Eggerland Mystery doesn't have much music, a jingle or two and a 30 second main loop during the game, all played on a 3 channel PSG. So stretching it out into a full remix was a bit of a challenge. I decided early on I wanted to give it a swinging feel and some swagger, and I wanted to honor both the place on the tracklist and theme of the album/book by using chiptune sounds. I sampled the drums of my MSX-Music expansion (a Yamaha YM2431) from my MSX, slapped some processing and swing on it, added a lot of FM and chiptune instruments, did some layering, figured out it needed a chiptune solo too, and this is what came out. A bit ecclectic perhaps, but I think it fits the source and the album concept.
Arrangement-wise the source track consists out of 3 square wave channels, a bass, a lead part and a harmony. All of these are used liberally throughout the track; sometimes as-is, sometimes just the harmony or lead part playing solo, sometimes just the bass. And sometimes in an embellished form with extra notes and/or a healthy amount of swing. Also various smaller phrases and patterns were sprinkled throughout the track; see if you can spot them all!
It was a lot of fun to go way back to my childhood nostalgia and remix a song from my beloved 8-bit MSX computer for an OCR album. Hope you enjoy!

Apart from new vocals, I also recorded a bit of guitar, polished up the lead parts, sprinkled some effects and subtle extra parts in there, cleaned up the mix and overall brought it the track into 2024.
At its core, this still is a remix of the stage 1 song from the MSX shooter Aleste 2, made by Compile in 1989. It started out as an experiment with Realivox Blue, the instrument that does the vocals. I was playing around with it, it sounded quite nice and the rest of the song more or less took off all by itself. After the main part of the song was done, I added the intro and the break, giving it a bit of an ethereal, otherworldly touch.

Inspired by @missingsoulproject 's DJ set and interview on @MSXGOTO40 I decided to cover the ending "Memoire" from MSX2 shmup Space Manbow as part of a challenge at the end of 2023. For a first try with a new tracker and soundchip it turned out okay. Hope you like it!
Audio recorded from actual hardware, played by an MSX turbo R using vgmplay and a Neotron sound cartridge.

For this track I decided to lean into my original arrangement of "Fragments of Memories", and specifically the minor key I used in the first half of "Moments". Also, given the short amount of time and my fondness for the genre, I couldn't resist turning it into synthwave once again. Since there were already lyrics for "Moments", it made a lot of sense to make it a vocal remix too. Fortunately Natalie (Sirenstar) was once again on board to provide some kickass vocals for it, as well as some voice acting with lines gracefully borrowed from Ellone's in-game script. Structure-wise it's a bit different from "Moments" though; while I was able to use the verses as-is, I felt that what was a bridge in my original remix would serve better as the chorus for some more oomph, and I had to repurpose the original chorus as the sax solo (courtesy of Lucas Guimaraes). An interesting arrangement puzzle, for sure, but I think it worked out well in the end. This also happens to be the first track I actually played the lead guitar myself on. Needed too many takes and help editing, but it's progress!
So there you have it, an unexpected remix of a remix that I hope you'll enjoy and makes you go "Hey, did I hear this before?" in a good way. Many thanks to my collaborators Natalie and Lucas for joining me on this one!

Lyrics:
[Intro]
People say you can't change the past.
But even still, if there's a possibility, it's worth a try, right?
[Verse]
Oh, I do recall
Losing all
Now that we parted ways
Our memories
Will soon fade away
The feelings I can't convey
[Chorus]
I'm stuck in the past
and I didn't see
But in the here and now,
I'll be the best I can be...
Yeah
[Break]
You can't change the past.
I just found that out.
I can no longer make it back to that moment...
[Verse]
All my thoughts remain,
You and Raine,
Times I treasured the most
All the jokes we shared and
All of the laughter,
Meeting you was a joy
[Chorus]
[Break]
I couldn't change the past but seeing it was more than enough.
What's important is right now. I finally realized that.
[Verse]
I recall the day,
Danger came
But I couldn't escape
You came running in
To save me again
Moments just like back then
[Chorus]
Yeah, yeah, yeah!
[Outro]
You can find out things about the past that you never knew.
And from what you've learned, you may see some things differently in the
present.
You're the one that changes.
Not the past.
"My Mind", essentially the track that will become Squall and Rinoa's love theme and one of the variations of "Eyes On Me", stood out to me for its simple melodic lines and structure, and I figured it would be nice to play around with it. After a quick sketch I figured the idea would work well enough, so I started playing around with an idea for the lyrics, with Rinoa head over heels in love with Squall and unable to get him out of her mind. I wanted to keep things fun, upbeat, lighthearted and not taking itself too seriously. Just having fun. One could say "Heartily" enjoyable... (I'll see myself out).
Concept done, I started recruiting for a vocalist. I already knew I wanted to have female vocals on this track, so I was glad to have Natalie on board again, after our first Terranigma remix "Will We Meet Again?". Since she also knew and enjoyed the game (and at the end contributed her own track to the album!), it made collaborating fun and easy. It also meant that we could co-write the lyrics. Always a big help, because writing good lyrics that convey the right intent and flow well isn't easy. And of course we couldn't help sneak in a good amount of references to scenes and quotes from the game, see if you can spot them! Also enjoyed adding the dulcimer lick from the opening of "Eyes on Me" to various places in the track, as a bit of a sneaky reference and deep cut.
During production of the track I was already thinking that this track didn't really seem to be the original drum & bass track I had in mind, but when I wrote the ending lines with the spoken word and had Natalie record those, it finally clicked with us what the genre of this track actually is: "Anime Opening Anthem". Works for me!
Production itself was a bit of a struggle, since I did this track in Bitwig (my main DAW is Logic Pro). It was struggling with playing back the track without glitching, vocal editing was not very smooth either, and I'm still a bit unsure by how the mixing and routing works. So it was a bit of a rough journey and I couldn't *quite* get things to sound like I wanted. That's all on me though, I guess Logic Pro is just Stuck In My Mind...
Big thanks to Natalie for jumping on board with me on this track for the entire time it was in production (about a year, this was the first track I started for the album and the last one that got finished). Hope you enjoy what we created and get some positive vibes out of it too!

