It was always my favorite place to work. [...] My crew and I were working inside of the Reactor No. 1 turbine building, a huge rectangular-shaped building similar in size to an international airport hangar.
This powerful earthquake causes these massive upheavals of the earth, and then these dropping sensations. It was taking this entire structure we were in with it. It was very violent and it was just starting [...] the concrete floor and walls around us began to crack and sections of duct work were coming down and the lights were dropping everywhere [...] this huge structure getting the living hell shook out of it. [...] We were standing just yards in front of this massive turbine and generator which was spinning at 1500 RPMs being driven by this steam coming right off reactor 1, right off the reactor. You don't want a reactor... it was at 100% power and the sounds that began to come out of this turbine catch my attention and I start to realize it sounds like it wants to come apart and it's going to explode.
As if to galvanize and confirm my fears I hear my American coworker from afar in complete darkness 'It's going to blow, it's going to blow.' I recognized the terror in his voice. [...] I went to a psalm, 23:4 ... "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow death I feel no evil." I couldn't get through it and I broke down in the middle somewhere and surrendered and asked, "Just please, just make this quick." So we rode it out into the darkness. We were frozen there. We could feel it, we could hear it, we could smell it, we could even taste it, we just couldn't see it.

Carl Pillitteri spent the last 30 years servicing electrical generating stations around the world. He now owns Penghu County Wind Energy Company, installing residential-sized wind turbines in an archipelago off the western coast of Taiwan, where he lives now with his wife and two children.

Infected chickens being disposed of

Officials in Kumamoto, southwestern Japan, have detected the H5 strain of the bird flu virus in dead chickens at a poultry farm in the prefecture.

The prefectural government has banned the movement or shipments of chickens and eggs from farms within a 10-kilometer radius.

Officials say about 1,100 of the 56,000 chickens at a farm in Taragi Town had died by Sunday morning.

Genetic analysis confirmed the H5 strain in 2 of the 10 tested birds.

The prefectural government has begun disposing of about 112,000 chickens at the farm and another farm in Sagara Village with the same owner.
The prefectural government sent 400 officials to complete the disposal by Monday morning and bury the birds on the farms.

To prevent the spread of the virus, the prefecture has banned the movement of birds and eggs from poultry farms within a 3-kilometer radius, and shipments of birds and eggs from farms within a 10-kilometer radius.

The prefecture is also setting up sterilization points at 10 locations around the area to disinfect the tires of passing vehicles.

Meanwhile, neighboring Kagoshima Prefecture summoned poultry producers to an emergency meeting, and called on them to thoroughly sterilize their farms.
Officials are urging about 1,000 poultry producers in the prefecture to thoroughly sterilize farms with 100 or more chickens.

In Fukushima, all farm produce must be checked for the cesium level prior to shipping. The current government limit is 100 Bq. The farmers know how many Bq of cesium their produce contains. We can ship it if the reading is lower than 100. BUT I WOULD NOT DARE EAT IT MYSELF. The consumers assume there is no radiation in the food they buy. What do you say about this? ... We feel guilty about growing it and selling it. We won't eat it ourselves but we sell it.

The radiation readings in Tamano are almost as high as in Iitate. In the woods, you find spots with 7 to 10 micro Sv/hr everywhere. The decontamination is being done in limited areas. But there are so many cases when the areas outside the crop fields are not measured ...

Would you feed your children food with less than 100 Bq? How about 50 Bq? Simple measuring equipment would not detect cesium less than 10 Bq. ... The equipment that can measure all of alpha, beta and gamma rays is too expensive. Usually only gamma rays are measured, therefore only cesium. Do you think that consumers really believe ND (not detected) and put the food in their mouth? No, they won't eat it. I do know that for a fact.

Dana wanted a DEBATE with nuclear scientists. He made a video asking (actually demanding) that Dr. Chris Busby talk about Spent Fuel removal in SF#4 at Fukushima Daiichi. I helped Dana out by mirroring Dana's video where Dana taunts Chris Busby for a reply to Dana's accusation that Dr. Busby was a coward.

