Enjoy!Radical changes based on YOUR feedback!Share Squid2023-11-22 | Some GREAT public/private feedback on my top secret reveal of the 4th (overhead) game mode in Alpine Rescue. While art is subjective, enough of you expressed (mostly privately) dismay at the prototype art/gameplay of stage 4 that I decided to go "back to the drawing board". Will the community feel more comfortable with this current version? Let's find out! Please leave your honest feedback in the comments, or if you're worried that your comments will come off too negative to the community, just send me a private email (sharesquids@gmail.com). I appreciate criticism, and won't be offended. Thanks to everyone who commented and/or privately messaged me after my last video! Now sit back and enjoy this quick update and big reveal of Stage 4 - Prototype #12, haha.Sneak Peek of secret game mode in Alpine Rescue!!Share Squid2023-11-06 | That's right! As a reward, here's your sneak peek of my current progress on this Thunder-blade inspired 4th stage... delivering the injured hiker to the hospital (ultimately landing your copter on the roof). Exciting things to come, so stay tuned! We are definitely getting closer to digital release, I hope... just really focusing on gameplay, optimizations and adding variety and tweaking levels in the weeks ahead. Alpine Rescue Developments - June, 2023Share Squid2023-07-16 | That's right! I've added Helicopter and Rappelling / Abseiling stages to my Alpine Rescue game! Plus, I talk about some secret projects that I started in Spring 2023, and will be moving forward once I finally finish developing Alpine Rescue.
Bonus Content: Want to know more about that Holographic Vectrex display that I'm working on? Well... basically I modified the instructions on this site... instructables.com/SEGA-HoloseumTime-Traveler-Home-Recreation to allow for a larger concave black mirror to work with the Vectrex. To test this build, I ordered this 11" bowl amzn.to/3OfnjFp which works great for a cell-phone / tablet. Will have to use a slightly larger size bowl for a Vectrex and make some slight adjustments (details in the upcoming hologram video). I'm perfecting the effect with my 11" bowl using videos FROM the Vectrex playing on a small tablet, before going up to the next size and putting a real Vectrex in the box. Like I said, video coming up soon-ish... but need to finish developing Alpine Rescue before I do any more work on the hologram stuff.

These two little centipede segments refuse to follow orders, marching to the beat of their own drum as they rush off at double speed.
Seems a certain code condition caused their move cycle to be called multiple times more often than their slow-poke counterparts. Hey, at least we get to see how fast the game might go in the later levels, right?
Listen, if you enjoy seeing my programming mis-steps, let me know in the comments! These videos are quick, easy to make...and I have plenty of broken code videos from the past that can be shared...while I continue wrapping up development of my full-length Centipede deep dive video and game demo.

Hilarity ensues when centipede segment #10 gets stuck as centipede segment #8 wanders off course and finds himself lost in the back-rooms of the 8-bit matrix. Still not sure what bug caused that (thinking I forgot to put the '#' on a variable that I used for an LDX lookup function).
Fixed the bug somehow and can't recreate it, but so glad I recorded it and found some appropriate janky piano music to accompany #8 on his bugged out journey!

The answer appears to be, YES! (Based on my experiments in this video). By controlling the color values of six independent 8-bit intensity levels we are able to do the complex blending of Red, Green, Blue (RGB) colors required to deliver a true 48-Bit color palette on the amazing Vectrex!
How does this compare to the 24-bit color palette of the PS1 and the 16-bit color palette of the SNES? Check out this video to find out!

Let's enjoy the journey together!Vectrex Development: Alpine Rescue pt. 4Share Squid2022-01-14 | Happy Friday, Vec-Trekkers! It's been a very busy week at work/home, but I somehow found some spare time to do a bit of programming. Updates since the last video include the following: - Acceleration / deceleration working again - Item hit detection working again - 4 levels of turbo speed boost available now - made some art/animations (cabin with animated smoke, snowmobile that has five different perspective angles with animated tread and a rotating line, cliff edge...which isn't shown in this vid) - made several random optimizations (tons more cleanup required, lots of code blocks need reshuffled to be closer together for faster branching, etc.)
That's all I can remember doing at the moment. Stay tuned, my next video/s will be an awesome expose of my impressions and struggles with the 3D imager. Had quite a few close-calls (thanks to the bat) and it got down to the wire at the end with just one life left (again, thanks to the bat).
Blocking off the labyrinth into 9 clearly divided sections (A to I) helped me tremendously. Since there's no easy way to refer to a map while playing, mental tricks for keeping track of map coverage are critical. Even with that memory trick, I still ended up having to hunt for that last treasure.
Of course, it also really helped that I've been deep into this game trying to recreate it in 3D for my "Return to ROM" indie game project. Check out my other videos, or simply subscribe to see up-to-date progress on that!
Lastly, huge thanks to Rick Adams! With just 4kb of assembly code for a 1983 tape-drive TRS-80 computer, painstakingly debugged on a slow cassette tape, he created this smooth-scrolling immersive world captivating a 9-year old kid in rural West Virginia (me), inspiring me to learn programming and eventually start trying to make immersive worlds for my 9-year old kid to experience.Return to Rom Dev.