Lyrics:
[Verse]
What did you think
when you saw me smile at you?
Maybe you’ll know
If we dance the night away
What's in your heart?
Do you wanna show me?
Just take a chance
On whatever comes our way
[Chorus]
You're stuck inside my mind
I think of you all the time
And when I see your face
I feel like I’m flying
I put my spell on you
The first time I met you (you’re mine!)
You’re stuck in my mind
And I feel like it could be magic
[Verse]
I felt you near
When everything was fading
Drifting alone
Never thought I’d be so lost
Time standing still
Darkness all around us
But you held me close
And now I’m feeling so alive
[Chorus]
Stuck in my mind
You're one of a kind
I'll make you mine
The best lookin' guy (round here)
I’ll never forget the day
The first time I met you (so cool!)
You’re stuck in my mind
And I feel like it could be magic
[Bridge]
Stuck in my mind [4x]
[Verse]
I know what I am
The future’s so uncertain
But here in my dreams
I will always find you
Promise you'll stay
And be my knight forever
'cause you give me hope
every time I see your smile
You're stuck in my mind…
[Coda]
I just know that, whatever comes our way, whenever I feel lost, you will be there for me, waiting at the lighthouse. And I will be there for you, I promise!
The original idea was to try and turn it into a bit of a folk metal track, with most parts performed by actual people, and to give the track a bit of a new vibe. Folksy instruments are always a good match for Secret of Mana music, and with the metal elements the idea was to give it both a lot of energy and an interesting, different style. It may have turned out more like rock than metal, but at least it's an interesting blend!
The source track is a bit of a weird one, and initially I struggled a bit to make it work in the intended style. Especially the second half took some head scratching, but I managed to sneakily work through it and I'd like to think it all turned out rather well. This also the first track of mine where 99.9% of the instruments are actually performed by humans! (the only non recorded parts are the whale sound in the beginning and orchestral bells tucked away somewhere).
Anyway, hope you enjoy!

Sadly we ran into issues with the audio drivers and couldn't make the track sound on actual hardware as it sounded in Arkos Tracker. That meant I had to redo the track in TriloTracker FM. I had to limit myself to just two PSG channels (because of how TTFM works), but got 6 FM channels and FM drums from the Yamaha YM2413 as a bonus.
Recorded from actual hardware (Sony MSX2+ F1XV). No additional processing or effects applied.

Since the theme of the album is "chill", I chose to do a very relaxing, mellow arrangement of "Spirit of the Night" from Secret of Mana for it. A bit film noir inspired, with a mellow trumpet (courtesy of TSori) and a contrasting dizi part (courtesy of SableProvidence), the slower tempo of the track also helped me to record many of the parts myself (most notably guitar and bass, but also organ). Hope you enjoy it and that the track relaxes you!

Wrote this track for the Pixel Mixers Octopath Traveler album. Originally I opted to do the main theme, but got stuck and wasn't feeling it, so I was glad that this particular track, "The Gate at Finis" became available again. Due to the arp that's one of the main motifs of the source track, I was instantly inspired to do some synthwave/chillwave style track.
Since it was a collaboration album, I also needed a minimum of two guests (something I initially almost forgot about). I already had a saxophone part written and was originally wanted to just stick with samples for it, but due to the collaborative nature of the album, I decided to reach out to find a saxophone. Help arrived in the form of Eleanor Hébert, who handled the sax recording and recruited Bobbie Jane Desforges to perform the part. I also needed another instrument, and decided to go for the cello for this track, an unconventional choice for this genre. I think it works very well in the more cinematic middle section of the track, and it also goes hand in hand nicely with my vague notion to create an EP in this style, with some less conventional instruments, similar to the Okami track I created earlier.
As is usual with my electronic/synthwave inspired tracks, there's lots of synth layering going on to create this particular sound, some effects and transitions to keep the flow and bounce in it, and in general a good amount of care to make the entire track flow nicely. I'm rather proud of how it all came out, especially since the past 2 years have been pretty unproductive musically, and it's good to get back into the swing of things. And of course a big thank you to Bobbie Jane, Eleanor and Chromatic Apparatus for their performances that brought the track to the next level.

Here's a track I did for the Pixel Mixers Okami album, one of the very few I did in 2020. I'm not super familiar with Okami, but the music always resonated with me because it's very melodic. So when I sat down to browse the open tracks on the album, I stumbled upon Cherry Blossom Shower and felt it could use the synthwave treatment. I started out with some Blade Runner-esque basses, just by messing with some arpeggios, the Linn drums made their appearance and suddenly I had a decent backdrop going.
I still wanted to keep some of the original ethnic flair in the track, so I opted for an (intentionally) artificial sounding koto, by layering some real koto samples with a synthesized version. The koto reminded me of the typical 80s rompler shakuhachi samples that made their entrance in a decent amount of 90s songs, so I thought "shakuhachi, sure, why not?" and wrote a few parts for it. I wasn't quite satisfied with how it sounded with my samples, so I reached out to Gregory, knowing that he has a shakuhachi and was learning how to play it. After a few back and forths, and me transposing the track into a key that is actually playable on the instrument, he recorded the parts, I layered it with a synth flute to make it sound not too realistic and blended it in with a sense of uncanny valley-ness.
From the get-go I already knew I wanted to include electronic guitar in it. I wrote down some parts, showed it to Juan and asked him if he'd be interested to replace my midi noodling with some of his kick-ass guitar playing, and fortunately he agreed. He also wrote a tasty, 80s Whitesnake inspired guitar solo to bring the track to the next level.
And there you have it, an ethnic-synthwave hybrid track with synths, taiko, shakuhachi and electric guitar. Something that on paper probably shouldn't quite work but I'm rather pleased with how it came out. Itadakimasu!