CHRIS BUSBY COMMENTED: Dr Busby remarks that Mr Durnford is mistaken. They have built a concrete slab and given it wheels and placed the red crane on top of it; in the picture that red crane is engaged in removing material from the wrecked pool. The top of the pool is below the level of the concrete surface that you can see, and has not disappeared. The top of the reactor (yellow dome) is visible. The pool cannot be higher than the dome as if it were they could not pick out the fuel rods and shif them to the pool using the green crane. That would be my interpretation of the picture he shows. You all should know that Busby is not afraid of anything except making stupid deductions from insufficient data.

Cooling stopped at reactor three at Fukushima Daini but later resumed according to TEPCO but temp in spent fuel pools rising. Also of issue was cooling interruption (temporary loss of cooling) at Fukushima Daiichi in Spent Fuel Pool on top of Reactor three.

Tsunami warning issued off Fukushima
The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for the coast of Fukushima Prefecture.
The agency said a tsunami up to 3 meters (approx 10 feet) was imminent.
The magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit Fukushima around 6 AM Japan Time on Tuesday. The intensity of the quake measured 5 minus according to the Japanese seismic scale of 0 to 7.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says it will study whether an appropriate response was made when a cooling system at the Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant stopped briefly after Tuesday's earthquake.

The system that cools the spent nuclear fuel pool at the No.3 reactor went down about 10 minutes after a strong quake struck off Fukushima Prefecture in the morning.

TEPCO didn't inform all the news media of the incident until nearly 2 hours later. Utility officials said the powerful quake and tsunami warning may have caused confusion. They said they will work to ensure that they are able to take appropriate and swift actions in times of emergency.

The officials said it restarted the cooling system about one hour and 40 minutes later, and that no abnormalities have been detected.

They said they believe the pumps stopped after the agitated water in the pool activated an alert system.

TEPCO resumes treatment of contaminated water
Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, says treatment of contaminated water resumed at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on Tuesday afternoon.

TEPCO instructed the plant's workers to evacuate to higher ground when a tsunami warning was issued after a strong earthquake off Fukushima Prefecture on Tuesday morning.

The workers were engaged in operations for treating contaminated water, building storage tanks and decontaminating reactor buildings.

TEPCO officials said the plant's safety was confirmed after the tsunami warning was lifted. They said the plant's facilities were not damaged, and that contaminated water did not leak.

Dr Busby remarks that Mr Durnford is mistaken. They have built a concrete slab and given it wheels and placed the red crane on top of it; in the picture that red crane is engaged in removing material from the wrecked pool. The top of the pool is below the level of the concrete surface that you can see, and has not disappeared. The top of the reactor (yellow dome) is visible. The pool cannot be higher than the dome as if it were they could not pick out the fuel rods and shif them to the pool using the green crane. That would be my interpretation of the picture he shows. You all should know that Busby is not afraid of anything except making stupid deductions from insufficient data.

I,ll make a video showing the dome is not suppose to be on the lower side of the building under any circumstances ever . The dome is suppose to be at the top center where the reactor use to be . The fuel pools that people are worried about are at the top part of the building not the lower part , those are the transfer storage pools they use after 10 years of storing them at the top part of the building . The hole in the deck your talking above is the hole in every building they use cranes to lower the enormously heavy dry cask down to ground level from the TOP after 10 years of wet storage to be transferred to the comment spent storage pool on the ground . Don,t talk to me again you are overly a pro nuke idiot .

That being said, I will no longer be mirroring Dana's videos for him - as it appears he no longer wishes help from me. All I did was copy paste Dr. Busby's reply to Dana.. They deleted the full article was only able to catch the beginning. The spent fuel pool at unit 1 is GONE! TEPCO four days, out of the wall panel 18 sheets that make up the cover to cover the first nuclear power plant Unit 1 reactor building in Fukushima, finished the removal of the 16 th. In the framework over the cover, the whole picture of the building, which was badly damaged in a hydrogen explosion has become uncovered again. The two panels that remain to removal even during the next week, the end of the dismantling of the building cover, which began in July last year. James Hansen uses propaganda tricks perfected by Nazi Propaganda Minister Josef Goebbles to try to convince the world that anti-nuclear is bad and nuclear is **clean** **green** **sustainable**… and also that his own fecal matter is not odoriferous. I was in the nuclear industry and built nuclear power plants in the 70’s and the 80’s, and I can assure you that when those plants were built, they had absolutely nothing to do with carbon dioxide and global warming.
The bottom line here is that 35 years in the future, that this nuclear plants that are proposed are only going to mitigate carbon dioxide by about 6 percent. And what I’d like you to do today – I’m going to ignore for the purposes of this presentation the desecration of native lands from mining, the desecration of Fukushima Prefecture and other areas that might be destroyed from nuclear disasters; and also, of course, the long-term storage for a million years of the nuclear waste. So let’s just set all of those liabilities aside and talk about money.
And what I’d like to do for the first half of this presentation is focus on the impact that the nukes that are running right now are having on the environment.
438 plants that the nuclear industry will tell you are critically needed, and if we shut them down, we’re going to melt the arctic ice – are only contributing 3 percent.
So each power plant reduces the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by 7/1000’s of 1 percent. (...)

