Influence comes from everywhere, and we are all susceptible to it. There is a stat floating around that says the average person is exposed to 10,000 ads per day - and while the number has mostly been debunked, I think that the *essence* of what it's saying is still valid.
When you're inundated with products at points during the day when you're more receptive. I used to think gadgets were how problems got solved, and that made me on a constant hunt for the perfect gadget!

Before, when I shopped - I absolutely would try and be rational and ask myself this question. But upon reflection, I realized my main emphasis was on the word "Should". Framing it a 'should' question primed me for the possibility of getting a thing I wanted regardless of any real reason that related to the object, my life, or whether or not "buying" was the thing I should be doing. "Should" I - pretty much rested on: Do I want it? Do I have enough money?....and that's how I ended up with a closet full of clothes I've barely worn, handbags that don't fit my things, and countless trinkets, gadgets and doo-dads THAT ALL USED TO BE MONEY 🫠
This is obviously very elementary, very basic - and I'm sure going to be lacking or flawed. I just try to share what has helped me in hopes that it may help someone else out there. I know how hard it is to beat compulsive shopping, especially if it's the only way you know ❤️
#nobuy #consumerism #shoppingaddiction
Let's re-examine the idea that's taken over about the clothes you wear declaring who you are to the ✨wOrLd✨, because I have a couple of questions:
1. What about yourself are you explaining to the world?
2. Who is supposed to receive this message?
3. what are they supposed to do with the information once received?
and 4. What would compel anyone to engage in this exercise, specifically for the purpose of communicating to others about themselves?...like why?
I'm admitting it - I don't get it. And this is another reason that the fashion space has completely lost me. Let me know what you think!
BTW this is the creator here on Youtube that I admire so much youtube.com/@Mallory-heart/featured @Mallory-heart
Definitely not how I would choose to dress myself, but listening to her think out her choices and play with tones and textures and proportions just really makes in my head. It's something I just don't see today, at least not in any way I can recognize, and for me - that was ALL of the fun.
I've learned that in order to stop shopping for clothing shoes and purses, I had to stop focusing my recreational attention on clothing shoes and purses! Enter: reading 🌈✨
As a part of this project of healing myself out of shopping addiction and trying to uncover how we all got to this place...I almost inadvertently fell into the same habits 🙈
Overconsumption is truly waiting in the wings everywhere we go, we just have to be mindful about our objectives! Is my goal to learn about the history of modern consumerism, or to have an ~✨aEsThEtIc✨~ bookshelf? Are books for discovering new perspectives and ideas? Or, are they decorative trinkets?
If the point is what's inside, then the wrapper is not so important... Maybe, don't value the book for it's cover?