When the Pixel Mixer's community announced they were going to produce an album to celebrate the Final Fantasy 7 Remake release, I immediately knew I wanted to join in. The PS1 was the first console I owned, and FF7 was the first game I got for it, so it has a special place in my heart.
For the album, I ended up with my preferred choice of Tifa's Theme. Tifa is a very interesting character to me. I wanted to try and capture Tifa's spirit as I saw her, as this strong, badass but also somewhat shy, deeply caring and slightly anxious woman and tried to express that in the music and the arrangement. This piece is also a lot more personal to me than my other works; during the creation of this track I got very close to someone that, to me, has a lot of these same personality traits, and as a result the track became a tribute to this person. It's definitely a great feeling to be able to capture such a cherished moment in time and express it through music!
Right from the start, I already knew I wanted to do a full orchestral track, my first in the Pixel Mixers community. My goal was to involve as many musicians as I could to perform and record the parts, in my continuing quest to at one point hopefully get one of my arrangements performed live one day. This was also my first time producing (and working with) actual sheet music (jorito.net/files/tifa/Full%20score.pdf) rather than just sharing MIDI, just to try and make it a bit easier for the musicians. A bit of a learning experience that worked out rather well and will probably become a more structural thing moving forward.
As always, I want to express my gratitude to all the performers who were willing to work with me on this track and bring it to life. A big thank you to Maria, Amerlyn, Andrew, Chromatic Apparatus, Andrew, Travis, Lauren, Gregory, Damian, Kyle, Tsori, Dewey, John and Natalya!

I was a late addition to the album, and only because a claimed track became free. The game series, Crash Bandicoot, was already predetermined. I am not super familiar with the Crash Bandicoot series, but when checking out the OST, I stumbled upon this gem called "Turtle Woods" that had this very tasty hook that just needed to be rearranged. Inspired by Funk Fiction's track "It's-a-Me" (soundcloud.com/ocremix/01-its-a-me-super-mario-world-funk-fiction) on OCReMix' remix album Super Cartography Bros (cartography.ocremix.org), I opted to try my hand at some nu-disco. Of course that also meant recording and adding various silly noises, and I ended up re-creating one of the game's sound effect too, for extra effect. This also was my first solo track in a long while, so that was a lot of fun. Hope you'll enjoy the track just as much as I do. If you do, please buy the album and support Child's Play through it!

This track was a loooong time in the making and saw its fair share of bumps on the road, much like the story of Ark, the protagonist in Terranigma. Originally started in mid 2016 for the OCReMix Terranigma album, it got shelved for over 2 years until the album project got restarted. But I'm glad I was able to finish it, and I hope it conveys *just* the right feeling to anyone who played and enjoyed the game.
Crysta plays a key role in Terranigma. It may just seem your regular oldskool RPG home town music and just the place where the game starts (and ends). You don't even see or hear it a lot in the game, but it *does* tend to stick with you because of the way the story is told. Much like Crysta, I wanted this track to not only give a sense of home, of comfort, of belonging, but also a sense of development, discovery and overcoming the things life throws at you. Did I succeed? Well, that's for you to decide.
I always envisioned this to be a song with vocals, but finding a lead vocalist turned out to be a challenge. Due to the long production time and various life circumstances, it was only until at the last moment, when all parts were already recorded, that Natalya (Earth Kid) was able to help out. I am glad she did, and you gotta love how her voice blends with Joy's in the choruses :) Kain White was kind enough to play the arpeggiated guitar part and the strumming in the choruses (even if I did record some more guitars for the choruses myself to fill it out a bit more), and Lauren (the Flute) provided the expressive flute parts. Accordion was done by yours truly, because I had one lying around and it just fit the bill. As always, big thanks to everybody that helped bring the track to life; while samples are pretty good nowadays, they are never a 100% substitute for real instruments played by real people.
Lyrics:
Verse 1
How I dream of the wondrous things
that home's safety never brings.
Adventure,
See how far I can fly...
If I
Spread my wings.
Chorus
I want to find my way,
As long as I stay home,
I never
will know.
Verse 2
I feel lost in uncertainty,
Struggling to find out who I will be.
I'm stumbling,
But I cannot turn back...
(I) Must learn
Who I am.
Chorus
I have to find my way,
As long as I stayed home,
I never
could know.
Verse 3
Looking back, I can clearly see
I am not who I thought I would be.
Misguided,
When I faced it, I knew
Just who
I could be.
Chorus
I will find my way,
As I go on this journey,
To learn
Who I am.

I’m a big fan of JRPGs but sadly haven’t played Terranigma. As such, I was totally unfamiliar with this great soundtrack. When recruiting for the OCReMix album started, I went over a few of the tracks to see if anything struck my fancy. "Mountains" instantly resonated with me because I thought it’d do well with some chugga chugga guitars combined with orchestral, a style that I love. As usual I started the arrangement with midi and samples. The rhythm guitars already sounded good with samples, but with a bit of help from my pal Callum (Tuberz McGee) they really came to live and gave the track the energy it needed. Had lots of fun writing the guitar solo at the end, and I dig Callum’s performance there too. The other guitar leads were played by Manji, who gratefully replied to my request for real guitars after my initial midi WIP. Lastly I reached out to Lauren, who I worked with on another track. Turns out she’s not only a great vocalist, but also a die hard fan of Terranigma, so getting her on board to record the soaring operatic vocals to give the track that extra bit of epicness wasn’t all that hard.
All in all I’m pretty proud of this track and happy how it turned out. Extra kudos to my collaborators for joining me on the ride, it’s always amazing to see how much of a difference great live performances make! And if you’re wondering about the title... "Skaði, fjallið veiði gyðja” is Icelandic (not Old Norse unfortunately) for Skadi, hunter-goddess of the mountains. The original album director painted a vivid picture about Vikings, icy mountain peaks and firepits when he listened to my track and I thought it’d be nice if the title reflected that.

