This week, Brian is back to give a guide on the different choices you should make to determine the best powdercoat for your application.
Powdercoat is a great finishing option because its durable and will make your parts look excellent. There are different powdercoat styles that will work better for certain applications. Powdercoat texture can be gloss, matte and Sandtex. The powdercoat might be polyester or epoxy. And there are some important things to keep in mind.

This week, Chris is here to help you understand material flatness when it comes to using CNC Machining to manufacture your design.
Customers sometimes ask us about material flatness, or specify flatness on their design files when they come to us for a price quote. Flatness is a measure of a surface’s form. You would measure the deviation from the material being a perfectly flat surface. You’ll often see flatness denoted as a symbol of geometric dimensioning and tolerance, also known at GD&T. In this case, flatness indicates a range of a tolerance zone of two parallel planes either side of a surface.

This week, Carter is making his Proto Tech Tip debut to talk about fastening your sheet metal design using rivets.
Rivets permanently fasten two metal parts together through a concentric hole. We have other fastening methods here at Protocase – welding and self-clinching fasteners. However, rivets are a much more economical fastening choice than welding, because it’s faster and simpler. But, in terms of being able to withstand high amounts of force, rivets are strong, but welding is far more durable.

Due to our sheet metal manufacturing constraints, we are not always able to create your designs out of one singular piece of sheet metal. Often, they need to be taken apart and perhaps welded or fastened together. This is where this little trick of notching and tabbing comes into handy.
This technique is used to join multiple parts together so that they only fit together the correct way. Check out the video to see an example.

This week, Chris is back to talk about heat-set inserts for your 3D printed parts and enclosures.
For 3D printing, we just started stocking heat-set inserts, which are small metal tubes that are threaded on the inside and knurled on the outside. These inserts add threads to a 3D printed part so that you can install bolts and screws. Essentially, with heat-set inserts, you are creating a really strongly fastened 3D printed part or enclosure that can be easily assembled and disassembled.

We aim to make your life easier when it comes to designing and ordering your custom parts. There are multiple methods of payment available once your order is being processed. We have three options for pre-payment, (which means you pay for the order before it ships from our facilities) and they include: credit card, pay by check and electronic wire transfer.
We have another option for paying after your order has shipped. This is called Terms. Basically, it means we will ship your order as soon as it is manufactured and will send you an invoice. This is for customers who have applied for terms using our NET30 application.

After nearly 3 years since the last in-person University Rover Challenge Finals event, the stage has been set for 36 teams from 10 different countries to compete. This year, each team competed in 4 different tasks to see who would be crowned the winner of URC 2022.
After 3 days of tasks, the competition crowned its new champion, the Michigan Mars Rover Team from the University of Michigan in the United States!
First Place - Michigan Mars Rover Team (University of Michigan, USA) - 388.97 points
Second Place - Monash Nova Rover (Monash University, AUS) - 380.55 points

In this week's video, Jordan is back to talk about a new stocked aluminum option called MIC-6.
MIC-6 is an alloy of aluminum that is CAST and STRESS RELIEVED when the stock is manufactured. Common aluminum alloys, like the 5052 or 6061 bar and sheet material (that we stock), are either DRAWN or ROLLED when the stock is manufactured. The method of manufacturing these types of metals are important because it will determine the metals' structural integrity.
Because MIC-6 is cast and stress relieved, the internal stresses in the material become mis-aligned, meaning removing them from one side does not cause a large imbalance in the internal stresses, thus decreasing the chances of warping.

In this week's video, Arnoldo is back to talk about new resolution options that we are offering with our Digital Printing process.
Digital printing is a big part of our one-stop custom manufacturing facility. It’s an excellent option for the graphics on your custom parts because it is incredibly flexible, offers the full spectrum of CMYK colors and can achieve highly complex graphics with overlapping colors.
Now, you can select between our standard resolution (720 dpi) and our premium resolution (1440 dpi). Both options have their benefits for labelling and complex graphics. Check out this week's video to find out when each option should ideally be used.

In this week's video, Chris is back to talk about the minimum center to the edge distance when placing fasteners in your design.
Every self-clinching fastener – or PEM, as they’re often called, comes with a set of constraints, as most industrial fasteners do. These constraints ensure that the fasteners get installed properly, and hold true to their specifications, including things like torque out and push out resistance.
One of these major constraints is the minimum center to edge distance. If you follow the minimum distance to edge value outlined in your specific fastener spec sheet, you will prevent the risk of your fastener falling out after assembly.

In this week's video, Cody talks about using the trim side bends feature when designing inside SolidWorks.
Trim bends is a feature available within your sheet metal options in SolidWorks. This tool is primarily used to remove any extra material in your neighboring bends. A situation where you would use this is when you are trying to pull an edge flange off of a corner that has an already existing adjacent flange. Having this feature checked inside SolidWorks makes your design look better aesthetically, and ensures proper functionality.

Radii and chamfers serve many purposes in a machined part. Sometimes, these are used as a defined edge break. Other times, chamfers and radii create necessary geometry for clearances or fitment of mating parts.

Just as with our E-Drawings for the CAD designs themselves, your graphics – meaning the placement, size and more specs for the graphics on your design – need to be carefully reviewed and approved before your design can be fully finished with your desired graphics.
Approving your graphics inside the Protocase My Account portal will automatically signal to our graphics team that your order can be processed, which will then advise our production stations that your parts are ready to have graphics applied.