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Sept. 21 it will check for radiation contamination in seawater near its crippled Fukushima nuclear plant after heavy rain from Typhoon No. 16 brought tainted groundwater to the surface.

The water reached the top of wells at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, and there is a possibility that some of it spilled into the sea.

The official added that the company believes most of the water that may have poured into the sea was rainwater that had not seeped into the ground.

TEPCO said groundwater in wells on the seaside area of the nuclear complex reached the surface around 10 p.m. on Sept. 20 amid the heavy rain brought by the approaching typhoon. The water kept rising despite workers’ efforts to lower the level using makeshift pumps and septic tank trucks.

The groundwater level remained the same as of 7 a.m. on Sept. 21 before it finally dropped to about 3 centimeters from the surface two hours later.

According to TEPCO, about 575 millimeters of rain fell in the area of the nuclear plant from Aug. 1 to Sept. 20.

Utility owner Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) announced in June 2016 that it would shut down the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant with its two atomic reactors by 2025 due to a joint proposal made by PG&E and several environmental and labor organizations. This action is neither the beginning nor the end to the decades long story of Diablo Canyon’s design, construction, and operation. PG&E’s promise to replace the nuclear power generated by Diablo Canyon’s two reactors with renewable energy and to no longer seek a 20-year license renewal for these atomic reactors still comes with significant costs. The two are reactors located on multiple California fault lines and now will continue to operate for nearly a decade more. In the second part to this Fairewinds Energy Education Podcast series, the Fairewinds Crew will share the troubled history of Diablo Canyon and speak with the leading activists in opposition to Diablo Canyon’s ominous 50-year presence along the California coast.
The formidable San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace have acted as legal intervenors to the construction, licensing, and operation of Diablo Canyon since 1973. AG: (30:40) I don’t’ know if you knew it, but I did a report for Friends of the Earth that showed that they were supposed to inspect the nuclear reactor vessel in 2014 for its 10-year inspection and they got the NRC to waive that and push it out into 2025 so that there you have one of the most severely embrittled reactor vessels in the world and the NRC has waived any inspection on it until after it gets its 20-year license extension. So that’s certainly a risk to the people of San Luis Obispo. For the next 10 years, you’ve got an uninspected nuclear reactor out there.

LS: I didn’t know that, Arnie.

AG: Certainly Diablo and the NRC weren’t interested in publicizing it and they tried to sneak it through, and effectively, they did. The license has been amended and there is no inspection between now and 2025.

LS: And there’s probably no way to address that now, because it’s done, right?

MG: Shouldn’t they have been notified?

AG: That’s right. There should have been a process back when they applied for that, but somewhere along the line, the vessel is not being inspected. The NRC gave them a 10-year waiver.

MG: Linda, thank you so much for joining us today and for being a part of this really critical conversation about nuclear power risk, atomic reactors, the West Coast earthquake faults and Diablo Canyon.

LS: Maggie, I appreciate so much your having invited me. I hope that people will pay attention to Diablo Canyon and will pay attention to all of the nuclear reactors that are still online and work as hard as they can to shut them all down.

A declassified report written by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on March 18, 2011 – one week after the tidal wave hit Fukushima – states:

The source term provided to NARAC was: (1) 25% of the total fuel in unit 2 released to the atmosphere, (2) 50% of the total spent fuel from unit 3 was released to the atmosphere, and (3) 100% of the total spent fuel was released to the atmosphere from unit 4.

