Who In War is about someone developing a god-complex online. They begin to think that if they were in control, if they alone could decide what to do with the world, that it would be better. They begin to draw parallels between their own personal struggles and real wars that are currently being fought, and dissociate to the point of losing themselves in a fantasy. It can be easy to begin feeling this way, but there are dangers to this line of thinking. It often leads young men to violence, despair, and hatred. I wanted to explore these ideas to put them out in the open, to understand how and why this happens to people, thereby attempting to avoid such pitfalls myself.
Noah aka Polyphonic made this video, and it was an honour to have someone with his skills bring this song to life with an incredible music video! My contribution was basically just giving him the green-screen footage and occasionally sending some notes his way, but he took this concept and ran with it and I couldn't be happier with the result!

I've had the NerdSeq for over a year now and I absolutely love it! A band I'm in - Mallory Chipman & The Mystics, always does a "modular freakout" in our live shows, where I bring a new patch every show and we jam out to it. This usually features our drummer pretty heavily, but everyone joins in! This piece is a combination of sequences that were originally used in a live show for the Mystics, as well as two sequences that I came up with in a modular jam with my friend Murray Cameron Smith. I'm really happy with how it turned out! If you're curious to hear the *very* trippy modular freakout on the album, listen to track 7 "You Can't Edit An Asteroid" which flows very nicely into the final tune on the album.
Patch notes:
- NerdSeq into Doepfer Quad VCO into Quad VCA into X-Pan into Blades is the primary sound! Just got my hands on the x-pan and it is DELIGHTFUL. In the past, I've used post-processing to give patches some more exciting stereo image, but this negates the need for that!
- Akemie's Castle remains a necessary tool for me, it's sharp contrast to the analogue oscialltors of the Doepfer Quad VCO is hugely useful to distinguish voices in my compositions/patches. I've begun to ustilize NerdSeq's internal LFOs and modulation sources a bit more. Here is can be heard as vibrato on Akemie's castle. Intellijel's Noise Tools is modulating Operator 3's waveform.
- Rene MK2 is being used for subtle modulation, particularly for Atom (uElements) which is the percussive, hihat adjascent sound. You can see me changing up the pattern that Atom plays in real time with the C channel's Gates being changed with random finger swipes.
- Plonk is playing the role of a guitar here, I get jealous of people with multiple of these things, it does so many jobs so well! I tried to use is as a bit of a counter-melody in the chorus of this piece.

This past summer I was asked to do a livestream show where there wasn't any singing allowed due to Covid restrictions, so I made arrangements of some of my songs for vocoder and modular instead of singing with my band. There is a lapel microphone under the mask which allows me to use the vocoder without having a dynamic mic obscuring my view or blocking my access to the modular.
Oddly, speaking into the vocoder is generally what sounded best, so the acoustic sound in the room is absolutely awful spoken word.

- Tracks 1-4 on the NerdSeq are sending pitch CV to the Doepfer Quad VCO, and the Mod output of those NerdSeq tracks are sending envelopes to the Intellijel Quad VCA
- Akemie's Castle is the melodic voice, it is modulated by Pamela's New Workout and the Mod Output of Track 5 of NerdSeq (also where pitch CV is from)
- Track 6 of NerdSeq is just a double of the melody track, but being sent to Rainmaker's 1v/oct input for the Comb Filter
- The Morphogene reel playing throughout this piece is a grand piano and was provided to me by my friend Murray Cameron Smith
- Plonk is being both triggered and having its patch changed by Steppy. I did this by multing the trig outputs to Quadratt, assigning different pitch outputs to each of Steppy's channels. Intellijel detail this patching process in one of their Steppy videos!
- A slewed random voltage from Noise Tools is modulating the gene size of Morphogene, and later on Pamela's New Workout modulates slide as well

The music video will be for the first single off my upcoming album, it'll be out on June 1st! The album, "Bloodless Arches" will be out on June 15th!
This was the first piece I used VSL solo strings on. It turned out pretty well, but I also learned enough while doing it to know that I can do better next time. However the piece is still represented well and I don't have the hours to make the samples perfect right now. Hopefully I can get this recorded for real some day!
This piece was written while I was re-reading House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski. I was doing my master's at the time but felt like I may have been on the wrong path. Johnny Truant - the unreliable protagonist of the book - always resonated with me in this way. My first string quartet is meant to emulate his life's journey, and to give him the peaceful ending that I think he deserved.
I studied counterpoint for a semester and tried incorporating some of those older techniques with newer harmony. The rest was written completely by ear.

I've been sitting with this piece for over a year now and really contemplated never sharing it publicly. This is due in part to going through periods of not really liking it, but also because of how personal it is. Without going into too much detail, I wrote it around the time when my grandfather died and only performed it once (during my grad recital at MacEwan University). I wrote it in two parts, both of which can be explained by the title. The first is whenever "never" happens, expressing how it feels to have something seemingly impossible happen, or perhaps something that you never expected. The second part is "whenever" never happens, its about waiting for something to come your way but knowing that it never will. I hope you get something out of this, it feels good to put this one out into the world so that I never have to play it again.

And thanks to my bandmate Shaquille Headley for recording and producing this tune with me. I mixed and mastered this myself using Waves Gold plugins almost exclusively, those things are great...
Techno babble: I recorded all of the guitar sounds on Shelter with my Strandberg Boden 8 string. I ran it through my Axe Fx II into my Mesa Boogie Mark V using the four cable method. I then recorded the vocoder solo with the Electro Harmonix Voice Box direct from the Axe Fx. Shaq and I just put my amp in his closet at home and it sounded great to us.
Emotional babble: As with the previous songs that I've written for my project "Ways In Waves", Shelter got its name from the purpose it served in my life. For a while it was the only distraction I had from a lot of negative things that were going on. I'm really proud to share this piece with everyone, thanks for listening :)

This is my project Ways In Waves, we started a year or so ago when Shaquille Headley (drums) approached me and suggested we do something weird. I started writing some strange things and showed them to Shaq, and he liked them, so we decided to make this a thing. This tune is really focused on the information overload that my generation has grown up with and the confusion that comes with that. If I were to explain how I wrote Inebriate, I would say that I wrote a song, and then I got the song drunk.

I'm writing a bunch of new music for the two of us and hopefully we'll be able to start gigging soon. The camera didn't pickup much of the backing track which was played through Shaq's sample pad, so I added the backing track audio into the video.
This video was taken at the MacEwan Jazz Combo's spring concert in March 2013. Towards the end of this one, I use the vocoder built into my Axe-Fx II and Sean Bumstead plays his trombone through a BOSS ME-50. I wrote this tune for my friend Josh Hardy who died from a severe head injury last summer. The words are about how someone like me - an atheist - deals with death. I hope you get something out of it, and please: wear a helmet.