*** Friendly reminder, the clips I added into this video are in NO WAY meant to call out or bash the original creators. They are to compare their videos to my own behavior, so I recognize when I'm doing the same thing in other places!
Even though I no longer live — or even want — my old lifestyle, I found myself shopping for it out of habit, highlighting how deeply rooted overconsumption and identity-based spending can be. I'm talking today about why we purchase clothes, aesthetics, and even “experiences” for a life we don’t actually have, and how the popular idea of “experiences over things” can still keep us trapped in transactional thinking about happiness. If you’re navigating shopping addiction recovery, a no buy or low buy journey, struggling with compulsive spending, or questioning your relationship with consumerism and identity, this honest reflection may resonate with you!
And - while I was tempted, I prevailed!! ☺️
#shoppingaddiction #nobuy
In this video, I talk openly about my ongoing process of deradicalization and de-influencing, and how intentionally stepping away from extreme consumer habits has pushed me into entirely new content spaces. I’ve had to change a lot over the last few years—not because I was “weak” or “gullible,” but because I’m human. I’ve spent real time unpacking why I was engaging in certain behaviors around shopping, spending, and self-presentation, especially within a hyper-consumerist, hyper-capitalist environment that shapes all of us.
This isn’t a confessional or an attempt to shame myself for past choices. It’s about relatability, nuance, and recognizing shared patterns. By comparing things that don’t look similar on the surface—luxury fashion, fast fashion, Buy Now Pay Later, no-buy years, alcohol spending—we can start to see the common threads underneath.
I’ve been genuinely fascinated by concepts from cult deprogramming, and how belief systems (especially around money, identity, and consumption) are formed, reinforced, and eventually questioned. I'm reflecting on my experience with a failed no-buy year, fast fashion vs. natural fabrics, microplastics, synthetic textiles, designer brands, BNPL, and lifestyle inflation—without moral absolutism. I’m not chasing purity or perfection! The goal is moderation, grace, and empathy. I'm just doing my best, and we all can aim for better!! I was extreme on one end for most of my life, tried the opposite extreme to understand lack, and now I’m intentionally working in the middle, with more awareness and less shame.
If you’re interested in de-influencing content, mindful consumption, recovering from shopping addiction tendencies, questioning luxury culture, or exploring how consumerism intersects with identity, this video is for you.
**DISCLAIMER** I am not trained or formally educated - PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE seek professional help and care if you need it and it's available. Take care of yourself ❤️
Instead of fashion, I’m in my kitchen — sorting through gadgets and home items I accumulated during a period of shopping addiction. These weren’t bought out of need or utility, but out of impulse, comfort, and the promise that this one thing might solve a problem in my life
Decluttering this space feels like confronting a quieter side of overconsumption — the things that live behind cabinet doors, the purchases no one sees on Instagram, the stuff that piles up when shopping becomes emotional instead of intentional.
This isn’t a how-to, a minimalism guide, or advice. It’s simply an honest look at what I’m letting go of, and what I’m learning in the process.
If you’re used to seeing me talk about clothes and style, consider this the same conversation — just translated into a different room of the house.

When I started my No Buy challenge last year, I started with one simple question: “Why are we all doing this?” So, I spent all year reading books to better understand consumerism and compulsive shopping.
I dug in deeply to the topics of fashion, marketing, psychology, history, sociology, addiction, economics, and philosophy in an effort to understand: why shopping addiction is so common, how marketing influences buying behavior, why we attach identity to things, and how to BREAK FREE from consumerism once and for all!
….and I have an obnoxiously long reading list to show for it!!!! &&& you can find a full list of these books on my Bookshop page bookshop.org/lists/why-are-we-impulse-shopping (See below to find secondhand an save 🥰 )

I have lived through a world encompassing shopping addiction, and I decided to take this past year to finally get it under control. I made a few strict rules, but instead of just living through spreadsheets and budgeting - I decided to focus on my 'why's. Why I overspent, why I obsessed about products and purchases, and how I can reach moderation and mindful spending in the future. These are some of the ideas that kept me together in the past year.

Super happy to report that No Buy 2025 was a SUCCESS! These are not firm rules to go forward bc tbh I'm kind of undecided - but they are plans, ideas, and frameworks that I'm thinking about as we move into a new year. Here are a list of books featured in today's video that have really helped open my eyes, and change my perspectives. Obviously check the availability of these books at your local library FIRST to borrow for free. However if you are interested in any of these titles - it would support me a bunch if you used my *affiliate links* and purchased through ebay. They're mostly used books and since they are older, they are often pretty cheap! However, I want to remind you: no obligation, no pressure, and DO NOT BUY if you are NOT BUYING at the moment =] I hope to do a video in the future discussing these books at length. Lmk if that is something you'd be interested in!

HANDBAGS ARE NOT RELIABLE FINANCIAL INVESTMENTS! This was my catch-phrase for years and here is some of my work to give advice on this front. Some of these videos may be old but by and large it still applies. Buy what you love and will use, sell it when that ceases to be the case. No graphs necessary.