A sharp increase in radiation levels was detected in one of the underground tunnels at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, according to media reports. According to a press release issued by TEPCO, Fukushima plant’s operator, the water samples retrieved from the tunnels on December 3rd contained 482,000 becquerels per liter of radioactive cesium and about 500,000 of beta-ray-emitting substance becquerels per liter of a beta-ray-emitting substance, which is about 4,000-4,100 times higher compared to the samples taken a year ago

This Week’s EXCLUSIVE Interviews begin approx 8:00 into video:
Nuclear Hotseat Producer/Host Libbe HaLevy attended the US 9th District Court Hearing on USS Reagan Sailors v. Tokyo Electric Power Company. The sailors were on an humanitarian aid mission to Japan following the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, which caused the Fukushima Daiichi triple meltdowns. TEPCO never informed the US Navy of the dangerous release of radioactivity from the crippled nuclear reactors and as a result, the sailors were exposed to catastrophic levels of radiation.

At stake is whether the sailors’ case will be allowed to be tried in United States courts. TEPCO wants this case tried in Japan, which would effectively make it impossible for our sailors – many of whom are in failing health and would have to interrupt their medical treatments, fly to Japan, and fly out their own experts. The trip would be cost-prohibitive and forcing the trial to take place there would effectively end the lawsuit. That’s what TEPCO and its attorneys are counting on.

It produces less radioactive waste and more power but it remains unproven on a commercial scale. 'Even if thorium technology does progress to the point where it might be commercially viable, it will face the same problems as conventional nuclear: it is not renewable or sustainable and cannot effectively connect to smart grids. The technology is not tried and tested, and none of the main players is interested. Thorium reactors are no more than a distraction.

Did you know every thorium reactor would require a reprocessing center? Also #Thorium Reactor would be enriching bomb grade material and present a bigger proliferation problem. Also problems getting heat sink from the intense heat that is generated and you have to worry about capturing all the deadly isotopes that are created. Have not worked out the kinks of sodium circuit boards frying.

Without exception, [thorium reactors] have never been commercially viable, nor do any of the intended new designs even remotely seem to be viable. Like all nuclear power production they rely on extensive taxpayer subsidies; the only difference is that with thorium and other breeder reactors these are of an order of magnitude greater, which is why no government has ever continued their funding.'

All other issues aside, thorium is still nuclear energy, say environmentalists, its reactors disgorging the same toxic byproducts and fissile waste with the same millennial half-lives. Oliver Tickell, author of Kyoto2, says the fission materials produced from thorium are of a different spectrum to those from uranium-235, but 'include many dangerous-to-health alpha and beta emitters'.

Tickell says thorium reactors would not reduce the volume of waste from uranium reactors. 'It will create a whole new volume of radioactive waste from previously radio-inert thorium, on top of the waste from uranium reactors. Looked at in these terms, it's a way of multiplying the volume of radioactive waste humanity can create several times over.'

Thorium cannot in itself power a reactor; unlike natural uranium, it does not contain enough fissile material to initiate a nuclear chain reaction. As a result it must first be bombarded with neutrons to produce the highly radioactive isotope uranium-233 – 'so these are really U-233 reactors,' says Karamoskos.

This isotope is more hazardous than the U-235 used in conventional reactors, he adds, because it produces U-232 as a side effect (half life: 160,000 years), on top of familiar fission by-products such as technetium-99 (half life: up to 300,000 years) and iodine-129 (half life: 15.7 million years).Add in actinides such as protactinium-231 (half life: 33,000 years) and it soon becomes apparent that thorium's superficial cleanliness will still depend on digging some pretty deep holes to bury the highly radioactive waste. http://tinyurl.com/zk8jt3a

TOKYO — The frozen soil wall built around the crippled Fukushima No.1 nuclear plant have melted in two places following recent powerful typhoons, local media reported Friday, raising concerns over effect of the approach adopted by the Tokyo Electric Power Co.(TEPCO) to reduce the massive volume of radioactive water.

The 1.5-km-long frozen soil wall, also known as the “ice wall,” which was partly put into use in March, melted in two places following Powerful Lionrock, the tenth of the season, battered the region, with temperature of the melting parts rising above zero centigrade, Japan’s Asahi Shimbun reported.

The melting was probably caused by lashing of large amount of groundwater as a result of recent powerful typhoons and heavy rainfall, said local reports.

Groundwater flowing under the nuclear plant is leaking through the melted parts of the wall to outside and TEPCO is trying to refreeze the parts by injecting special chemicals to the wall, said the reports.

