that one, just with the new piano! I think I still wasn't quite used to the Steinway last year, I definitely feel much more comfortable playing it now! I'm surprised at how nice and smooth recording was for this one - I really just set everything up, sat down, went wild for one single take and that was that.I think this might be the last time I play Time, at least for a while! Unless inspiration strikes and I suddenly feel like playing it in a completely new way... Sakura Nagashi 桜流し - Utada Hikaru (Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo) // Piano Cover Caliko 2022-09-03 | This is the first real re-recording I'm doing on this channel, and fittingly, it's one of my favorite arrangements of all time! If you dig deep enough, you might find a video of me playing this piece in 2017, so 5 years ago! I still had a single mic then and a different piano, and while I'm not sure that this recording of it is actually better, it's certainly different! It's one of those arrangements that I keep coming back to, and it's so, so nice to play. Elden Ring - Main Theme // Piano Solo Caliko 2022-07-12 | Or: me going with the flow and hoping for the best! The time for Elden Ring covers has probably passed for many people, but for me, it wouldn't have made sense to record this any earlier! I only finished the game about two weeks ago (and still play on and off in NG+).The arrangement is, once again, the kind where I did not transcribe it before playing it, so for now, there is no sheet music (sorry!). I could call it improvised, though I practiced the theme and chords for a good while before actually sitting down and recording it, pretty much since the game itself was released!So, these are variations, not a completely faithful cover of the main theme! For those interested - Elden Ring was my introduction to Souls games. Funnily enough, what got me interested enough to play it in the first place was the open-world aspect, not the famous, frustratingly-difficult mechanics that I've heard so much about. Those intimidated me, honestly. But it turns out that past the beautiful, immersive world, those mechanics are right up my alley too and I got so, so hooked. I wonder if I'll try the other games... Hollow Knight - City of Tears // Piano Cover Caliko 2022-07-03 | I think this might be the first time since I got my tablet where the sheet music simply defeated me. Even with my lightning fast swipes, I couldn't find enough time to lift my hand from the keys in this one without messing up lol. Printing it is! I love this track but wow was it tricky to play, it took me so long to understand how to play that second half, that rhythm is really, really difficult! While practicing I felt like I was doing math at times. Terrifying, for me. The sheet music I used is by Stoh, I'll link it in the comments, per usual! I made some minor changes, mostly in the second half where I simplified the right hand, but the music is pretty straightforward so I don't know if I should edit the sheet music specifically for how I play it? Dearly Beloved Concert Paraphrase Caliko 2022-05-20 | Top of the Most Challenging Uploads playlist, easilySo, hi, hello it's been a while! I say this quite often, don't I? Maybe you're used to it by now? Though I can't promise I'll upload regularly again just yet - I'm almost done with my master's degree! It's eating up a lot of my time now.You might think - but Caliko, you've played Dearly Beloved like 5 months ago - and yes! That's true! But this is a very special arrangement, and in my head it's completely separate from "regular" Dearly Beloved variations I like to play. This is the Piano Collections Concert Paraphrase, which is completely insane and I love it precisely for that reason. Really, I've been craving to record something challenging again. I haven't really pushed myself when recording since the grand piano change! That was over a year ago. I've been playing pretty easy/comfortable stuff for a while now, and while that's still likely what I'll be focusing on, I do love playing something like this once in a while! Don't be fooled, though, much of my practice time off-camera consists of these types of pieces. I've been practicing this track for years...many years. And yet! I still feel like I could have done better - some bits are sloppy in my eyes - but to be fair, getting through it without a mistake feels impossible to me. There's always something, simply because it's so tiring that I get sticky fingers after playing through it a few times lol. And some of the jumps are brutal! Landing those is a pure lottery, I'd say I get through that One Worst Jumpy Part without a mistake about... 