Green Hill Zone - Violin Cover
updated
Sheet music coming soon!
(I've used gameplay footage from Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania, Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble, and Donkey Kong Bananza, all captured on the Switch 2, just for general purposes in this preview video. This will ultimately end up as a project with my own original characters and ideas.)
So, to celebrate DK Bananza's impending launch next month, I thought I'd post getting all the DK games and Mario-related games on the NES in the original Animal Crossing and play through them in a casual Let's Play-style video.
I'm super excited for the new game to release, and maybe I'll post a few videos of it in the future, in addition to Mario Kart World! I hope you enjoy.

I've really gone outside my comfort zone for this cover! I've never played a Persona game before (I gotta change that!), but I've been wanting to participate in more online music projects, and this seemed like the perfect one to start with back in January of this year. I'm also more of a classically-trained musician rather than a jazz musician. Still, I'm very proud of how this turned out, with all the musicians playing on it bringing such a great sound to it!
I wrote a sort of piano cadenza for the introduction, introducing the iconic violin line to kick off the piece in a more relaxed tone. From there, the piece more or less follows two verses and two choruses of the original. I always try to write so everyone gets a turn playing melody or an important part, so it was really fun to weave the melody amongst the different instruments I had to work with. Finally, the piece ends with a call-back to the beginning, in a style I used to do on some of my old covers from a few years ago.

I'm back with yet another Mario cover! This was such a fun project to obsess over during the weekend of the event, and to actually try and create an actual opera! Because the track itself is so short, I wrote an introduction based on the material of the piece to act as an instrumental recitative of sorts, before the music kicks into full gear. I'm humbled so many incredible musicians came to join me in this! Thank you all for an incredible VGMCon event!

I’ve been a big fan of the Animal Crossing series since the original GameCube game around 2003. When I was asked to write a theme for this album, I immediately thought of the safe space the series has provided me over the years, and picked the Able Sisters theme. I have so many memories going into their shop and designing Nintendo-themed clothing or chatting with Sable about her favorite TV shows and that. I hope you enjoy this waltz take on a classic tune, and it brings you warmth and comfort!

To celebrate the release of Stampy's Lovely World map download in Minecraft, I invited a couple friends from The Bonus Points Discord to finally test out my Temple Trap recreation I made in Animal Crossing: New Horizons! It turned out to be so much more fun than I had thought, and I definitely hope we can do it again sometime soon!
This was a very nostalgic video to make, reminding me of all my old minigames I would make and play with friends back in the City Folk days. It also of course celebrated one of my favorite YouTube series now!

I am working on a Super Mario Bros. 3 Kaizo game inside of Super Mario Maker 2! I'm trying to give it a feeling of it being a ROM hack of the original using the tools in Nintendo's Mario level editor. I'll slowly be releasing levels over time, and thought I'd share some clear videos on my channel.
This one's a doozy! The rotating fireballs are meant to represent the rotating discs (or "waffles") from the original Mario 3 found in fortresses. I'm proud of how this one turned out, even if it took me two hours tonight just to get a clear check done!

Come join my friends (Kaitlyn and Marissa) and me as we jump into Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney! We played through the entire first game last year, and recently decided to jump into the second. I thought it would be fun to record our playthrough with our silly voices for the characters, and we plan on continuing to record this as a series. Enjoy!

This is a small orchestral work I finished that was inspired by my love of games and story-telling. I had always had some vision to add an element of animation to it, and this is the final result. I hope you enjoy!

I opted for a text commentary for this video, just showing gameplay of all 96 maps in the game, as well as the 8 battle maps right at the end. If you need something to put on in the background, I think this would suffice for that.
I hope you enjoy this video! Feel free to let me know any favorite Mario Kart memories you may have had over the years. Thanks for watching!
In all seriousness, this was a nostalgic blast to play again!

ABOUT THE ALBUM
Soaring Through The Cosmos is my attempt to create my own string orchestra version of one of Nintendo’s most iconic soundtracks. Before starting work arranging for this album, I had listened to other VGM cover albums that recreated their own orchestras, recording their string parts multiple times to create the effect of a 30-piece orchestra. That is the main thing I did in this album to try and make it feel symphonic and cinematic using my single violin. For variety, I also included piano, melodica, and a couple of auxiliary percussion instruments like a wood-block and wooden frog.
Super Mario Galaxy’s soundtrack has been a distinct part of my childhood since playing it back in 2007 on the Wii, and I remember listening especially to its sequel’s soundtrack before going to bed in the summer of 2010. I knew I wanted to capture these memories enjoying this era of orchestral Mario music, so I included five tracks that appeared or had similar motifs used in both games. The arrangements themselves are faithful to the originals, but, where possible, I added in some of my own style and orchestration techniques I have learned from and used in classical music. It only made sense to include a buzzing bee similar to Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Flight of the Bumblebee” in “The Honeyhive,” for example!
This was my first time mixing and mastering for a full album, and while I can see plenty of room for improvement listening to it now, I am very proud of the final result. This was also my first time commissioning a piece of artwork, which I did with my friend, Gabriella Franzone. We had several meetings discussing the style and how to bring in elements from the Super Mario Galaxy box art and official soundtrack CD art without getting too close to Mario. She returned working in a beautiful watercolor backdrop she painted IRL to simulate me recording this album on my actual instruments. All in all, it was a fun project, and I look forward to attempting another album, either of video game covers or possibly original compositions, in the future!
Thank you for listening! - CityFolk66 / Joshua Iyer.