Near the end of the OCReMix Terranigma album project, I found myself inspired to take on another track. I was pretty intrigued by the "Resurrection medley" on the list of available tracks. When I sat down and played with the main arpeggio from "Into the Door", suddenly synthwave happened. Not a bad thing, not at all!
Fortunately the other resurrection/revival themes have a decent amount of melodic content buried in them, so I took what I could and just ran with it. The arrangement more or less wrote itself after that, and while the connection with the resurrection themes might not click instantly (mostly because you hardly hear these songs in the game), it actually has a ton of source in it. I also tried to incorporate the game's themes of resurrection and reincarnation into the lyrics. I found myself inspired by the same line from the game's script - "If we are bound by fate, we will meet again in time, somewhere" - and that quickly became the foundation for the track.
Finding somebody who could do both the synthwave genre and the lyrics justice was a bit of a dilemma. After some asking around I found Sirenstar, who has been active mostly in Materia Collective, and she turned out to be not only a great synthwave fan but also a great fan of Quintet! Both turned out to be a great help, because she really did the parts justice and even pointed me to some new synthwave artists to enjoy :)
I also had some guitar parts written but was in need of a guitarist to play them. Help arrived in the form of Juan Medrano, a.k.a. Sixto Sounds, whom I have always admired for his great guitar work. Turns out we both dig the 80s sound, so getting him on board was mostly a formality. Or in his words: "80's as fuck. Melodic as fuck, keep coming to me for guitar parts", followed by a "I dig it!" when he heard the final version. Gotta hand it to the man, he has a flair with words just as much as he makes his guitar sing. Especially dig the tasty solo!
Once all parts were recorded, I still wasn't 100% happy with the flow and how the theme was represented; it had no anchor, so to speak. After some thinking, I settled on recording some more vocals on talkbox (the recurring "Will we meet again?") and that really seemed to glue the track together. Hope you dig it, and till we meet again!
Lyrics:
Intro
Will we meet again?
(2x)
Verse 1
When fate took you away,
It led my life astray.
Don't know what to
Do without you near.
(Will we return once more?)
The path ahead unclear,
Will we meet again?
Chorus
If not in this life,
We'll meet next time…
Bridge
Will we meet again?
(3x)
Will we? Will we?
Verse 2
If we are bound by fate,
We'll maybe reunite?
With a second
Chance to try again,
(Will we return once more?)
Our paths might cross once more.
Could we meet again?
Chorus
If not in this life,
We'll meet next time...
Solo
Will we meet again?
(9x)
Will we? Will we?
Verse 3
We got a fresh new start,
Fate can't break us apart.
This time we will
Make it all work out,
(Will we return once more?)
'Cause I will wait for you
Till we meet again.
Chorus
If not in this life,
We'll meet next time...

Ending
We will meet again

"Perel" was a last minute drop out on the Terranigma album, and I was sad it would not be on the album. So I did what any good album director with music skills would do: arrange it myself. Originally it started out as a chiptune track, just because I wanted something simple that could be finished quickly. When pondering a title, I recalled this Youtube review of Terranigma, where they called Perel, a supporting character with a skateboard, a "typical 90s kid". Since it already had the groove and bounce that you hear now, I quickly settled on "Groovin' Like a 90s Kid" as a title. When I sat down again the next day, I figured "why not take this bounce to the next level and go all the way New Jack Swing and 90s cheese with it?". And so it happened. Can't say "no" to the cheeze after all. And gotta have those orchestra hits, too. No holding back, gotta go all out.
I quickly figured out that it would need rap to make it a true homage to the 90s, but... where does one find a rapper who not only knows Terranigma to write some suitable lyrics but can also deliver it quickly? After some asking around, Gnegon offered to help out. He knew the game, had done a single rap verse in one of his own tracks before and wouldn't mind giving it a try. After some back and forths, he wrote some lyrics from Perel's 90s hipster perspective and was able to to get it done just before the deadline. Same goes for Juan; we both share a fondness for melodic stuff and we both have warm fuzzy memories of the 90s. He liked what he was hearing, and was able to help out again just in time with his signature Sixto sound.
Anyway, it was a lot of fun to do this track, and maybe a bit of a guilty pleasure. So while I was sad it was dropped, I am happy I picked it up and got to play around with it. Also major kudos to Gnegon and Juan who hopped on board and helped bring the track to the next level with their performances, at the drop of a hat no less.
Hope it makes you groove like a 90s kid too, I know it did make me!
Lyrics:
Hey man, what's up? What's with the drags?
You might've looked cool in the old times
But'cha now in the land of fresh and dope
And if you wanna know - then Perel's your bro
Straight outta Freedom deckin' down your way
We're groovin' in the 90's, know what I say?
In all your ages I bet you've never seen moves
Like the way I twist and turn and groove
You see this board? Well, that's my credo
See me kick and flip and fly like a torpedo
So for now just chillax and enjoy the show
I'mma swing it 'til this whole world has to go!

For Pixel Mixer's Final Fantasy 9 Tribute album, I wanted to do some electronic music again. Inspired by some Future Bass tutorials on Youtube, I thought it would be a fun genre to explore. I started sketching some ideas, and quickly had a Future Bass and a more DnB inspired second part cobbled together that became the backbone of the track. When I showed it to the album director, he said "I had to focus to recognize it, try to add a thing or two to bring it home just a bit". Whoops, guess I went overboard with the 'own interpretation' part again!
After wrestling with the arrangement some more to make it more recognizable, I also was ready to think about how I wanted to fill the melodic parts (usually the only parts I take from the source). I asked Earth Kid if she'd be interested to sing on one of my electronic tracks again, and fortunately she was more than happy to do so. As usual, she totally delivered an awesome performance and also did great with the weird harmonies I wrote.
Unlike the Suikoden 3 track we previously worked on, this time I wrote the lyrics (for better or worse). I thought it'd be nice to try and write them from the perspective of Cid (who in the game cheated on his wife and got returned into an oglop and later a frog), who is looking back on his mistakes and wants to make amends with his wife. Couldn’t help but sneak in a frog reference in the lyrics as well as some frog sounds, just because :)
While the arrangement, perhaps a bit liberal at first glance, can be enjoyed on its own and without any connection to the game, I do hope that the attentive FF9 fan will appreciate the nudges and connection to the game and finds it extra enjoyable.
Lyrics:
Lost in myself,
Trapped inside,
I can't help but wonder
How my mistakes led me here
Can I ever fix this?
When I look back,
You and me,
And the bond between us
How did it all go wrong?
If you could
Rescue me...
Would you help
Set me free?
Would you unchain me?
If I could
Go back and change the past
Would we then have a chance
To try and make it last?
I would give anything
to be with you again
If I can change my life,
Will you be there to help
and unchain me?
Let, let
Let, let me out
Set, set
Set, set me free
Get, get,
Get, get me out
Help me,
Please unchain me
It's clear to me,
I was wrong
And I know I hurt you¦
If only I knew how we
Could be back together
I'd give it all up for you,
I'd even embrace to be
turned into a frog...
If you could
Rescue me...
Would you help
Set me free?
Would you unchain me?
I would give anything
to be with you again
If I can change my life,
Will you be there to help
and to unchain me?
Are you here
To rescue me?
Would you be there
And unchain me?
If we could
Go back and change the past
Would we then have a chance
and could we make it last?
I would give anything
to be with you again
If I would change my life,
Will you be there to help
and to unchain
me?

