Archival footage of “Hot Rod” flight test for 1950s nuclear pulse propulsion Project Orion Roscket Tasartir 2023-10-24 | Archival footage of a novel rocket propulsion system test from Project Orion using controlled detonations from explosives ejected behind the test vehicle called “Hot Rod.” The controlled explosions would push against the vehicle’s rear blast shield, imparting forward momentum to the vehicle as its primary means of propulsion. The test vehicle weighed several hundred pounds and was roughly 3 feet in diameter at the base.This test was conducted in Nov. 12, 1959, at Point Loma, California. “Hot Rod” achieved roughly 100 meters in altitude following several ejected explosive blasts. In the video, some of the small explosive canisters can be seen ejecting aft of the test vehicle prior to their detonation. After the blasts, the vehicle deployed a parachute for a (relatively) soft landing and recovery by ground test crew.Project Orion and this test was part of a joint effort amongst the US Airforce, DARPA, and NASA in the 1950s and 1960s to study whether rockets and spacecrafts of the future could be propelled by means of controlled nuclear explosions (“pulses”). This test itself did not use nuclear explosives, instead using conventional 3 lb. charges of explosives to test the concept. Archival Titan II Launch Vehicle Staging Video in Color Roscket Tasartir 2013-04-28 | Archival NASA video footage of a Titan II launch vehicle first stage separation. Titan II employed a "fire-in-the-hole" (FITH) separation technique whereby the second stage ignites its single engine before the first stage engine is completely shut down, as well as before first stage separation and staging clearance. In the first few seconds prior to separation, you can see the exhaust products from the second stage engine venting out of the interstage exhaust ports. After stage separation and as the second stage clears away from the first stage, the second stage engine ramps up rapidly in thrust with enough force to blast away part of the interstage structure on top of the first stage.
