Diane Lebouthillier says the closure was necessary because an endangered North Atlantic right whale was spotted Friday in shallow waters about four kilometres off the coast, east of Miscou Island.
Lebouthillier says her department immediately instituted a 15-day temporary fishing closure in the lobster fishing area known as LFA 23C.
The closure is to run until May 31, and if the animal isn’t detected again the area would then reopen.
Suzanne Lapointe reports.

“At his billion dollar green slush fund, the prime minister’s hand-picked chair is being investigated for lining her own pockets and resigned in disgrace. But another NDP-Liberal appointed director has been caught funneling $42 million she has stakes in. The Liberals knew it but then they promoted her to the infrastructure bank anyway,” Conservative MP Michael Barrett said.
Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne responded saying “the moment we heard about the allegation we launched an investigation — the chair has resigned — we are investigating, we are going to make sure every dollar, Mr. Speaker, that is spent is going to be well spent, we are going to restore governance.”
Government House Leader Steve MacKinnon then questioned the Conservatives about allegations of corruption in their own party saying “I want to know why there is a woman in Aurora named Sabrina Maddeaux and another one — and they’re both women by the way — her name is Rachel Gilliland alleging ‘things don’t seem quite kosher in conservative nomination land.’ And that is after the allegations by Ms. Maddeaux of illegality in the Conservative nomination.”

The oldest patient at the hospital is 83-years-old and the youngest, a two-year-old child who suffered a concussion, Kittiratanapaibool later told reporters.
Aside from the injuries sustained by dozens of others, a 73-year-old British man with an alleged heart condition died aboard the flight.

The Louisville Metro Police Department said at a news conference Thursday morning that video footage from two different cameras – a pole camera and a police car dash cam – will be released shortly.
However, Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said Det. Bryan Gillis, the arresting officer, did not have his body camera activated when directing traffic outside the golf course, meaning there is no footage of the “initial interaction” between the officer and Scheffler.
Scheffler, a Masters champion and the world’s No. 1 golfer, was arrested last Friday while on the way to the PGA Championship in Maryland, after he failed to follow police orders during an investigation into a pedestrian fatality.

Billions of the buzzing insects are expected thanks to a 'double brood,' a rare occurrence not seen in centuries, where the 13-year cicadas and the 17-year cicadas will pop up at the same time.
“They’re your new neighbours, and you can’t pound on their wall and tell them to shut up, but, it’s okay," Dennis Higgins said, who is a cicada enthusiast and granddad out enjoying the sights and sounds of the insects in Western Springs, Ill.
Parts of Illinois will serve as a cross-section for the two broods of periodical cicadas that have spent years living underground before emerging together to briefly mate and die.
"It's part of life, but it's a fun thing," Higgins said. "It comes once every 17 years, so, I hope I'll be here for the next one."

Following the recent release of data about food bank usage in Canada, Poilievre asked Trudeau: “Why is it that Canadians who can't feed themselves have to keep feeding his morbidly obese government?”
Trudeau said social programs like the senior dental care plan and school lunch programs will help Canadians. However, Poilievre criticized the school lunch program, claiming zero meals have been served.
“If government programs were really going to solve the problem he caused, then why are Canadians so hungry?” Poilievre asked.
Poilievre also took aim at carbon pricing, reiterating his claims that it contributes to rising costs of living. He asked, “If it [carbon tax] gets that high and people are all starving in the streets, will that stop the forest fires?” Trudeau defended the policy, claiming rebates help Canadians while fighting climate change.

"Russia launched a satellite into low Earth orbit that we assess is likely a counter space weapon, presumably capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit," Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said. He added that the weapon was launched into the "same orbit" as a U.S. government satellite.
Russian officials, however, dismissed the assertion. The Kremlin emphasized that Russia's actions in space conformed to international law, and Russia has repeatedly proposed a ban on space weapons, but the U.S. has reportedly dismissed these suggestions.