We were wondering what a combination of folk and orchestral instruments could sound like, and Qu's Marsh, as an oddball track for an oddball group of characters, was inspiring with its melodic material and the challenge to translate it into a fun arrangement. Things got a bit out of hand while arranging, but if you were ever curious what kind of adventures and epic stories could await you whilst catching frogs in the marsh, well, this might just be the track for you.

Another track for Pixel Mixer’s Final Fantasy 9 tribute album. I love the Melodies of Life track from the OST, and Crossing Those Hills has such a strong connection to Melodies of Life that I just _had_ to claim it. The source track is quite a chill track, and at the time MENU (materiacollective.bandcamp.com/album/menu-an-homage-to-game-title-themes), the first Materia Collective album I did a track on was just released. Out of that album, I thoroughly enjoyed both Glenntai’s and Peter Jones’ tracks on those album, both very chill with long chords and filtered drums, and that served as an inspiration for sure.
As (fortunately) usual for me, the writing process was energetic, inspired and quick, and the bulk of the arrangement was finished in just a few hours. In the first sketch I had an acoustic guitar part (backed up with a piano drowning in ValhallaShimmer for that nice, dreamy feel), but I felt the track needed another lead instrument. I already wanted to ask fellow PM member Cecil (GuitarSVD) to replace my sampled guitar with some real guitar, and once I recalled that he also plays the erhu, that seemed an interesting and suitable choice. Granted, it’s a bit of an unusual instrument in this kind of setting, but you will never know if it works until you try :)
Early on, I also thought this kind of track would work really well with some sparse vocals. I again managed to bribe Natalya (Earth Kid) into doing some vocals, so that was a good excuse to write some nice lyrics and harmonies. I felt that the vocal parts needed a bit more bottom end to it, so I recorded some backing vocals myself to fill up the soundscape some more.
It’s one of my less complex tracks, but I am really pleased with how it turned out. Kudos to Nat and Cecil for agreeing to perform on it early on and help bringing it to life; it always makes arranging a lot easier if you know what instruments you will be writing for. Enjoy!

Near the end of the production process of Pixel Mixer's Final Fantasy 9 tribute album, "A Place To Call Home" became free to be claimed again. Because it's such an iconic track, it meant that it needed to be done quickly or it would delay the entire album.
As luck would have it, I was immediately inspired to do something with it despite a crazily busy schedule. Years ago, I already attempted a reggae remix for another track and I thought it would provide a nice foundation for this piece. Because the source track is pretty short, I didn't want to make the same mistake I did with the earlier reggae track (it was too repetitive) and early on decided I wanted to include some vocals to break things up a bit. Inspired by the title (that I came up with early for a chance), I thought it'd be nice to have some of the main characters tell us why their home place is the best, a bit like a rap battle but without the rap.
I was lucky to find some fellow Pixel Mixer QCT members (they evaluate and accept the tracks for the album) willing to try their hand at some voice acting. Rich provided the voice of Zidane, with a nice amount of swagger and nonchalance to it. Cecil signed on for a confused Steiner, and when I was a bit stuck finding a voice for Vivi (who in the game is a 9 year old kid), he suggested his daughter Kathyrn for the part. Finally OCR regulars Earth Kid provided a nice sassy Garnet, and Cyril did a great job glueing it all together with his over-the-top performance as the announcer (a last minute addition but much needed role).
On the instrument side of things, I was happy to feature a number of real instruments again. Regular collaborator John Stacy was able to help out with the brass section again, and Cyril laid down the foundation on the bass. Tibone recorded most of the guitar parts, while I recorded myself on recorders and kalimba and did the simple guitar skanks.
All in all this was a nicely inspired and creative track again, with lots of people involved. Maybe some people would even consider it to be a bit of a joke track because of the genre and the voice acting. While reggae is a bit of an odd genre for a game remix, and spoken word is a bit... divisive, I think we at least succeeded in making a memorable - if not enjoyable - track. Kudos for all the collaborators for stepping in and delivering on short notice, because without them this crazy experiment wouldn't exist!
Lyrics:
Announcer
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to today's show! And tonight, our special guests will tell us why their home on Gaia is so special. Let's get started with... Vivi!
Vivi
Now, let me tell you something...
I have been looking for a place to call home for a long time. I felt lost and afraid, coz I didn't know where I came from.
So, when I found my kin at the Black Mage village, it was so cool to learn that we all have lots riddim in us. You'll never see more riddim than at our place!
Announcer
Steiner?!? Uhh... what are you doing here?
Steiner
What on earth is this 'riddim' thing everyone is talking about?
Why will nobody tell me?
And can somebody please tell me why this music makes me want to move?
Announcer
And now, my eager audience, I have the honor to present to you... her royal highness, princess Garnet!
Garnet
Hey guys, listen up! I don't remember the home I was born in. The country I grew up in was destroyed.
But it’s my country now. So we rebuilt it, and better than ever before!
It's totally the best and we got riddim in spades... surely, there ain't no riddim like at my place!
Announcer
And the moment you've all been waiting for, our final guest, here's Zidane!
Zidane
Well, that's all fine 'n dandy, but you are wrong.
Obviously!
Trust me, as a guy who grew up in a world that was not my own, I know what I'm talking about.
One day, you will realize that "home is where the heart is". And my home is with my buddies! They all got dem riddim. So... don't tell me there ain't no riddim like at my place!

Ladies and gentleman, thank you for coming to today's show. We wish you a pleasant night. Sleep well, and goodbye!