A bit about this album: All the way back in January 2022, I decided to participate in the GameGrooves Album Challenge for that year, which tasked us with writing 5 arrangements from a single game (or a theme) for an EP. I was looking through the MarioWiki for some possible soundtracks, and decided to go for Super Mario Galaxy, since I have the physical CD for the soundtrack (and discs for both Galaxy games on the Wii from my childhood). I picked the five tracks in relation to music that reappeared in Galaxy 2, and arranged it mainly for strings (violins) and piano, inspired by another GameGrooves album I had heard of Final Fantasy music written entirely for strings and recorded by just a few musicians, playing their parts over and over. The mixing and mastering process was mostly finished by New Years Eve 2022, and I asked a good friend of mine to make the album artwork, which turned out beautifully as you can see! I am so excited to finally release this album, as the files have just been collecting dust on my computer. Please let me know what you think in the comments below! Thank you!
Here is my cover of "Shiveria Town" from Super Mario Odyssey. I recorded this with a group of phenomenal VGM players for a group of Mario Day covers back in March, so this is just a bit late... but we'll just say it's Mario Wonder hype!
"Shiveria Town" has always been one of my favorite tracks in the game ever since Odyssey released. It's got such a charming atmosphere and fits the game's snow world perfectly. I always loved the solo violin part and was excited to learn it, here, passing it along to Nico. It was great to pass this melody around so everyone was able to play it, including the second half, which adds the snare drum for before you go to the racetrack. I hope you enjoy!
A big thank you to @CaitlinAyala , @VRonMediaMusic , @WarpWhistlesMusic, and @NicoMendozaMusic for their contributions playing on this! Please check out the other Mario Day covers (even though they're six months old...) I played for on their channels, too:

Majora's Mask has always been one of my favorite Zelda games, with all the deep lore and fan-theories, excellent dungeon design, and dark atmosphere. This track, "Last Day," encapsulates the entire experience for me and many other players. I actually did a video back in April 2014 where I played alongside the in-game track. Since then I've learned considerably more about VGM arrangements, and I'd like to think this is an upgrade from that. In truth, the only thing I added to the strings were some electronics, as well as a harpsichord to give it a Baroque flavor. I also wrote an introduction, which serves as a transition point and the ending in-between the main melody. I hope you enjoy!

This was my first VGMCon event I participated in, and it was a wonderful experience! This was a challenge to arrange, record, and mix a track for an album in a weekend with several other musicians. It was a whirlwind of a weekend, but I think the track I chose turned out well and fits in with the rest of the album quite well. I tried to write the track as an '80s/'90s ballad, which I felt the instrumentation fit quite well. In this way, I hope to provide nostalgic feelings for those who experienced the game back in 2005 on the Nintendo DS, even though I just discovered it through my favorite gaming podcast on the Nintendo Switch at the start of this year. I got the idea for some drum fills from a jam session I had with a drummer where we played through this track for the first time together.
Thank you to all the incredible people I got the privilege of collaborating with during the event!

I've got some big Mario covers and videos coming in the near future; please keep an eye out for those!
All rights to the games shown here go to Capcom and Nintendo.
Please let me know what you think of this idea! Thanks for watching/listening!
And yes, I came up with that title in two seconds... It is indeed a pun on betamax video! It also fits because these tracks are still being developed, sort of like when a video game enters an alpha or beta stage in its development cycle. So... yeah. :P
I've got some exciting stuff planned right at the start of 2023, so please stay tuned for more info and videos to come! Thank you everyone, and have a fantastic rest of the year!
The idea behind this project was to take these 25 games in order from worst to best and write two measures of music inspired by a track in that game's OST. I hope I was able to capture a little bit of each game and highlight the large variety of styles and worlds explored on the show. Check out the podcast or their YouTube channel if you'd like to see what they've been up to!

I was inspired by an Animal Crossing streamer getting excited for the change of the season to write a piece celebrating my favorite things about the fall, and I figured now was the perfect time to release it as we can see the changing leaves in North America. I originally intended it for a piano duet for my students, then ended up switching it to a piano solo and recording it with some violin added on top. I hope you enjoy.
The piece starts out depicting falling leaves with a three-note motif. The warm melody darkens when it is put low on the piano to depict the start of spook season, before everything brightens for the final statement of the melody and the piece concludes.

Rules:
A team of 3 (or so) players hide inside the pyramid. Then, the lone player starts a timer for 3 minutes and tries to find them. If the timer expires and the hiding players have not been found, they are allowed to escape the pyramid via one of four entrances/exits; once they do, they are safe. If the hider catches all the seekers, they are the winner.
I just watched Kirby's 30th Anniversary Music Fest, so I thought I'd upload this as part of the celebration. I'd LOVE to cover a Kirby track some other time by the end of the year, if I've got time - if you have any requests or recommendations, please let me know!
