POTA FAIL: With Special Guest Natalie W4TEA KL7EC outdoors 2025-09-29 | POTA Boat Fail on Rocky Lake, Alaska | Featuring Natalie W4TEA 🎣📡🚤Natalie and I set out across Rocky Lake in Alaska for a Parks on the Air activation—her very first POTA! Freshly stationed in Alaska, Natalie was ready for an adventure both on the water and on the air.🎣 First stop: fishing! I rigged up her pole with a mini cowbell, and it didn’t take long before she landed her very first rainbow trout.📡 Next stop: radio setup. We anchored the boat and put up the Chameleon antenna… only to find the SWR reading 8.2! 😱 Not wanting to troubleshoot on the water, we moved ashore to continue the activation. Turns out, nothing was wrong with the antenna—it was just a bad SWR meter.Propagation wasn’t on our side either, and we only managed two contacts. All Hell Breaks Loose: What Antenna? Ham Radio Alaska KL7EC outdoors 2023-10-23 | After a discussion with a good friend of mine. It got me thinking of, if all hell broke loose in Alaska wether it be a earthquake, tsunami, volcano or war. What antenna would I most likely grab. After evaluating everything and all the antennas I have, the winner was shocking even to me.This antenna would be for making out of state contacts if needed or to pass traffic. All local contacts would be made using uhf vhf but HF contacts would be on a antenna that would handle the brutality of the situation. Easy to repair if needed and stealthy if I would need so. The obvious band winner is 20 meters as it’s most reliable in Alaska for out of state contacts.The winner was a home brew 1/2 wave dipole that I would use as a vertical dipole, horizontal dipole, sloper or inverted v.What antenna would you grab?