Uhh...ops, I did something weird? I ended up remixing one of my own remixes.
I was working on a remix of Chrono Cross’ track Reminiscence for the Chronopolis remix album and waiting for some recordings to come in so I could finish the track. During some random Youtube watching, I stumbled upon a Synthwave track in the style of The Midnight, suddenly got very inspired, and was wondering if I could do something similar. Fortunately I already had some vocals that Joy recorded for my original remix, so it was a great time to see if these vocals would work in this alternative version too. Turns out it did work pretty well, even though I did have to ask Joy to re-record due to the slower tempo.
To me, this alternative remix goes hand in hand with the other version, each using the same source and the same lyrics, but each with their own feeling and mood. All in all this was a really interesting experiment, and I love what came out of it. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do :)
Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
I'm drifting so far away
I really think I'm astray
All so foreign, yet familiar to me
Where did I go? Where could you be?
[Chorus]
In this world, I am alone
And I miss you, now that you are gone
But if fate could be rearranged
You'd be here, my world forever changed
[x7]
If I could...
[Bridge]
I'm wandering
So aimlessly
I'm wishing for another world
[Verse 2]
You found me, and I found you
Together, we will pull through
Though I wonder, if you never found me
Where would you go? And where would I be?
[Chorus]
Lost in time and lost in space
Someone else then stole what was your place
But I think, if my fate could change
You would be forever here with me
If I could...
If I could...

At the very end of the Chrono Cross project, the album director hinted that he could use another track for the faster disc of the album. As it happened, Earth Kid and I had been brainstorming on Discord about a possible collab, where we could combine together her folk sounds with the electronic world. This seemed like an excellent excuse to give it a shot! After some discussion we settled on a rough workflow, with me focusing on arrangement, percussion and bass and electronic sounds in general, and her on live performances on her folk instruments and overall mixing, and both of us chipping in where needed.
The track started off with a bare bones piano arrangement from Earth Kid that I messed around with. There was a bit of Marbule in there in 4/4 that instantly inspired me to add some Drum & Bass vibes to it, but the other parts were in different time signatures that I struggled to get working in a good way with electronic stuff. After some discussion and experimentation, I finally settled on putting it all in 4/4, but with some swing applied as a nod to the original 6/8 and 2/2 time signatures. From there the arrangement got fleshed out rather quickly, and when Earth Kid replaced my scratch midi with her arsenal of instrumental and vocal performances, the track really came to life. With the swing applied to the track, it has some bouncy goodness to it that I really dig, and with the interesting contrast between the folk and electronic elements as well as an arrangement that keeps things moving, I am hoping you will be bobbing your head to the song as much as we did!

Originally I wanted to remix "Voyage - Home World" for OCR's Chronopolis album, but when I finally was able to sit down and give it a go, I struggled to come up with something that would do this piece justice and still make it different enough. When I checked out the rest of the OST, I stumbled upon "Reminiscing" and that track immediately resonated with me, since I'm a sucker for these kind of slow, melancholic tracks.
I thought the source material would work well as a vocal ballad, and that of course means vocals. I just knew that Joy would have the perfect voice for this, and listening back to the track, she definitely doesn't disappoint! Since she's a big fan of Chrono Cross too, it made co-writing the lyrics a breeze and also a lot of fun.
I also knew quite soon in the process that I wanted a live performed solo part, but couldn't quite decide if I wanted a violin solo or a saxophone solo. When Brad, the album director, mentioned he plays saxophone, I asked him to give it a shot, and he came up with a kick ass solo. However, I couldn't quite ignore the idea that violin would sound great on this track too, so I wrote some interesting, soaring lines to accompany and compliment the vocals. It already sounded pretty good with the samples I used, but I asked Trev if he could kick it up a notch, and he delivered a fabulous performance that really makes the violin sing.
Dig it. Hope you do too.

I completely missed the Undertale hype train from a few years ago (also somewhat intentionally), but Undertale’s music is too good to ignore. So when there was a free Undertale slot on the Indie Games v2 tribute album over at the Pixel Mixers community, it felt like too good an opportunity to pass up.
Hopes and Dreams is one of my favorite tracks from Undertale for its upbeat and optimistic vibe and just plain catchy melody. Since I’ve been looking for an excuse to try my hand at a Nightwish-esque, that meant operatic female vocals. Fortunately one-woman choir Psamathes, a Pixel Mixers regular, was immediately interested to do some symphonic metal, so I got to arranging. As far as the arrangement goes, the source track is catchy but also quite repetitive, so I had to be creative. Fortunately there was enough material to create a verse and chorus section as well as a bridge part. To spice it up, I wrote a riff + chant section quite heavily inspired by a part of the source (even though I completely forgot from where by now), added a solo section and threw in some (intentionally keyboard-ey/ROMpler-ey sounding) orchestral sounds for that symphonic feel.
No symphonic metal without guitars, and while I liked my Shreddage 2 midi riffs well enough to blend them in too, I was happy to work with jmabate, who provided the lead and rhythm guitars and threw in an extra tasty solo bit as well as a few harmonies at the end to boot. Bass was provided by Kalu4ii Plays, another PM community member, and provides the rhythm section together with some pretty layered drums courtesy of Logic Pro’s Drummer (and heavily edited by yours truly).
After the usual mixing hell (it turned out to be one of these high track count monsters with too many layers) it turned out not quite as Nightwish-esque as I originally planned, but I still feel it’s a great homage to Undertale, to symphonic rock/metal in general and it has plenty of good vibes and power. All of this was immensely helped by the fantastic singing from Psamathes and the extra oomph provided by the performances from jmabate and Kalu4ii and I can't thank them enough for helping the track come to life!

