People’s Community Clinic, a federally qualified health center in Austin, Texas, has created an Integrative Pain Management Program (IPMP) aligned with best practices to better serve its patients living with complex chronic pain and trauma. The IPMP integrates numerous evidence-based services offered at the clinic, including primary care, behavioral health, substance use treatment, nutrition, acupuncture, yoga therapy, group medical visits, and medical-legal services. The goal is to improve patients’ quality of life, mitigate opioid prescribing, and address inequities in the health care system around pain care. In this session, participants will learn about the different components of the program and how centering relational health can transform the patient experience and their healing journey.

In her presentation, Dr. Moonaz will discuss how complementary and integrative health (CIH) practitioners sometimes feel that their approach to clinical practice is in direct conflict with the concept of evidence-informed practice (EIP). Others simply see it as unimportant to the profession. However, there is actually a natural alignment between some traditional CIH philosophies and the three legs of EIP. Join Dr. Moonaz in exploring common myths about EIP, the very real challenges to incorporating EIP into CIH care, and a few potential strategies for overcoming those challenges.
Steffany Moonaz, Ph.D., C-IAYT, was appointed Associate Research Director for Southern California University of Health Sciences and will help lead the growth of research activity and engagement at SCU. This includes conducting research projects at SCU, collaborating on projects with other institutions, growing research infrastructure, and finding ways to engage SCU students and faculty in the research process.
Most recently, Dr. Moonaz served as the Research Director of Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH), which developed the nation’s first master’s degree in yoga therapy. While at MUIH, Dr. Moonaz founded their research department and developed a robust research program, including collaborations with the National Institutes of Health, the University of Maryland, the National University of Natural Medicine, Oxford University, Veteran’s Affairs, Einstein Hospital, and more. Dr. Moonaz remains an Adjunct Professor at MUIH and continues to collaborate with faculty there.
Dr. Moonaz’s research focus is on the use of yoga and mind-body practices for the management of arthritis and chronic pain. She is particularly interested in health equity and access challenges and the relationship between chronic pain and substance use disorders.
She and colleagues were recently published in BMJ with their article, Development of the CLARIFY (CheckList stAndardising the Reporting of Interventions For Yoga) guidelines - [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8804643/pdf/bmjopen-2021-054585.pdf]: a Delphi study, after finding that reporting guidelines that make research more applicable to clinical practice, policy, and future study have never existed to guide yoga research.
Dr. Moonaz earned her Ph.D. in public health from Johns Hopkins University, where she studied the effects of yoga for people with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Since then, she has served as a subject matter expert, consultant, and investigator for research on yoga and other integrative health practices. Her research has been funded by NIH, the Arthritis Foundation, the American College of Rheumatology, and Johns Hopkins University, and she has received numerous awards for her research and scholarship. She has co-authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications. Many of her publications may be accessed at:
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/myncbi/steffany.moonaz.2/bibliography/public
https://muih.academia.edu/SteffanyHaazMoonaz
researchgate.net/profile/Steffany-Moonaz
In addition to research, Dr. Moonaz trains yoga professionals in various contexts and is passionate about fostering evidence-informed practice in yoga therapy.
Dr. Moonaz has been on the board of the Academic Collaborative for Integrative Health (ACIH) and active with their Research Working Group for several years. She recently joined their Executive Committee and helped to facilitate the ACIH merger with the Academy for Integrative Health and Medicine (AIHM). She now serves as chair for the newly formed Traditional World Medicines-Emerging Professions AIHM Council. Dr. Moonaz is also actively involved with the International Association of Yoga Therapists and with the Accessible Yoga movement that aims to improve yoga safety, access, and equity.
Dr. Moonaz was recently honored at the MUIH Research Symposium where she received the Faculty Poster award, along with her undergraduate intern from Johns Hopkins, for their poster presentation: Development of a Flexible Yoga Therapy Protocol for Pairing with Acupuncture Therapy to Help Manage Chronic Pain.

Over the past decades, thousands of published studies have amassed supporting recommendations to consume fruits and vegetables for physiological and psychological health. Newer research has emerged to suggest that these plant-based foods contain a plethora of not only vitamins and minerals, but perhaps, most importantly, phytonutrients. These phytonutrients have known pleiotropic effects on cellular structure and function, ultimately resulting in the modulation of protein kinases and subsequent epigenetic modification in a manner that leads to improved outcomes. Even though eating fruits and vegetables is a well-known feature of a healthy dietary pattern, population intakes continue to be below federal recommendations. To encourage consumers to include fruits and vegetables into their diet, an “eat by color” approach is proposed in this presentation. Although each individual food may have numerous effects based on its constituents, the goal of this simplified approach was to identify general patterns of benefits based on the preponderance of scientific data and known mechanisms of food-based constituents. It is suggested that such a consumer-oriented categorization of these plant-based foods may lead to greater recognition of their importance in the daily diet throughout the lifespan. Other adjunctive strategies to heighten awareness of fruits and vegetables are discussed.
Objectives:
To learn the science to support the inclusion of plant-based foods for reducing chronic disease risk
To understand how the colors of plant foods coincide with their functionality in the body
To apply concepts learned from the benefits of eating plant foods into clinical practice

Aging is a major risk factor for the leading causes of death in the United States, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, lower respiratory infections, stroke, and Alzheimer's disease. Yet, we do not act on aging because it is considered a non-modifiable risk factor. Since advances in geroscience have fundamentally changed our understanding of the pathophysiology of the aging process, what if we are wrong? What if by viewing aging as a central and modifiable component of disease we are able to better treat and manage chronic conditions better but also increase healthspan and longevity?

Society has often focused on the brain as being the sole influencer of our mood. More recent research has been exploring the added connection of our gut as an important contributor to emotions. This gut-brain duality has confirmed that the gut acts as a ‘second brain’ creating similar biochemical properties that can affect our mental health. Thus, what we eat communicates to our brain and impacts our mood. Specifically, the gut has the ability to create messaging signals that can communicate with the brain. Those messaging signals are created not just by the foods consumed, but also by the environment of the digestive system itself.

Functional and integrative medicine practitioners often utilize high-quality dietary supplements to support their patients’ health. It is critical to understand how to best work with supplements, which types of products or ingredients have the best outcomes clinically, and how to logistically manage supplements within your practice to minimize overhead. There is also a general concern about quality, which is reinforced in the media, and a desire to ensure that the recommended dietary supplements are going to truly help their clients/patients and not cause harm.
Sponsored by: Emerson Ecologics in collaboration with the Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine (AIHM)
