I wrote this pilot episode when Sean Scott and I were trying to find a broadcaster. My friend and colleague Ira Levy, who was the producer, managed to raise the funds for us to do a seven-minute demo (semantical note: "pilot" and "demo" are synonymous. There are pilot episodes that air, but there are many that do not. You can pick the word you like the most).

In my view, this was the purest and best episode of Jimmy TwoShoes ever made. I got to write it as my dream show. Not a word of what I wrote was cut. Those who have seen it agree that this was the strongest, funniest episode, before meddling censors and second-guessing executives dumbed it down and watered it down.

It was circulated only within the animation and broadcast industries as a proof of concept to land us a television deal.

I still don't know who sent it to me. A DVD arrived literally on my doorstep with no note or address. Somebody obviously just felt I should have it. They were probably afraid that there would be legal liabilities for sharing it, since everyone who had a copy had to sign a legal document saying they would not distribute it. Hence the anonymity. I however never had to sign any such document since I was never officially given one. So here it is!

And now, at last, the long-lost pilot/demo has finally taken the elevator up from Miseryville into daylight. I hope you enjoy it and would love to hear your comments.

The book trailers are for a high school mystery novel that is being released in April 2026 by Cormorant Books. The premise surrounds three high school seniors who are forced to murder a sociopathic teacher who is out to destroy their lives. Kind of Dexter meets One of Us Is Lying with an emphasis on the "Dexter" part of the equation.
HINT: There is a little bit of Helloise in almost everything I write, lol.

The trailers are part of the research for a thesis project I'm doing for my Master's degree over the next couple of months. All of the Our Little Secret trailers are the same. What I'm curious to find out is which thumbnail attracted your attention the most. Feel free to leave comments and share with your friends.

She is an amazing actor, voice actor and director with an incredible range and a stellar career, and I was grateful to be able to interview her.

This Hour Has 22 Minutes - Lazy the Welfare Bear - Written by Edward Kay

PixelsAndPages with Edward Kay 2025-05-20 | During the four years that I was a staff writer and occasional producer on Canada's political satire series, This Hour Has 22 MInutes, I had the opportunity to work with some amazing people and spend my days in a constant state of catharsis writing jokes and sketches lampooning politician and indulging in social commentary. I remember one Christmas season during a snowstorm walking down Yonge Street in Toronto and seeing numerous homeless people sleeping in sleeping bags on the sidewalk with a couple of inches of snow on top of each.

It was a direct result of the provincial government cutting back on social services, and it enraged me to think that humans could be treated that way.

So I wrote this song and sketch. It was based on a character that Rick Mercer had created, Lazy the Welfare bear, and he was generous enough to let me use that character in this sketch.

I sang half of duet. The female voice is Halifax-based singer Jody Cail, who, for #JimmyTwo-Shoes fans, also was the inspiration for Helloise (long story!)

Lazy is played by the great comedic actor and writer Greg Thomey. Rick Mercer and Cathy Jones play the welfare inspectors.

The EMS guy was an actual ambulance attendant that they hired to make sure everything was authentic.

The piece was directed by Henry Sarwer-Foner, who as usual did a meticulous job of bringing out the funny and elevating it from a sketch to something with a cinematic quality.

It was always a joy working with Henry, Rick, Greg and Cathy (and Mary Walsh as well, who is featured in many of my other sketches).

This one remains one of my favourites!

This Hour Has 22 Minutes - Heritage Minutes Parody

PixelsAndPages with Edward Kay 2025-05-05 | New Year's Eve Special Heritage Minutes Parody.

During my four-year run as a staff writer and occasional producer on This Hour Has 22 Minutes, I wrote and produced a lot of satire. Most of it was about politics.

This one, however, combines bestiality, booze, blackouts, domestic violence and New Year's resolutions all in one succinct package. I wrote it to kick off one of our New Year's Eve Specials. I'd always wanted to satirize the earnestness of the Canadian Heritage Minutes and being of Upper Canadian ancestry myself, I couldn't resist.

For Jimmy Two-Shoes fans, you can see the surreal beginnings of Helloise in both of the female roles here.

Greg Thomey, Cathy Jones and Mary Walsh all rose to the occasion and gave brave and enthusiastic performances! And our director, Henry Sarwer-Foner, did an amazing job in both directing and editing this piece, delivering a nuanced sketch.