Have the strength
to believe
Guided by
Your Hopes and Dreams
I am stuck
In dark surroundings,
Lost and dazed,
Feels like I'm drowning
Thinking back,
As I was falling
Down this void,
My ears still roaring
Can I get up,
From this nightmare?
Won't give up,
Give in to despair
'Cause the dreams
And hopes inside me
Fill my heart with
determination
(I) find the strength
to believe
Guided by
My Hopes and Dreams
Determined to
Find a way
My heart won't
Lead me astray
Feeling lost and helpless,
I'm so scared...
I don't know how I will
Get out of this mess.
But when I remember
All my dreams
I feel stronger,
I know I can't give up
Just yet
Trust your
Hopes and Dreams
(4x)
I am struggling,
'cause beliefs,
They're causing conflict
Fuelled by passion
Clashing,
Now my friends are hurting,
I just want to end this fighting.
Can I find a way
To stop this?
Bring back peace
To all around me?
Won't give up,
To save my friends
They're in the hopes and dreams
That guide me
Trust your
Hopes and Dreams
(4x)
The struggles of my past,
They have shaped me
They made me strong,
And showed me what I could be
My doubts are gone,
A thing of yesterday,
'Cause now I know
Nothing can stand in my way!
(I) find the strength
to believe
Guided by
My Hopes and Dreams
Determined to
Find a way
My heart won't
Lead me astray
Determination,
It will fill our hearts
Nothing can stop us,
Or can break us apart
Trust the power of your
Hopes and
of your Dreams

Even though Final Fantasy XIII isn't a universally loved game, the music is actually pretty great. I wanted to try my hand at a chamber orchestra arrangement with female vocals of the main theme and see if I could add some extra life, delicacy and emotion to it. Couldn't resist adding a sneaky reference to the FFXIII battle music, because that track is so good!
Lyrics:
Make my wish come true, let darkness slip aside
Hiding all our hope, mocking what we treasure
Battles we can win, if we believe our souls
Hang in through the dark night
Hang in for the light... till dawn
Cause Fate will not leave you, hate will not heal you
Promise to me, peace shall flow everywhere
Make my wish come true, let darkness fade to light
Show me it’s not over, show me there’s still hope
Make my wish come true, let darkness fade to light
Show me there's still hope, show me it's not over
Battles we can win, our struggle lies within
Will we live to meet them?
Will we live to greet... the dawn?

When Arcadia Legends album directors Darkflamewolf and Modus asked me if I was interested in remixing the airship theme of the game, I initially said no because of time constraints. When they didn’t give up and later shared a music clip where elements of each continent in the game were featured in the song, I started thinking it would be nice to incorporate these continent themes more completely than as just mere fly-by fragments. Little did I know that this ultimately would turn into a monster of a project with a runtime of over 13 minutes that would take me 8 months to complete, include collaborations from 10 performers, eat up close to 160 tracks in my DAW and give me a project file too big for my computer to actually handle. Ouch.
Given that this track contains not only the airship theme but also all the different continents in the game that meant there was a lot of music to work with. With so many different types of music, making things sound cohesive was definitely a concern. I was a bit hesitant at first to give this the orchestral treatment, given that the OST is fully orchestral too. I initially thought that it would be difficult to make this track different enough from the source material. After some more deliberation however, I quickly came to the conclusion that an orchestral track would be the only way I could actually pull this off in a consistent manner. With all the different tempos and time signatures, making things flow and transition well between the different parts without sounding too much like a medley was a tricky challenge, but I think it turned out pretty well. I also learned a lot of orchestrational and compositional things that I hope to apply in a new orchestral project.
I am immensely grateful for all the talented performers who were willing to give this a shot and join me on this crazy journey. A big shout out to Damian, Doug, Earth Kid, Gregory, Jay, John, Kaedrin, Michael, Lauren and Ryan; you really helped making this track come alive!
Please, sit back and take a trip back to the lands of Arcadia. Hope you enjoy the journey as much as I did!

When I discovered the Skies of Arcadia album project over on OverClocked ReMix (http://arcadia.ocremix.org), I was thrilled. I have a lot of good memories of the game from my Dreamcast days and since the album is for an RPG I actually played and enjoyed a lot I couldn't not write a track. Browsing through the OST I stumbled upon the Eastern Air Pirates track, which instantly gave me an Ennio Morricone vibe. Since I've always wanted to create a spaghetti western style track, it was too good to pass up. Of course that means using all the classic Morricone sounds like the twangy guitar (courtesy of Aster), the harmonica (courtesy of Furilas), the soaring soprano vocals (courtesy of Lauren the Flute) and of course the whistling (courtesy of yours truly).
Creating the spaghetti western vibe came so easy that it felt like cheating, but the flow of the track, the incorporation of Yafutoma Dawn and overall production took considerably more work. Still, I am very happy with (and proud of) the end result and am very grateful to my collaborators that made the Western vibe come really alive and made the track great. Thanks a lot guys, onwards we ride. Yeehaa!

I finished my first contribution to the Hometown Heroes album (http://hometown.ocremix.org) fairly quickly, and despite a crazy busy schedule, I couldn’t help but do another track, simply because I like the concept so much. The aforementioned crazy schedule make a simpler track a necessity, and I’ve always wanted to try my hand at some bossa nova, for the simple reason of not having made a bossa nova track before.
I stumbled upon the first village track from Falcom’s Legend of Heroes 3: Song of the Ocean, a game I played a lot on my PSP. Since the game music was catchy and I’m a long time fan of Falcom's music, it was an easy choice and the arrangement came together quickly.
I always knew I wanted live performances for the lead instruments in this track. I quickly settled on flute to take the lead in this track, but I also wanted another lead instrument, something that could interplay with and complement the flute part. After some deliberation I felt a saxophone would fit the bill just perfectly and would work great in the overall soundscape. As luck would have it, I knew exactly who would be able to deliver a great performance and on short notice. After reaching out to Gregory (GameroftheWinds) and Brad (prophetic music) to see if they would be game, they immediately liked the concept and were on board. They both delivered great performances, and their parts really shine in the otherwise sparse track. It was also a great excuse to record myself on kalimba and shakers, because live recordings are better and more fun than midi.
All in all I really like how it came out, despite it being a pretty simple song. Can’t help but chill out after listening to it, and to me it definitely invokes the warm, fuzzy, relaxed feelings of home.

