Authors across social media are reporting a brand new rash of automated Amazon takedowns, but there’s no need to panic. While Amazon seems to have no official response to the new surge of inappropriate warnings and book delistings, authors seem to have figured out the likely problem, based on trends being reported, according to a post in the Create If Writing Facebook Group. One author was reportedly told by Amazon that their book was a duplicate of an already published book, when all she’d done was add a sample of book two to the end of book one, a common practice for decades. Authors are running into problems after a variety of other minor changes, such as uploading a new version after correcting typos, a new cover, or even updating backmatter with new links. Luckily, most authors reported that Amazon eventually acknowledged the error and restored their book, although at least one author was forced to engage the Alliance of Independent Authors) for help. One thing that helped most authors get quicker relief was having evidence of copyright and publishing rights handy and ready to go. Stay in the game long enough, and you’ll realize that no one is immune. The ‘game’ can be so frustrating that up to 80% of authors stop writing after just three books, according to Hotsheet Publisher, Jane Friedman. “So, here’s my advice: Let it out,” says author Lisa Roe for CareerAuthors.com. “But whatever you do, please don’t quit. Because your lifelong dreams are very much worth pursuing.” Roe is not suggesting you rant across social media or making waves that will come back to bite you. Instead, she recommends finding your village of writers. “Seek out those who will listen, empathize, pat your shoulder, share similar stories, buy you ice cream or a stiff drink—but who won’t let you give up on yourself. We hear you, we know you, we are you, and we want you to succeed!” There are a lot of ways to find your village, but Roe suggests that even a writing class can be a good start. “Aside from encouraging me to put pen to paper again, the class was attended by a group of wonderful women who also wanted to dip a toe. Women who are still friends 17 years later.” Similarly, you can look for (or start) a writing group, either one that meets in your area or one held online. Another great way to meet like minded authors is to attend conferences. “Not everyone has the means, but if you do, these can be gold,” says Roe. Finally, while many authors bemoan how hard it is to market books on social media, there’s another important roll it CAN play: being social! “It’s amazing how these days one can have an entire relationship with a writer friend you met online, see maybe once a year—or less—or never—and who still will always have your back,” writes the author. “Social media has made it possible to find your village without leaving home.”#selfpublishing and #podcast

You’ve probably noticed all the pictures, graphics, and charts that many traditionally published books have down below their book descriptions. These images are what Amazon calls A+ Content, but it’s not just for Big 5 books. “A+ Content lets you add rich graphics, formatted text, and comparison tables to your book’s Amazon product page, going well beyond the standard description box. It’s free for all KDP authors,” says Written Word Media’s Ricci Wolman, and “it can transform a plain product page into something that looks professionally merchandised.” While the ability to add A+ Content to your books on Amazon has been around for a while, many self-published authors don’t know they have access to it. That’s because A+ Content isn’t managed from your individual book’s page in your KDP Dashboard, says Wolman. Instead, you find it under KDP’s Marketing tab, which is hidden in the top navigation bar. Once you’ve found it, you’ve got options, but it’s best to know all of them before you start generating the content itself. For best results, take a look at the free Canva templates created by Written Word, then check out some examples of popular books in your genre for ideas. Once you have some ideas, jump to Step 3 in the article for instructions on creating A+ copy that’s specific to your book, genre, and readership. Amazon just added two more languages to their free Kindle Translate feature, bringing the number of languages translated from English to five. “The service now supports translations between English and Spanish, German, French, Italian, and Portuguese. The [AI] translation service, currently in beta for KDP authors, allows authors to create and manage their translations,” reports Good Ereader’s Michael Kozlowski. Amazon’s KDP article says that all translations undergo an automated review for accuracy and quality before publication, although authors are able to preview them before publication or allow them to publish automatically once the process has completed. One area that might be worth spending money on is on a cover for the translated edition. If not, translated editions will generate a default cover, which is your existing cover image with a white border and the translated language at the top.