40% of the time.So, that was that for an update! EIGHTY-SIX OST - Piano Eightysix-One (Voices of the Chord | Avid) [EP 14 OST] // Piano Cover Caliko 2022-04-01 | Hi, hello, it's been way too long pt. 2!I've really missed recording, so I'm super happy I managed to find the time for this one. I ended up listening to the 86 soundtrack thanks to a commenter from one of my previous videos, so big thanks to him! I heard this track once and got hooked instantly. Fits my style very well, I think, so I got to transcribing right away! The official title of this track is Piano VIIIVI-i but it seems it follows the same melody as "Avid" and "Voices of the Chord" from the OST so I'm putting those in the title as well!Due to the improvised nature of the track, I took some liberties with my interpretation of it, mostly regarding the tempo. I already recorded my take on Dearly Beloved "properly" in 2019, but my piano was so out of tune back there, I shudder thinking about it... also I wanted to see how it'd sound on the new piano! Also, my most frequent commenter suggested starting off the year with Dearly Beloved, and I thought, why not?It's been a while since I've uploaded an improv-style cover, and the reason I even attempt those and learned how to *not* play from sheet music is because of this piece, and even more specifically - because of how Kyle Landry plays it. I've been looking forward to his Yearly Beloved videos since 2012 and I quite literally never get tired of hearing new spins on Kingdom Hearts themes.Some stumbles here and there but I went with the flow, you know how it goes!Here's to 2022! Unlike the Rebellion OST, the soundtrack of the original series is sort of split into two halves in my mind - one would be the extremely memorable themes that are instantly recognizable after watching the show, like Decretum, or Sis Puella Magica, or any of the other character motifs and battle themes that really, really stand out.The other is what this medley is made of, maybe the one exception being Inevitabilis for having a character theme in it! Those tracks that truly, truly serve as background music, most of them originally being played on piano and nothing else. I wondered if I should make a big medley for the entire series OST after all, but the moment I played the tracks that you can hear here and then added in something like Conturbatio, it completely collapsed the mood and I felt like I'd have to put in everything else then as well to justify it. When it comes to medleys of those more recognizable themes, Animenz already did an absolutely amazing one that I don't feel the need to challenge lol (though, I'm not ruling out doing my own take on those further down the line!)There's a lot of silence in this one, it's slow and overall easy to play, but this is my personal favorite type of music to put on in the background while I'm doing anything else! I'm a bit behind on my sheet music due to time constraints, but I'll put this one up when I write it down properly, hopefully soon-ish.As a completely technical sidenote, after 5 years I finally figured out that I can reduce the noise in my recordings after they're already recorded... I feel like a fool. Goodbye - Ramsay (Arcane) // Piano Cover Caliko 2021-12-10 | 3 acts, 3 piano coversSo, with this, I'm waving goodbye to Arcane for the next few years until season 2! It felt pretty obvious to me that after covering the final tracks of act 2 and 3, I should probably cover this one too. I honestly thought it'd make a pretty good piano cover, but now I'm kind of on the fence about how this one turned out. The chords and melodies are pretty repetitive so it was tricky to give the latter half a progression with texture alone. What Could Have Been - Sting ft. Ray Chen (Arcane) // Piano Cover Caliko 2021-11-22 | Well, that was a ride! Arcane concluded and instantly became one of my favorite series ever. I was going to beg Riot for a season 2 under this video but, thankfully, it's already been announced!This one was much, much trickier to cover than Guns for Hire, as 1) it's not as obvious rhythmically 2) there's more layers to it, and 3) Ray Chen? So, I searched for this song after I watched the last episode, saw it featured Ray Chen, and suddenly all the pieces fell into place and I realized why there was so, so much violin in the OST! The violin solo in this song was, well, definitely written for violin, and it's not very intuitive to play on the piano. That was tricky to get right, but I did my best!It'll probably take me a bit longer to finish up the sheet music for this one too because right now it's a mess and a half! I'd say this isn't really my usual style of cover, as I've refrained from arranging OP's or ED's since so many people are doing that already, but for this one, I made an exception! It's the quiet bits between the chorus that drew me to this song and made me loop it, but I love it overall! And I really love when the time signature is a bit tricky, here it's an alternating 7/8 and 6/8 throughout the song, which I found super interesting. Well, I'm probably not cut out for arranging fast-paced pieces like this, but to learn new things I need to get out of my comfort zone...or so they say.Things got a bit sloppy for a second by the end because the worst thing you can do while recording is suddenly think "omg I'm almost done I almost got it" and lose focus immediately after. Belle (2021) OST - Lend Me Your Voice [心のそばに - 竜とそばかすの姫] // Piano Cover Caliko 2021-08-01 | 123... 