Another remix I reanimated for the Ys 30th anniversary album (melodysandharmonys.bandcamp.com/album/melodys-and-harmonys). Originally I did this arrangement together with fellow MSX composer Meits for a competition on msx.org (msx.org/news/challenges/en/gmc-17-wanderers-ys-feenas-premonition-meits-jorito), but because we were so late to sign up, it was very rushed, and frankly not very good.
I always wanted to revisit this arrangement, because I felt it had potential, and the Ys album was a good excuse to finally give it the treatment it deserved. I set out with overhauling the piano, thoroughly changing the backing track/left hand part, adding variations and overall fixing a lot of timing and pedal issues as well as going for an overall more mellow, dreamy sound.
In the original compo version, the piano was overpowering the entire mix, to the point of sounding distorted, and the backing parts were hard to notice. That part also got some serious work, with improved dynamics, some new parts, a few extra layers and some subtle added percussion. Overall I think it turned out well, and it finally creates this dynamic, symphonic opening prelude feel that was lacking in the initial attempt.
Big shoutout to Meits for the original piano parts that I used for this track. It gave a good starting point, but I think I left no note untouched while fitting it to the new arrangement. Sorry, buddy ;)

When the OCReMix album project "Hometown Heroes" got its inception, many moons ago, I immediately jumped in, since I am a sucker for RPGs and their music. Sadly, the album got a few false starts, and the 2 tracks I originally wrote for it (an arrangement of Ys 3 "Town of Redmont" and one of Dragon Slayer 6's "Town") got repurposed since, ending up on OCReMix and on another album.
When the album project got restarted in May 2018, I was immediately intrigued again. It also meant that I had to find another track to remix, since my original tracks were already released. After some deliberation, I thought it would be great to pay homage to the Suikoden series again, an -in my opinion- underrated RPG series with great (and different) music.
I stumbled upon the Chisha town theme early on and felt it would be a good tune to turn into a chill-out electronic track with vocals - quite heavily inspired by La Felix' track "Take the Night" and some Zircon tracks. The catchy, repetitive main part got repurposed for the chorus, while the second violin part (which starts at 1:07 in the source track) made for the main verse parts, as well as the calmer bridge part (where it plays at half speed). Because the lead material from the source is quite busy and hard to fit in a slower track like this, I opted to essentially split it in 2 parts; the first part (the call) as a vocal, and the second part (the response) in the flutes. Combined with the song structure -which has quite some breaks and transitions in there) I think it turned out rather well.
As in basically any other track, not being a good singer, I had to find somebody to collab with. Fortunately I've worked with Earth Kid a few times before, and she was totally up for it. She did the bulk of the lyrics and the vocals, with me making suggestions and additions in the background for both lyrics and vocals. All in all I am really pleased with how it turned out, and I'm glad I managed to find enough time to actually make it and contribute to the album. Hope it feels like home again ;)
Lyrics:
Verse 1
Waking up from a dream
Lost memories coming back to me
On endless road, I go alone
From place to place, longing for home
Chorus
Home again
Where I want to be
Always wandering
Until I find the way
Home again
Where I can be free
Always dreaming
Until I am home again
Spoken Word
Where is home anyway?
Is it someplace familiar,
or someplace unknown?
Well, I heard this once-
and it might be true-
that home is with you
wherever you go.
Bridge 1
Twilight fades,
and I roam
To seek the place
I call my home
Verse 2
City streets, guiding me
Crowds in the way
Nameless people move
Like ticking clocks, they step in time
As night descends, we fall in line
Chorus x2
Home again
Where I want to be
Always wandering
Until I find the way
Home again
Where I can be free
Always dreaming
Until I am home again
Bridge 2
Waking up
to the dawn,
I've found the place
where I belong

This is a track I started for the OCReMix Hometown Heroes album that unfortunately got cancelled. I originally started this arrangement mid 2015, but it wasn’t fully finished yet and was lying unused until album director preta recruited for an Ys 30th anniversary album. That was a good reason to finally dust off my WIP and finish it.
Originally I tried making an Italo remix of the town of Redmont music, but when I showed it to fellow Italo/Synthwave enthusiast Sir_Nuts many moons ago, he pointed out "it’s a cool arrangement, but the sounds are not Italo". Fast forward 2 years, I tried my hand at synthwave in stead of Italo, did a lot of work on production, changed and layered lots of instruments, completely overhauled the mixing and finally came up with a title. Probably took me longer than coming up with the arrangement in the first place :)
In a bout of inspiration I tried swapping the synth part that originally played the "Boy’s Got Wings" part with a sampled guitar, and that sounded rather good. So I asked around if there were any people on the Ys album project that would be able to record the guitar for me. OCR regular HeavenWraith was able to do just that, and on rather short notice. That part where "Boy’s Got Wings" plays is my favorite part of the song, both because of the cool melody of the source track that I was able to blend with the Redmont theme and of the awesome guitar work :)
As for the "lyrics", they are mostly there as ornaments and notably silly and incomprehensible. Here they are:
Neon Skylines
Sunset Heroes
New Adventures
Hitpoints Zero
Neon Skylines
Sunset Heroes
Town of Redmont
(Sunset Heroes)
(2x)
Sunset Heroes
Glad that I had a good excuse to dust off this arrangement and finish it properly!

Somewhere March 2018 I stumbled upon this (relatively) new VGM community called Pixel Mixers. I just wrapped up some tracks and wanted to start something new. Turns out Pixel Mixers was in the middle of a Xenogears 20th anniversary tribute album. I already did another track for the album (youtube.com/watch?v=2WJr_eVmvfQ) but had a bit of time and motivation.
Going over the available tracks, I found 'Gathering Stars in the Night Sky' was still available. While the source track is quite a serious and reminiscing sounding track, I decided to do something different with it, speeding it up and turning it into chiptune. Because of the album criteria to have at least 2 guest collaborators on the track, it did stray from pure chiptune quite quickly, though. I thought chiptune + slap bass would sound interesting, so I asked around and learned that Cyril the Wolf is an accomplished bass player willing to lay down the slap. I originally wanted to try and get an electric piano like a Wurly or a Rhodes. SJTR5, the second collaborator, originally started writing the solo part on FM type sounds though, and while it wasn't quite what I had in mind, I found that layering multiple sounds to get an in-between kind of vibe worked pretty well.
All in all it turned out as a quick 'n fun li'l tune that doesn't take life and itself too serious. Not bad for a bonus track ;)
