Scaling Organic Farming in Bali, Indonesia Jem Bendell 2025-06-21 | After 2 years of operation as a demonstration farm, school, and event space, for organic and regenerative agriculture, Bekandze Farm hosted a meeting of organic farmers, distributors, experts, and food retailers. North of Ubud, on May 17th 2025, the participants discussed why organic farming is such a small part of agriculture in Bali, despite the opportunities provided by the environment and visitor economy. After discussing challenges they explored potential solutions for scaling organic farming on the tropical island and more widely in Indonesia. Achieving that would help all people on the island, increasing their food security by decreasing dependence on agrochemicals. In that sense, organic and regenerative methods of farming are also methods of collapse preparedness, or practical Deep Adaptation. The enabling of collaboration across the value chain to pursue such goals requires support. To help this initiative, please contribute to the crowdfund. The name of the farm is taken from the medicine Buddha mantra. It was widely recited in Bali during the early years of the 2020s, by people from multiple religions: "tayatha om bekandze bekandze maha bekandze radza samudgate soha." This ancient mantra invites us to heal our separations with each other, wider nature and the divine. “Maha bekandze” reminds us of the deeper dimensions to healing: we can lessen our attachments and experience ourselves within the flow of all life. One conference explored how we might become more 'collapse ready' in emotional, practical, and political ways. This 'deep adaptation' event was organised by local residents and included an afternoon panel with the Green Party Mayor of Glastonbury, Indra Donfrancesco, the co-founder of Extinction Rebellion, Gail Bradbrook, the host of Planet Critical, Rachel Donald, the host of All That We Are, Amisha Ghadiali, and author of 'Breaking Together', Professor Jem Bendell. Joining them midway was Shambo, the Chihuahua.Discussions ranged from the science and politics of climate change, to caring for loved ones, to whether localisation needs a complementary effort at international political influence. Scholars Oath to the Future launched at UN climate conference Jem Bendell 2022-12-13 | At the COP27 climate summit of the UNFCCC, in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, the Scholars' Oath to the Future was launched. Within the oath, scholars apologise for their past caution and promise to all young people who face a climate-damaged future that they will be bolder and more engaging in future. By the day of its launch, 165 scholars from 34 countries had taken the oath. Over the coming months they will read it to their students or other young persons they work with and engage with the feedback. Reverend Michael Dowd discusses his journey on collapse with Prof Bendell and guests Jem Bendell 2022-11-01 | Michael Dowd is known today for his leadership in the realm of “post-doom," which his website defines as: "A fierce and fearless reverence for life and expansive gratitude — even in the midst of abrupt climate mayhem and the runaway collapse of societal harmony, the health of the biosphere, and business as usual."“Post doom, no gloom," Dowd suggests, is the stage of the grief cycle beyond mere "acceptance." Three years after posting on youtube his first "postdoom conversation" (with Shaun Chamberlin), the site now offers a total of 85 — including a conversation with me in March 2020. Michael has also posted more than a dozen of his own, information-dense videos to serve as a crash course for understanding our global predicament, with special attention to "ecological overshoot, the already decades-long collapse of thermo-industrial civilization, and how it is still possible to live life fully and love the life you live."Dowd's personal journey is from Roman Catholic upbringing, to evangelical student, to liberal protestant minister, and now his own brand of “post-doom pastor". His mentors include Thomas Berry (1914–2009), whose inspirational writings on the evolutionary epic turned Dowd into a religious naturalist in 1988, followed by Dowd's first book in 1991, Earthspirit: A Handbook for Nurturing an Ecological Christianity. In 2015, Dowd became an acolyte of the originator of environmental sociology — a mentor he would never meet. Two weeks after William Catton died, Michael encountered Catton's 1980 book on a recommendation by John Michael Greer. Overshoot: The Ecological Basis of Revolutionary Change, is the book Dowd credits for his shift away from climate activism into the final stages of the grief cycle, culminating in, what he calls, “post doom, no gloom collapse trust and love-in-action".The Q&A will cover topics such as:1. Jessica is a member of the Deep Adaptation Forum, a film-maker. She is based in her ancestral island home of Dominica, in the Eastern Caribbean.