The ice wall construction was finished in February after two years of work involving driving more than 1,500 steel pipes with 30 meters into the soil around the perimeter surrounding the No. 1 to 4 reactors at the troubled plant.

Liquid calcium chloride at minus 40 degrees Celsius was then pumped into the pipes to freeze the surrounding soil, which, in theory, would prevent groundwater from flowing into the facilities and getting contaminated when it comes into contact with melted nuclear fuel.

However, reports showed that there still remained unfrozen parts as of mid-August, and TEPCO revealed plans to take additional steps such as injecting cement into the parts of the wall that are not fully frozen.

The ice wall, costing tax payers some 35 billion yen (USD336 million), met with doubts and criticisms from experts from the very beginning, with the technique having been used previously in engineering projects, but not on a scale of the Fukushima plant or for the expected duration.

Some experts believe that capping the reactors in concrete, as was the case following the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, would be a more effective means of dealing with the ongoing crisis.

The project was considered failed by some outside experts at an earlier meeting called by the Nuclear Regulation Authority to assess the effectiveness of the approach.

Rainfall from recent typhoons caused partial melting of the “ice wall” at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, allowing highly radioactive water to leak from around the damaged reactor buildings, the plant’s operator said Sept. 1.

The groundwater level near a seaside impermeable wall temporarily rose to 28 centimeters below the ground surface when Typhoon No. 10 passed the area on Aug. 30.

Before the typhoon hit, the water level was 35 cm below the surface.

Around 5.5 cm of rainfall a day fell in the area when the typhoon hit.

The groundwater level, however, actually rose by 7 cm, although 740 tons of groundwater was pumped out of the section.

“If there had been an additional 15 cm of rain, (the contaminated water) could have poured out over the ground surface” and spilled into the sea, a TEPCO official said Sept. 1.

The Meteorological Agency’s initial forecast said Typhoon No. 10 would bring a maximum 20 cm of rain a day at some locations in the Tohoku region.

The 34.5-billion-yen ($335 million) frozen wall was completed in spring to prevent groundwater from entering the reactor buildings and mixing with highly radioactive water.

TEPCO admitted the underground wall of frozen dirt is not working.

The company said the temperatures at the two sections of the frozen wall have climbed above zero since Typhoon No. 7 approached Fukushima Prefecture on Aug. 17.

The company believes that the partial melting was caused by the influx of water brought by the typhoons and heavy rain in between.

Workers at the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant have suspended some of the decommissioning work and are bracing for rain and winds from a powerful typhoon.

Typhoon Lionrock is expected to make landfall along Japan's northeastern coast on Tuesday afternoon, passing off Fukushima Prefecture.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says workers secured electric cables and hoses on the plant compound on Monday.

On Tuesday, the operator suspended work at the plant's port. It also stopped the operation of a crane being used to demolish a temporary cover over one of the reactor buildings. Officials say they are closely watching to make sure the cover is not blown off by the typhoon.

TEPCO says it has also taken measures to prevent contaminated rain water and groundwater from leaking into the ocean.

In past typhoons, it was thought that contaminated rainwater flowed into the ocean through a drainage system. There were also concerns that radioactive groundwater might leak into the ocean as rain could increase the groundwater in the compound.

This time the operator has installed stronger pumps and increased their number.

The utility says as of 11 AM Tuesday, there were no changes in groundwater levels at the plant's site.

Other measures taken earlier include rerouting the drainage system into the plant's port instead of directly into the ocean. TEPCO also raised the barriers around tanks that store tainted water.

Storm Slams Northern Japan
People in northern Japan are dealing with the aftereffects of a powerful storm.
Tropical storm Lionrock ripped through the region devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Lionrock is moving northwest at a speed of 75 kilometers per hour... packing winds of more than 100 kilometers per hour.

The storm was the first typhoon to strike the Pacific side of Tohoku in recorded history.

Forecasters had downgraded Lionrock to a severe tropical storm because its maximum wind speed dropped somewhat after making landfall.

Its center has passed the main island but severe weather remains over a wide area.

People in Tohoku and northern island of Hokkaido are dealing with heavy rains, strong winds and rough seas.

Officials also issued mudslide warnings.

They say many parts of the area had one month's worth of rainfall in just 2 days.
