Back in fall 2022, I wrote down a set of beliefs about where the world was heading—trade realignment in the Western Hemisphere, shifting supply chains, and a deeper change in what the economy rewards. Now in early 2026, after nearly two years of living retail every day (and using AI tools like ChatGPT the entire time), it finally clicked: As software becomes cheaper and more abundant, the “abstract economy” loses leverage… and the reality economy—where judgment, trust, and presence matter—comes back to the center.

My bike shop isn’t “special.” It’s just a clean example of what doesn’t disappear when tools get easy. If you’re a small business owner, or you work in a hands-on industry, I’d love to hear what you’re seeing.

In this video, I break down one of the biggest shifts happening in cycling right now: the battle between direct-to-consumer brands, traditional bicycle companies, and independent bike shops.

Nike spent years pushing customers toward direct sales and away from retailers. But while Nike pulled back from specialty stores, brands like HOKA and On gained shelf space, retailer support, and customer attention.

Now Nike is rebuilding wholesale relationships.

I think the bicycle industry may be setting itself up for a very similar disruption.

At Go Grava Bicycles, I’m watching customers discover X-LAB bikes in real time. Many of them walk into the shop without knowing the brand at all. Then they compare an X-LAB road bike or gravel bike against Trek, Specialized, Giant, Cervélo and other established brands — and the combination of price, weight, components and performance changes the conversation immediately.

That’s where X-LAB gets interesting.

XDS already has massive manufacturing capability, carbon production, engineering and global scale. Instead of bypassing independent bicycle dealers, X-LAB is using bike shops as local showrooms, demo centers, service departments and customer acquisition channels.

X-LAB GT8 First Ride Review | This Bike Doesn’t Make Sense for $3,199

Grava Adventure Co. 2026-06-01 | After unboxing the X-LAB GT8, it was time to stop talking about specs and actually put this bike through its paces on my local gravel test loop in Reading, Pennsylvania.

This route includes pavement, rail trail, technical rocky climbing, fast gravel descents, and high-speed road sections—giving me a good feel for where the GT8 fits among bikes like the Specialized Crux, Trek Checkpoint, Giant Revolt, Pivot Vault, Santa Cruz Stigmata, Argon 18 Dark Matter, and more.

Cranksgiving 2025: We Closed the Shop to Haul Groceries by E-Bike (and Won 3 Awards!)