Sunak made the announcement outside 10 Downing Street after holding a meeting of his cabinet where he informed them of his plans to dissolve Parliament and send Britons to the polls.
“Now is the moment for Britain to choose its future,” Sunak said on Wednesday afternoon, reminding citizens the choice is between him or Labour Party leader Keir Starmer — who he suggested did not have a plan of action for the U.K.
Under British law, a general election needed to be held by January 2025, and Sunak had repeatedly said it will be in the back end of 2024. Britain’s Conservative Party has been in power since 2010, the longest reign for a U.K. party in modern times.

“On behalf of Singapore Airlines, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased,” Phong said in a video message. “We are very sorry for the traumatic experience that everyone on board [Flight] SQ321 went through.”
Recovering from their own injuries, passengers recounted their personal experiences aboard the fatal flight. “I saw people from across the aisle just going completely horizontal, hitting the ceiling and landing back down in really awkward positions,” 28-year-old passenger Dzafran Azmir told reporters. “People getting massive gashes in the head,” he added.
“Every single cabin crew I saw was injured. I didn't see anybody who worked for Singapore Airlines that was not injured,” 54-year-old Andrew Davis said, adding that he comforted the wife of the deceased passenger – who was also injured – for a while.
“I think this incident will prompt airlines, whether it's an official mandate or not. But airlines saying we recommend you keep your seatbelt fastened while seated. They should be saying it is mandatory,” Airlineratings Editor-in-Chief Geoffrey Thomas said.
Thomas says the incident was simply weather-related and that the pilots responded as professionally as they could, adding that it will not impact their ratings. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and Singapore Airlines is cooperating, according to the CEO.

Sparing the driver a criminal record while diverting the case away from the overloaded courts, the plea bargain could only be used in cases with non-aggravating factors.
As the Ontario government is cracking down on impaired drivers with new license suspension measures, it appears the government directive issued during the pandemic may still be helping some people avoid a criminal record.

The warrants include Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leaders for actions taken during their seven-month conflict.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called for a ceasefire in Gaza but said equating democratically-elected officials to Hamas, which Canada has deemed a terrorist group, is "troubling."
Other officials echoed this sentiment, including Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who called the comparison "unacceptable."

According to analysts, the government has already launched a “Team Canada” charm offensive as Americans prepare for a pivotal fall election that could see former U.S. president Donald Trump return to the White House. Trudeau said in his remarks that his government knows how to make the case for a strong bilateral relationship.
"The links between the Canadian and the American economy are so deep and indeed getting deeper over the past year our trade numbers have reached higher levels than any time before,” Trudeau said. “It is to the benefit of Americans and Canadians to continue to work well together regardless of who's in the White House.”
“We don't have to be hypothetical about it. We can just cast our mind back to six, seven years ago when President Trump brought in two, three, two tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum,” Trudeau added. “We will be there to defend effectively against unfair or punitive tariffs on Canadians because we know it'll be a lose-lose on both sides of the border.”

Trump’s lawyers called two witnesses in his defence. Justice Juan Merchan said jurors would return next Tuesday to hear closing arguments, with deliberations likely beginning the following day.
Trump’s lawyers had asked Merchan to dismiss the case before it reaches the jury, arguing that it rests on the testimony of a witness, the estranged former Trump fixer Michael Cohen, who has a well-documented history of lying.
Such dismissal motions are rarely successful, and Merchan indicated on Monday that he was inclined to let jurors assess Cohen’s credibility for themselves. Prosecutors say his testimony is buttressed by other evidence.

Polling by Ipsos done exclusively for Global News found four in 10 Canadians say they trust that the inquiry will “get to the bottom of what has really been going on.”
“Canadians are skeptical that the steps that we’re taking now will lead to better outcomes, meaning less interference or no interference by foreign governments,” senior vice-president with Ipsos Public Affairs Sean Simpson said. “I think part of the skepticism is just a lack of credibility that the federal Liberals have overall right now. They’ve lost a lot of their political capital.”
Global’s Mackenzie Gray has the details.