123...I probably mentioned this somewhere before, but I absolutely love waltzes, and this one had me hooked on first listenI watched the trailer for Belle a bit over a week ago and IMMEDIATELY took note of the incredible music. I went on to search if complete versions were available somewhere, and lucky for me, they literally released them the day before! Or some of them, at least. The entire soundtrack was released two days ago. Some of the songs are just incredible, this one being my favorite next to Gales of Song (Uta yo), which was the trailer song that got me hooked in the first place. I highly recommend checking them out! Kaho Nakamura (Belle) has an amazing voice that I cannot do justice with a pianoI'm really looking forward to the movie, too! It's been a bit over a year since my last take on it, so here's my 2021 version of Hans Zimmer's iconic Inception track! I tried to start it out a bit more like the original this time around, sticking to that steady 4/4 beat in the lower registers at the beginning. Hirohashi Makiko] Caliko 2021-05-03 | I'm on a Ghibli roll~I found this one while looking through Hirohashi Makiko's arrangements for 'The Promise of the World," and pretty much started learning it at the same time as that! What surprised me when learning it was how comfortable and plain fun the arrangement was to play. It's so interesting! There's something about it as a whole that makes it very satisfying to play, and I grew to love it much more than I did by just listening! To any pianists out there, I recommend giving this one a try!About the movie - I think Mononoke might be my favorite Ghibli film. It was also the first Ghibli movie I got a glimpse of, because I have a very vivid memory of being 7 or so, and seeing one of the more graphic scenes of the movie. It got seared into my memory. It includes 27 out of 45 tracks from the movie, spanning the entirety of it, all of it chronological, starting with the first track up until the last. The fact that I recorded all of this in one take is some sort of small miracle, I was fully prepared to have to glue bits of good takes together to make it coherent. I'm really glad I didn't have to after all since I think having it be one take really adds to the performance, keeps the flow of it intact! The Rebellion soundtrack has been one of my favorite soundtracks for years now and I can't tell how many times I've listened to it at this point. I could write an entire essay on why I love it so much, I must have looped it hundreds of times by now. The recurring motifs, the way the music supports the narrative so perfectly - there's something about it as a whole that's so incredibly memorable. Yuki Kajiura really outdid herself with the Madoka OST in general! And I love the movie just as much as its music. Every once in a while I'm in an "I should rewatch Rebellion" mood, and it doesn't matter that I know every frame of it by heart, it never fails to be a great experience. I think it's the kind of movie that can only really be appreciated on second viewing, and gets better the more you notice and pay attention toI've wanted to record a medley like this for at least 3 years now, which pretty much marks the very beginning of my transcription attempts. I still was too much of a newbie back then to get anywhere, and I quickly realized it'd be way too big of a project for my arranging abilities at the timeFast forward to October 2020, when I started this project for the 5th time or so, once again from scratch. I transcribed it in the span of a few days, finally having gained enough experience along the way to finish the sheet music! Some parts of it were more challenging than others - flame of despair being both my favorite track and the most difficult one to play. It took some practice! Especially the very ending, I still mess that up half the time. But I think it was worth it in the end. Overall, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out! At first, I thought it might not be as memorable as Liyue, but now I think it might age pretty well since I'm already starting to feel nostalgic when I boot the game and hear some of the tracks! Initially, I wanted to end it on the Dawn Winery Theme to give it a more loopable quality, but then I decided "Tender Strength" sounds so much like a nice pleasant epilogue/ending track that I added it at the end. Genshin Impact OST - Forsaken Child of Ancient Times (Dvalins Nest) // Piano Cover Caliko 2020-10-12 | So, I recently stumbled upon this soundtrack and got caught completely off-guard by how good it is! These types of soundtracks are my favorite, orchestral background music with memorable melodies.Also, the OST is ridiculously long and extremely confusing in the naming department. I haven't played the game, which is why looking through the tracks and comments leads me to believe it's like 5 hours long in sum (probably not, but that's what it feels like to me so far). For example, I found some of the Liyue tracks aren't named, which leaves me with around 7 different arrangements for Liyue Mountain alone apparently? They're numbered, but I'm not sure if the numbers are consistent. This track apparently played in Stormterrors Lair, but I also found 4 other arrangements of this theme, all of them often helpfully named "Stormterror's Lair". I might just get the game for the music, to be honest lol, I'll probably understand then[Edit 2 weeks later: I'm playing the game, I get it now!]Also, I'm thinking of transcribing a medley of some of the OST, because I think a lot of it would work really well for piano. Arnór Dan)11:44 Bless (feat. Arnór Dan)Yoko Kanno wrote one incredible soundtrack for this show! I kept listening to it over and over again ever since I watched it, and that was years ago. Talk about a lasting impression! I have no idea how many times I've looped "Von", one of my favorite pieces of music ever written, probably, and it still makes me feel things even after all this time. It has such a unique mood to it, makes me think of winterI wrote this medley down about a year ago (though I changed some things since then) and struggled with learning it because of - ironically - Von. If you look at how I play it, it's an absolute mess of me crossing my hands left over right and back, over, under, anything goes. And the reason for that is - the polyrhythm of playing triplets against that constant rhythm that starts with the right hand is ridiculously difficult, and no matter how hard I tried, my left hand refused to understand that it had the melody now, and my right hand refused to understand that it should just keep doing the same thing. So, I improvised and I hoped for the best. Sidenote: after playing it for so long and writing it down in the first place you'd think I'd have it memorized by now lolI call this a medley, but a few of the tracks I play in their entirety - Walt, the large majority of Kvak, most of Birden, and all of Bless. The only ones I shortened were von (it's 6 mins long and a bit repetitive) and Seele, since it sounds so much like Kvak (or Fugl, it's all the same theme after all)I already recorded "Bless" a few years ago, but I completely messed up the audio processing in there, so I thought I'd finish the medley off with it since I tried to keep it chronological (from what I remember - I know the last 3 tracks are definitely in order) I changed the mic placement! I watched Nahre Sol's video about how to mic a grand piano and tried a few of the placements she showed (I'm a big fan of her channel, if you are a pianist and somehow haven't seen it yet I highly recommend). How's the sound? Vector to the Heavens / Musique pour la Tristesse de Xion - Kingdom Hearts [Piano Collections] Caliko 2020-06-20 | Definitely my favorite piece from the Kingdom Hearts Piano Collections and my single favorite composition from Yoko Shimomura - I started learning it around 2014 and kept playing it on and off since then. I actually already recorded this once on this channel about 3 years ago or so, but I still didn't have proper mics back then and I really wasn't all that comfortable with playing the piece yet. Time - Inception (Hans Zimmer) 2020 // Piano Caliko 2020-06-05 | The last time I recorded a piano cover of this piece was a bit over a year ago - that was already my third take on "Time" on this channel.I've never stopped playing it though, and it kept being my go-to song whenever someone asked me to play something. Mora the Spider - Ori and the Will of the Wisps OST // Piano Cover Caliko 2020-05-25 | This is going at the top of my "Most Challenging Uploads" playlistThere are a few stumbles here and there but honestly, I'm still very happy with how this take turned out, it's such a difficult piece! Quick scales, left-hand/right-hand jumps, so many repeated notes and not much time to rest - but playing it through is definitely worth it, it's incredibly rewarding (and spine chilling sometimes!) I extensively tested my piano before attempting to record this track to make sure the mechanism will be fine - and it all went smoothly!
