Foxes in Brixton | ProRes Raw | 4K 120fps | Lens Test Bro Ben 2019-01-14 | SHOT AND EDITED BYhttp://instagram.com/aka_bro_benhttp://www.benjaminwachenje.comWith the rise of the Fox, the wildlife in Brixton must stay alert...Apple's ProRes Raw has given new power to the Sony FS5 bypassing the limitation of the camera and making it possible to shoot 4096 x 2160 60fps and even 120fps in 12 bit files using 3rd party external recorders.Many FS5 users had been disappointed to find that internal slow motion shot against a bright backgrounds resulted in magenta artefacts along lines of extreme contrast. Although I found how to work around it I didn't like the idea that I wasn't guaranteed a clean shot when I was faced with strong backlight, especially since backlighting can result in beautiful images.I was keen to see if bypassing the internal image compression would result in a clean image. The ProRes Raw image apparently doesn't seem to display artefacts to the same degree. When properly exposed even against a bright background the problem seems to be all but resolved. This is great news for Sony FS5 users who are considering purchasing the CBKZ-FS5RIF firmware upgrade.In my initial tests I saw small magenta blocks in the image under close examination but this image was poorly exposed and shot with the Sony 50mm 1.8. For a deeper test I paired the Sony with some premium G Master glass and a Laowa 15mm f2 Zero D and paid extra attention to correctly exposing s-log 2. I shot with a Ronin S balanced with a Sony 24mm f1.4 G Master. The details were captured using a Sony 85mm f1.4mm G Master handheld and on a monopod. The recorder was the Atomos Shogun Inferno powered by rotating a bundle of small NP-F550 batteries to keep the setup light. I found the samples to be a revelation and now feel comfortable that this is one of the cheapest ways to achieve 4K DCI at 60 and 120fps. I rigged the Ronin S to be comfortable and manage to mount the Lens and Camera achieving full functionality of the ronin even down to infinity rolls. I have seen many people try this combination and settle for compromised usage but I found that by using Zhiyun counter weights attached to my smallrig plates I achieved perfect balance with no limitations.Despite both the Sony 85mm f1.4 and the Sony 25mm f1.4 being focus by wire lenses I was surprised to find that unlike Zeiss' autofocusing E-Mount lenses the Sony 85mm, and 24mm feel like manual focus lenses. I had previously ignored these lenses thinking that the manual focusing behaved like the Sony Carl Zeiss 35mm f1.4, where slow turns of the focus ring set the lens to fine tuning and fast turns over the same distance would shift the focus plane more aggressively. This is great for fine tuning high resolution images but it is bad if you want to pull focus and get repeatable results. However the G Masters seem to emulate a "One" focusing system. I sold the Sony Carl Zeiss 35mm f1.4 after a few months of frustration but I will be keeping the G Masters in fact they are now my favourite lenses for manual focus work ahead of the Sigma Art Lenses. When choosing lenses to shoot ProRes Raw consider that there will be no internal lens correction. ProRes shooting on the FS5 will overide all of the internal compressions and lens compensations. Both the sigma Art and Sony G master full frame lenses are some of the best choices because they are already well corrected. And of course the Laowa 15mm f2 Zero-D is an exceptional choice for wide angle shots because it exhibits Zero distortion out of the box. Another consideration is storage. To edit this short film I required 1.7TB of storage. This is an added production cost when shooting in pro res and for this reason I opted not to shoot the 1h30min of Astro timelapse footage in ProRes. 04:22, 05:24 and 05:30 were FS5 10bit internal 3840 x 2160 files. 04:03 and 05:17 were not ProRes Raw shots either.Lastly 04:55 was shot on a Sony a6300 3840 x 2160 8bit using a nifty Sony 50mm 1.8. The loss of quality is apparent but the story was more important so I left the shots in. Everything else is Pro Res Raw 4k DCI 4096 x 2160 24fps, 60fps or burst mode 120fps.No Image de-noising was applied to the ProRes footage even in low light.The grade was a simple conversion from Slog-2 to REC709S/o to all of the musicians over at the Artlist artlist.ioFor this second look at Brixton's wildlife I used music from Ben Winwood (Points North), Oliver Michael (Witness) and Tristan Barton (LaPerte).#ProResRaw #SonyGMaster #SonyFS5

Somehow I though it would be a lot bigger. Also I wanted to see if I could get some steady cinematic slow motion shots, only hand held, so no gimbals or sliders were at my disposal. All I had was a short tripod stand. Having sold my Sony A7s to upgrade I also wanted to test this new camera in low light to see how it would perform. SLOG 2 and SLOG 3 don't perform well in low light so I decided to give the EOSHD custom picture profile a shot.Whilst using 240fps slow motion burst mode the audio recording is disable so the sound effects had to be created to enhance the motion.Not my usual subject matter, but the idea was to challenge my self in order to get to grips with the Sony fs5. Nothing is more challenging than animals that do what they like when they like.
