How Hostomel is being rebuilt after Russian occupation • Ukraïner in English Ukrainer in English 2024-09-12 | Hostomel is a village in the suburbs of Kyiv, near the Antonov airport. In the first days of the full-scale invasion, the Russians planned to use the airport to bring in their troops to capture the capital. However, the airport became a key point of resistance, as the Ukrainian army repelled the enemy. Although their offensive on Kyiv failed, the occupiers caused significant damage during their occupation of Hostomel for more than a month. Today, the Hostomel community is gradually recovering from the occupation, largely thanks to local initiatives. This video highlights two successful examples of reconstruction. The first story is about the residents of a building in the Pokrovskyi residential complex who raised funds to restore their destroyed facade. The miracle town: restoration of Makariv • Ukraïner in English Ukrainer in English 2024-09-05 | Makariv is a village located about 50 km from Kyiv, which was on the route of the Russian army during its offensive on the capital and was heavily damaged during the fighting and occupation that lasted from late February to April 2022. Almost 30% of all buildings in the village were destroyed or damaged, most of them being residential structures. The Russians also destroyed buildings of preschools, schools, colleges, a library, a private hospital, two museums, a church, a radio tower, many grocery stores, catering establishments, and more. Industrial infrastructure, administrative buildings, and facilities for electricity, gas, heat, and water supply also suffered damage.After the liberation, the Makariv community gradually began to rebuild. Restoration of Irpin after the Russian occupation • Ukraïner in English Ukrainer in English 2024-09-02 | Irpin is one of the cities where post-occupation reconstruction has become a multi-stakeholder process. Residents of an apartment building are repairing roofs damaged by shelling and replacing windows in their apartments themselves. Foreign partners are restoring some socially important facilities. The Ukrainian government has initiated the construction of a critical bridge over the Irpin River next to the one that was destroyed. Ukrainian experts have developed a digital platform, DREAM, where affected communities and interested donors can connect and build transparent cooperation. In this episode of the Restoration multimedia project, we discuss the state digital platform for raising funds for reconstruction, the activities of the State Agency for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure, particularly the reconstruction and memorialisation of the Romanivskyi Bridge. Borodiankas revival: rebuilding after Russian occupation • Ukraïner in English Ukrainer in English 2024-08-29 | The little town of Borodianka is located 50 km (31 miles) north of Kyiv. It was heavily damaged during the Russian army's attempt to capture the capital and was occupied for more than 30 days in early spring 2022. The Russians killed many civilians and destroyed much of the village, including its main street. Borodianka didn’t start rebuilding immediately after its liberation from the occupiers; first, it was necessary to document the crimes of the Russian army, account for the destruction, clear the rubble, and develop reconstruction projects. Mykolaiv reimagined: how a war-torn city is being restored • Ukraïner in English Ukrainer in English 2024-08-26 | The battle for Mykolaiv lasted from February to November 2022, and because of this, the locals know firsthand the reality of Russian aggression. Constantly shelling Mykolaiv with artillery and rockets targeting residential infrastructure, medical and educational institutions, and city communications, the enemy sought to capture the city, resulting in significant damage. When the Ukrainian military drove the occupiers back to the left bank of the Dnipro River, the local population — many of whom had been evacuated during the defense of Mykolaiv — began to return home.
