My first collaboration video! Many thanks to multi-instrumentalist Soundole for contributing a beautiful clarinet lead to this tune. Find his channel here (youtube.com/channel/UCi4hnwHh4xqpyDV5098nmCQ) or see a subscribe link at the end.
I learned while researching this tune that it has entered the Japanese public music curriculum, which is just one of many pieces of evidence of its craft and staying power as a composition. My arrangement borrows the intro bit from the extraordinary Celtic Moon arrangement, but otherwise stays pretty close to the OST version. Enjoy!

Two Hornpipes - one by Jimmy Keane, the other I don’t know the origin of, but some great recordings exist out there.
This is the first video I’m recording with my new-to-me Scandalli 34 key. It’s been fun getting to learn it - I suspect it will want some releathering at some point but it plays nicely.Mats Edén - BirgittapolskanAdam Matlock2023-05-09 | An original composition by the Swedish fiddler Mats Edén (@MatsEden ) from his 2020 album Alvaleken. His version is done on, I believe, a baroque tuned fiddle so I chose to slide it up to C. I hope I have done it some justice, or at least not ruined it for future generations.A Musical Message from Winnett Food ForestAdam Matlock2023-05-03 | thegreatgive.org/organizations/winnett-food-forest-incJigs: Christy Barry’s No. 1/The Humours of EnnistymonAdam Matlock2023-04-19 | Progress post. It’s been fun and challenging, and has caused me to revisit some of the folk traditions I’ve been acquainted with for a longer time, and think about what I’ve learned from them. Thanks to @AndersLillebomusic for his great resource on Irish Ornaments for piano accordion, as well as his great project @thefolkmusicpodcast8188 which has been really great to catch up on in the last few weeks as well.Reels: The Humours of Toomagh/Kitty’s Gone A’MilkingAdam Matlock2023-02-14 | Attempting to do something like an Uilleann pipe imitation with the regs in the left hand.
I’ve been working on Irish Traditional music since late December of last year, after many years of thinking that it was not a journey I would ever find myself on. It’s been tremendously enjoyable, and I’ve been chipping away at tunes and attending a local session every week, trying to build a repertoire (now hovering around the 30 tune mark). I’ll attempt to check in every so often with some progress on this front.Dio - Holy Diver (An Historic Accordion Cover)Adam Matlock2023-02-10 | ...Carly Rae Jepsen - Bad Thing Twice (An Historic Accordion Cover)Adam Matlock2023-01-31 | IDK if this was always true but I like Carly Rae now.Nahadoth - Live Infrequent Seams Festival (Day 1)Adam Matlock2021-01-07 | Dungeon Synth artist Nahadoth performing excerpts of "Shortest Day" and "Guardian Moon" for the Infrequent Seams Festival, 12/17/20Peter Hammill - The Future NowAdam Matlock2020-11-06 | Cover of the title track of Peter Hammill’s The Future Now.Kraftwerk - The Man Machine (An Historic Accordion Cover)Adam Matlock2020-05-07 | RIP Florian Schneider. Two Chorales By PachelbelAdam Matlock2020-04-09 | Two chorales by Johan Pachelbel. The Herbalists is my Dungeon Synth project where everything is recorded live in a single take, so making a transcription isn’t as difficult as with some of my more layered material. I took advantage of the free bass ability to play multiple octaves for the simple ostinato here.Frode Haltli- Hug (An Historic Accordion CoverAdam Matlock2019-11-10 | Since the release of accordionist Frode Haltli’s Avant Folk last fall, this tune has been stuck in my head, but for over ten years I’ve been listening to this fantastic accordionist and composer in various settings. It was a fun challenge to adapt the winding bass line on the stradella bass system, and then to get it comfortable enough to try and improvise over it without a train wreck. And I see Haltli has just released a new album, so maybe this time next year I’ll be covering a tune from that one.Solo Accordion playing Dungeon Synth MelodiesAdam Matlock2019-11-08 | This is me playing some synth melodies I’ve composed over the last 3-4 years on solo accordion.Boss Battle 1 from Chrono Trigger (An Historic Accordion Cover)Adam Matlock2019-09-19 | Composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. Arrangement by Adam Matlock.
This was difficult to learn on the accordion. I first tried it out almost two years ago, balked at the intro, and decided to come back to it later. Recently I’ve been doing some technical work that’s helped me to approach this song more effectively, and it’s still a beast. But I remember this tune making a huge impression on me the first time through Chrono Trigger, at how overtly it was connected to progressive rock, and how intense of a feeling it gave to the first boss fight, and I couldn’t wait to make a version of my own.Black Epheria - Gently LoweredAdam Matlock2019-08-30 | Track excerpted from upcoming split with Serpent’s Isle (http://serpentsisle.bandcamp.com)

Examples include major scales played in unison with left and right hands, simple diatonic walkups while going down the circle of fifths, a bassline from an Ethiopian Jazz standard, some left hand blues walking bass lines, and an example from the score to Lord of the Rings.

I made the backing track in GarageBand in about 10 minutes, trying to feature the fast EDM -like articulations possible on a melodica. I've worked on this cover off and on for probably a year, first to get comfortable with some of the large jumps in the left hand, then to change the style of the arrangement 3-4 times before trying this approach. It loses the melancholic qualities of the original melody but at least it has a pocket.Mystal Tree - How We Survived (2017, Dungeon Synth/original VGM)Adam Matlock2018-06-18 | "How We Survived" The final track from the self-titled debut from Mystal Tree. I was inspired by the old duo recordings of violin and piano or violin and tsimbl in working on this tune, and that I hope explains some of the romantic flourishes here.
Then I found out the tune is actually more like a Freylekhs. (Many thanks, Zilien, for the source recording!) So anyway don't try and learn from this recording. An Historic - Last Contact (Solaris)Adam Matlock2018-04-14 | An original song inspired by the novel Solaris by Stanislaw Lem. One of PH's undersung but not unappreciated 90s album, during which he worked with a steady band, the Peter Hammill Quartet, in live and studio settings. This song is one of the best of these studio songs, a breathtaking set of lyrics that is a bit sad, and a bit funny, set to a nice anthemic tune. This is a regular part of the live catalog, and it was hearing it in duet with Stuart Gordon on the Veracious album which helped to sell me on the song, and from there it was easy to venture to the less well-trodden paths in PH's discography.Peter Hammill - Constantly Overheard (An Historic Cover)Adam Matlock2018-04-13 | Peter Hammill - Constantly Overheard From Consequences
Another cover of a favorite Peter Hammill song, this one from the 2012 album Consequences. This is an increasingly relevant song that I interpret as addressing the ubiquity of the public record, especially in the internet age, and how anyone, especially public figures, can have their words taken out of context. Some lines suggest the ease in which people can miscommunicate on an interpersonal level. To that end, I've really tried not to botch the lyrics too badly! An Historic - This NestAdam Matlock2018-04-12 | A run through of a recent song.Peter Hammill - She Wraps It Up(An Historic Cover)Adam Matlock2018-04-12 | Peter Hammill - She Wraps it Up
