Sci Fi London 2019 - The Final Land Q&A with Marcel Barion
updated
The Great Glitch
Summer in Copenhagen. Best friends Ronja and Serb are restless souls in their mid-twenties struggling to navigate life. As one joins a secret activist network, and the other falls in love with a mysterious girl, a series of increasingly unlikely events unfold, and the line between reality and fiction begins to erode. Timelines diverge and doppelgängers appear out of nowhere in an endless array of bright summer nights, where everyone is equally chasing euphoria and trying to find meaning.
“The Great Glitch / Children of Paradise” is an otherworldly film about the time in life when strangers turn into friends, friends into lovers, and lovers mysteriously disappear in the middle of the night.
Stars: Joos Støvelbæk, Lukas Gregory, Leonora Saabye
Dir: Søren Peter Langkjær Bojsen. Country: Denmark. Year: 2023. Runtime: 96 mins. Language: Danish (English subtitles)

Well, it might just be The Bystanders, screwing with your life because they are bored. Bystanders are invisible immortals supposed to act like guardian angels. Each Bystander is tasked with watching a human, but they have been recruited from the human world and are mostly bitter people with no friends; a bunch of misfits and loners.
Into this comes new recruit Pete. He is being shown the ropes by his world-weary tutor Frank, who is mostly irritated by their subjects, and for fun suggests they swap their charges.
This is a superb sci-fi satire of modern life. Imagine THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU as an Ealing comedy.
Stars: Seann Walsh, Scott Haran, Georgia Mabel Clarke.

The team that made it were given a unique Film Title, a Line of Dialogue, a Prop list, and a SciFi/Scientific idea. They then have 48hour to make their film, which must be 3 - 5mins long.

CARDBOARD!!! This was fun, awful and fun... the worst interpretation of what sci0fi should be. In the 40s and 50s it was the look and feel. Enjoy it, we did.

This film has been given a special mention - now, that doesn't mean it is good or bad, but had 'something'. In this instance, ambition, terrible dialogue, cheesy performances.. and it made us laugh, Well done folks, you made a film!

Dir. Agata Alexander, USA, 88mins, English, UK PREMIERE.
Doomsday is coming. But from where? Global warming, the isolation and breakdown of society, because the immortals hate us mortals. Maybe from the asteroids charging toward the planet?
Dark, witty and spectacular, with a stellar cast, WARNING is a visually arresting, thought-provoking sci-fi exploring the meaning of life through multiple interconnected lives.
This is like BLACK MIRROR just jumped out of a plane without a parachute!
Cast: Annabelle Wallis, Thomas Jane, Alex Pettyfer, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Alice Eve, Rupert Everett
Dir. Ryan Stuit, USA, 91mins, English, UK PREMIERE.
Gerard K. O'Neill is a physicist and space colony pioneer. In 1977, O'Neill wrote The High Frontier: Human Colonies in Space. This book sparked an enormous grassroots movement to "open the high frontier" to make space available and beneficial for all mankind.
The film is told through "Gerry's Kids", as they affectionately call themselves; his peers, family, and the younger generation who followed that movement and are now in charge of the modern-day space industry.
Dir. Aldo Salvini, Peru, 80mins, Spanish (English subtitles), WORLD PREMIERE.
M is alone, almost invisible to society, not an outcast, just old, poor, homeless and ignored. Her only friend is a lone ant. M's world is full of nostalgic memories and a dark presence that haunts her. Then one day, a "mechanical angel" arrives to help change her life.
At its core, this is a film about marginalisation and the abandonment and mental anguish that homeless people suffer. However, it is also an extraordinary warm film with an outstanding lead performance.
We are delighted to present the World Premiere of MOON HEART.
Cast: Haydeé Cáceres
Dir. Kentucker Audley and Albert Birney, USA, 91mins, English, UK PREMIERE.
Maybe tomorrow, an all-seeing surveillance state will start to invade our innermost thoughts and dreams. And, of course, we'll be subject to "dream audits" to collect taxes on our unconscious lives.
So, one day, mild-mannered government agent James Preble travels to a remote farmhouse to audit the dreams of Bella Isadora, an eccentric artist. But Bella's vast dream archive hides a secret that offers him a chance at love — and maybe a way out of his dull life.
This is a gorgeous production that draws on almost every filmmaking style and technique. It's like someone gave Gaspar Noé some happy pills.
A feast for the eyes and seasoning for the brain. You will be dreaming about this for a long time.
Cast: Kentucker Audley, Albert Birney, Penny Fuller
Dir. Mutsumi Kameyama, Japam, 83mins, Japanese (English subtitles), UK PREMIERE.
Something has changed in a world where 'personal care robots' are commonplace and cater to our every need.
Kyoka, who lives in Tokyo and has a successful career, decided to get a personal care humanoid (PCH) Kai. He is perfect. He learns quickly and knows Kyoka so well. However, Kai seems to have real emotions, and Kyoka is lost in this new relationship. Her friends are worried for her, but soon they will all have to confront an unexpected change in the world.
A refreshing indie from Japan that is a welcome addition to the robot story canon.
Cast: Ayaka Nakagouchi, Kosei Kudo
UK PREMIERE AT SCI-FI-LONDON 21.
Dir. Denver Jackson, Canada, 102mins, English, UK PREMIERE.
Esluna is ruled by descendants of a sacred bloodline, and their technology is powered by the highly advanced relics of their ancients.
Raised by the monks who protect the relics of the old world, MAEVE is a treasure hunter who uses her skills to find other artefacts for the leaders.
When her mentor, CAZ, is kidnapped by a militia group run by a rogue monk, Maeve learns of a powerful relic called the 'CROWN OF BABYLON', rumoured to have the power to bring back the dead. She teams up with BATAAR, a young man who mysteriously came to Esluna from another world years ago and worked with Caz to find the crown at the time of her abduction. Now, they must find the crown, save Caz, and stop the rogue from endangering the lives of everyone they know.
A thrilling animated action-adventure set in the retro-futuristic world of Esluna, and great fun for all the family!
Dir. Richard Miller, UK, 95mins, English, WORLD PREMIERE.
Where do we go when we die? Professor Ryan Moore believes that his new device communicates with those who have 'passed'. He is obsessed with the project because his daughter, Samantha, has been missing without a trace for months, and he fears the worst.
In one experiment, it appears he has made contact with Samantha. His grief is awful, but he thinks he has found a way to 'bring her back'. But will the truth of what happened be even more devastating.
We are excited to screen the world premiere of this British sci-fi thriller that will keep you guessing to the end.
Cast: Charlotte Ritchie, Nina Wadia, Tom England
Dir. Tan Bee Thiam, Singapore, 88mins, Chinese, English, Malay, Tamil, (English subtitles), UK PREMIERE.
Ah Bee life is s a dull, monotonous one and seems stuck in a rut. Then, one day, the opportunity arises to work at the new Tiong Bahru Social Club, a data-driven project to create the happiest neighbourhood in the world. His encounters with the neighbourhood's residents and the authority that runs the place reveal the absurdity of life.
This candy-coloured satire flirts with Art Deco nostalgia set in Singapore's most 'gentrified' district. With a sprinkle of The Truman Show and a dash of Black Mirror, though much less pretentious, this is an incisive subtle film, with humour as offbeat as it is caustic. Never has a futuristic dystopia has been so heartwarming.
There is no path to happiness. Happiness is the path.
Lao-Tze
Cast: Thomas Pang, Goh Guat Kian, Jo Tan
