My Weight Loss Journey: How I Transformed My Body | Iris Iris 2018-07-09 | One woman shares her inspiring weight loss journey. Transcript I've lost weight, I have gained weight, I've maintained weight, it's been a really long process. But, as everyone says, it is a marathon, it's not a sprint. And I'm deep within that marathon right now. As an operatic artist, you have to deal with the stereotype of, it's not over until the fat lady sings. That's not opera today. You have to be fit. I definitely think that my food habits were shaped in my early childhood. I grew up in a small town in Georgia called Sylvester, it's in the deep south. My entire family is overweight and that's not something that's abnormal in the southern community. Big happy family, emphasis on big, was what we were. Everything revolved around food, cookouts, barbecues, fish fries, all kinds of things. Just food was a big part of it. When I was , this is when I was really starting to come into my own, I stepped on the scale and it said pounds. I knew that that was big, but I also knew that my sisters were bigger than me. So, I was like, I'm doing fine. I didn't see any of the red flags. That's what held me back for so long from actually getting my weight in control. The real pivotal shift was my best friend's wedding in college, I was asked to sing at her wedding in this beautiful valley, in North Georgia. Just a stunning spring day. And I wore a dress that I felt awesome in, and it was really flowy so it hid all those trouble spots, and we had a great day. The problem came when I saw the pictures. It was the first moment in my life that I actually saw myself how others saw me. And I was, it sounds so cliche, but I was so shocked because I was like, who is this woman? You know, she has my smile, and she has my eyes, but she looks swollen. I got on the scale and it read pounds. I knew then, because I was a stone's throw away from pounds, that I could either step up, do something that I've never seen anybody like me or in my community, or you know, anybody but Oprah really, lose weight. And I just want so much for everyone to realize that health and wellness is for everyone. You know, regardless of skin color, socioeconomic status, your job. I started to see results within about six months of me really trying, is when I lost my first to pounds. And, I stepped on the scale and I saw that I was around , and that was groundbreaking. It was addictive. I was like, how far can I go? You don't have to be, you know, a suburban housewife to lose weight. You just have to have an idea that you want better for you. Motivation isn't always there. I don't always want to meal prep, I don't always wanna go work out. But, if you take time to cultivate discipline, it doesn't matter what your motivation is. I know there's gonna be times where maintaining weight's gonna be really hard. I know that. But what I see in the immediate future is me really getting back to a place where my weight loss journey becomes more consistent. 5 Women on Overcoming Self-Hate and Learning to Love Their Bodies | Iris Iris 2018-07-09 | Five women get real about body image issues. Transcript I am ugly. I'm too fat. I'm not good enough. I'm not pretty enough. Closed off, like wallowing in my self-pity. I was in a mind frame of just kinda letting myself go. I remember calling myself a lot of hurtful things. I felt like I didn't matter. Oh, I'm getting emotional, sorry. (laughs) When my best friend was getting married, she asked me to be her maid of honor. Just a few weeks before her wedding, I was pounds, and I hated the way I looked in a dress. I wasn't confident enough to do it. And that was probably one of the most selfish things that I've ever done. So I met this guy on a dating app, and we made plans to go out. And then when the day was getting closer, I canceled. I said to him that my allergies were acting up, but I meant I don't feel confident enough to meet somebody new. Living in California, I live like half a mile away from the ocean, and friends would always invite me to go to the beach. And so I'd always would make an excuse, because I didn't feel comfortable in my own skin to wear a bathing suit at the beach. I wore my brother's bathing suit, which were long shorts, to hide my thighs. At my heaviest, there were times were I couldn't fit in the seats of a rollercoaster. I would just say to my friends, oh, I'm busy that weekend, I can't go, knowing full well I would have loved to have gone if I didn't think that the embarrassment would destroy me in that moment. Everybody feels insecure, and if we share those things with each other, we realize that we're not alone, and it's not about size, it's about feeling good in your own skin. I like that I have a unique shape, 'cause people are always like, oh, but you're short and curvy. And I used to fight it, but now I'm like, okay, I like my curves, like, it's different. So I started at pounds and ended at . And I realized it's not about the number on a scale, but it's me being committed to a healthy lifestyle. So I was a size , but now I'm a size . But I don't focus on those, but now, with my body, I feel like I'm growing into being a better version of myself. I think what I love about my body is its capability to transform, because I've probably lost about pounds already. I'm still very much in the middle of my weight loss journey, and I feel like I'm currently setting the groundwork to getting where I wanna go. [Karen] When I think back to my younger self, I would definitely tell her-- [Meg] Not to make excuses. [Sharron] Wear whatever the heck you want. [Gabby] To be proud of who you are. What Its Like Being a Plus-Size Triathlete | Iris Iris 2018-07-09 | An unlikely triathlete pens a love letter to her body. Transcript Dear body, this is Leona. You are an athlete. I have not always believed this, nor have you always lived the life of an athlete, but you have always been one. I remember the day that I realized that you were almost pounds and the warning the doctor gave me. It clicked in my head that if I did not make changes to make my life healthier, you would not be around to see my nieces graduate high school. I started working out with a personal trainer and a nutritionist and you began shedding weight and getting stronger. I would see people in my community running and I wanted you to be able to do that. So I found my running coach and my running club and my life changed. I found a community of people who supported each other and supported you on this crazy journey. They were there to cheer you on for my first half-marathon, my first triathlon, and too many five-Ks to count. It has not always been easy. You've had injuries and setbacks. There have been times when I did not believe in you. But I have found motivation in my community of people in real life and online. I look at pictures of my nieces and I remember that is also about them. I not only wanna be their favorite aunt, but I also wanna be their role model. I've now started my life over in New York City a week before my th birthday, and I'm ready for new adventures and new ways of proving that you are strong and you can do anything, and helping other women see that they are as well. Survivors of Child Marriages and Forced Marriages Speak Out | Iris Iris 2018-03-20 | Three women who survived child marriages and forced marriages speak out about their experiences. Sara was forced into a marriage at 15, Naila was forced into marriage at 13, and Fraidy was forced into marriage at 19.Marriage under 18 is legal in all 50 US states. In 25 states, there is no legal minimum age where children can get married. Forced marriages can happen at any age. Manipulation, communal pressure, coercion, blackmail, threats and physical abuse are all ways in which someone might be forced into a marriage. Nearly 250,000 U.S. children under the age of 18 entered into a marriage between 2000 and 2015, according to data collected by Unchained At Last. Recently, the Florida Legislature passed a bill prohibiting marriage for anyone under 17. A woman who was 11 when she was forced to marry her rapist worked for six years to help ban child marriages in Florida. Fraidy Reiss is the founder and executive director of Unchained At Last, a nonprofit dedicated to helping women and girls leave or avoid forced marriages and rebuild their lives. Unchained is dedicated to creating social, policy and legal change to end forced and child marriage in America.
