first mothers day since leaving abusive mother Rikki Poynter 2024-05-13 | Growing up with physical, emotional, verbal, and mental abuse by my mother for 30 years, I never was a fan of Mother’s Day. I’d get jealous seeing everyone happily with their mothers, posting happy pictures. Etc. (Granted, of course, I know anything can happen behind closed doors and that pictures aren’t always what they seem.) I hated how it seemed like I had to pretend everything was okay especially on Mother’s Day and play into this role both online and offline. I hated knowing that there’s always people that will think I’m a terrible person because “well, it’s your mother!” even though I think that excuse is ridiculous. I hated knowing that I would never get that happy relationship with my mother, and I would always be awkward around other people’s mothers. (Not rude, just awkward.)This is my first Mother’s Day being on my own without all of that. In recent years, I never said Happy Mother’s Day. And today, I look at my phone and think, “Do I want to do that now? She’s been doing this strong attempt at being in my good graces since we no longer see each other and there’s a text every once in a while in case some information is needed, but other than that…” I mean, I know I don’t want to send anything. It wouldn’t be genuine if I did. But as it turns out, the guilt in the back of your mind doesn’t simply go away so easily! (well, maybe it does for some. But apparently not for me.) And unfortunately, I still get sad seeing the happy posts that are all on Facebook, Instagram, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy for them. A little bitter and jealous, sure, I’ll admit to that. Hey, does anybody wanna be my mother today? Having the free version of Spotify comes with a lot of limits but now to add a limit on lyrics to that? That is a ridiculous move on their part. Lyrics are an accessibility tool for everyone: deaf and hard of hearing people, people with ADHD, auditory processing disorder, even non-disabled people. There is no good reason to have them be paid for. I also really wanted a chicken salad sandwich and they were running those on a lunch sack special. Good coffee, good sandwich. The Struggle of Getting Interpreters at the Doctors Office (But It Worked Out Well This Time!) Rikki Poynter 2024-04-28 | When I first walked into the room, I was surprised to find an interpreter. Now, I can’t remember if I requested one personally when I made the appointment or if they decided to bring in VRI (video relay interpreting) because they knew I’m deaf and it would’ve been easier to bring it in since I had some struggles understanding the doctor last time as she’s pretty soft spoken. Either way, it was nice to see even though, yes, an in person interpreter is usually preferred. But the guy wasn’t bad! It’s just easier for me to focus on and understand interpreters in person. Don’t worry, I’m fine. (I mean, if you ignore my stress and mental health, haha.) I wanted to make sure a bruised muscle I have been dealing with for a month wasn’t doing too bad. It’s healing, but very slowly. Buck, or anyone for that matter, having their first encounter with a gender they have never had a romantic/sexual encounter with before does not mean they are suddenly only attracted to that gender. My bisexual self has never been on a date with a woman, but that doesn’t mean I’m a lesbian because I have a date or a relationship with a woman now when I’ve only had dating experiences with men. It’s LGBT, not LGT. when having chronic pain puts a pause on your life Rikki Poynter 2024-04-04 | It has not been a great two weeks for me, both emotionally and physically. Emotionally, things are looking up. Physically, I think a lot of it is from what went wrong emotionally so that’s been heavy. Plus my usual chronic pain woes. But now I’m also stressed about upgrading to a one bedroom apartment, finding jobs, finding more business, etc. I’m up and running a little bit more now. My neck still hurts a little bit and is still going through a pulled muscle, but I’m able to move around a little bit more. Admitting I have a problem Rikki Poynter 2024-04-01 | Having a drink or two when I’m content, happy? At a dinner? With a friend? Good. Having a drink when I’m going through a mental health spiral and usually at a bar? Not so good because it doesn’t turn into one. Sunday night was an experience I’m not really fond of, although I don’t know if it was all myself because I was socializing with someone I had just met at the bar that night, but still… I’ll speak more on this later. trying to get back into a routine after depression Rikki Poynter 2024-03-19 | Been overwhelmed by the stress of trying to find consistent work as I aim to move into an actual one bedroom apartment in July. Been overwhelmed by how messy my space is and shut down when trying to do something about it. Add in depression, pain, and fatigue flares which contribute to the mess and it’s… something. Fighting for Reproductive Rights at Lincoln Women’s March in Lincoln, Nebraska Rikki Poynter 2024-03-18 | On Saturday, I went to the Lincoln Women’s March. If there’s one thing I’ve been wanting to do since moving to Omaha, it’s getting more involved with the community and politics here. As a woman, the battle against reproductive rights is incredibly important to me. As a deaf woman, having accessibility at events for people whose rights are being spit on is also important to me. And as you can see from the video, there were no ASL interpreters. She knew I was mainstreamed, speaking English as my first language. I told her this before the appointment actually started. So, naturally, when I have my hearing aids in, I end up looking at the audiologist a lot but I’m still using the interpreter. Although, my audiologist is like (gestures in front of me) here and the interpreter is (gestures away from me) over there. So I’m ha- having to look like this (moves head back and forth). So, anyway, at one point, the audiologist is gonna go out onto the phone and she looks over and she’s like, “Do you still… do you still need me?” And I was, you know, explaining to her like, you know English is my first language. Is Apple causing a hearing aid & Bluetooth issue since the last iOS update? Rikki Poynter 2024-02-12 | For once, my hearing aid issues are not because of moisture. Now, we cannot *confirm* that it is an iOS issue as I have seen from one Pixel user that they've been having an issue as well, but we have a theory, at least. Bluetooth issue. I just had a meeting with somebody about something completely irrelevant to this. But my audio got cut out for them and also, they were cut out for me. So I brought that up and they said, do you have an iphone? And I said yes. And they said, ever since the last iPhone update, we’ve had customers complaining that the Bluetooth keeps disconnecting from their hearing aids ever since the last update. Now I keep having problems with my hearing aids, but these last two weeks specifically?