Is anyone else troubled by the ways that consumerism has created new and hardened shopping holidays? Is this how they ruined Christmas a hundred years ago? 🥴
Anyway, I'm noticing a bizarre turn in the 'why' of buying in to this seasonality and... I think it's BS. We don't need it, and I think there's something super shady/creepy about manipulating people into seeking a cozy sense of nostalgia to sell dishes and soap dispensers to people who already have perfectly good dishes and soap dispensers!
This is WEIRD and I hate it. Please share your thoughts below
- weigh desire with reality.
- Figure out the end game of what it means to succeed or fail in this No Buy Year
- dispel some more of the mental gymnastics I used to rationalize shopping compulsively
- Try to find moderation?
Thanks as always for watching along on my journey away from hyper-consumerism, and please share any of your wins or fails

Here is a quote from the book referenced in this video. The Book is 'Hoodwinked: How marketers use the same tactics as cults" by Mara Einstein
"Truth Bias [the human tendency to believe others are being truthful, particularly when there's no reason to suspect otherwise] is particularly potent online. You choose people to follow, which, if you are a typical social media user, you will do for 151 minutes per day. You scroll quickly through the feeds, only half paying attention and rarely stopping to fact-check what you’re seeing. This is by design. Social Media technology pushes you to think fast - with your emotions, not slowly with your rational mind. As you scroll some more, you see the same “fact” again and again and again, and you find yourself starting to believe it...In short, psychology and technology work together to get you to accept what you see presented online.”
I honestly think the ways these apps function is hugely destructive to our culture and she goes on in this paragraph, to say that *this is how misinformation and disinformation spread* - BUT in relation to consumerism, it subtly reinforces the next product, the next fashion trend, and opens us up to buying in to things that we don't actually need.
I logged 18 months ago and my mind feels clear, I'm able to exercise critical thinking in a way that was almost lost - and for me, there's no going back.
...you should try it.
There are a ton of books I've read on this topic the one mentioned today was 'Hoodwinked: How marketers use the same tactics as cults" by Mara Einstein bookshop.org/p/books/hoodwinked-how-cult-marketing-tactics-left-us-anxious-broke-and-conned-mara-einstein/21546767?ean=9781493086153&next=t

I have turned over a new leaf, and am trying to forge a new path forward on this platform. Sharing affiliate links will not be a common practice going forward, however I realize the audience that this video may find and a lot of people out there are content with their shopping- I, in no way want to wag my fingers at someone else's joy. And unfortunately we live in a world that is only able to rationalize time spent, with how much money it can generate....more on this later.I intend to make a video discussing influencers and the ethics of affiliate linking in the future as well, please stay tuned!
Please remember, that there is nothing necessary that these bags provide, however, I anticipate that there may be questions about the bags featured - if you are truly interested, I invite you to watch the many dozens of reviews I’ve posted here on this platform (see playlist and direct links below) and you can find the affiliate links at the bottom of this description, as well as in the comments!

This is just a gentle reminder and example that WE CAN'T LET OUR CREDIT CARDS TRY TO SOLVE ALL OF OUR PROBLEMS.
Sometimes, the problems requires effort, or time, or care. If we let SPENDING solve the problem - we end up with CLUTTER.
This is a time where I have no interest in purchasing items I don't need, and the idea that a purchase in this time was going to contribute to further clutter
#shoppingaddiction #overconsumption #deinfluence
Let's face it - we're all more budget conscious these days, but I am not sold on the idea of just buying from less expensive brands like Coach, Marc Jacobs, Telfar, Tory Burch Kate Spade, etc. instead. Maybe we need to reconsider if we need to continually add items to our wardrobes in the first place

Today we're pondering another idea behind *why* we shop, and some of the justifications we use. Why does it make sense that for all of our hard work, the CEO of LVMH gets paid? No more of that in 2025!
Would love to hear your thoughts on this and other ideas around shopping and consumerism! What are some of your reasons to shop?
Headphones are by RayCon...a brand that advertises with influencers all the time. Pure coincidence that I bought them at the airport 3 years ago to replace another pair - for THE SAME EXACT REASON! They have emailed me in the past to collaborate but I have not worked with them...and from this video you can see how I feel about the product. (however, I will add that they have very good battery life!)

This year I'm deleting ANYTHING from my phone that is an impediment (or actively hostile) to my goals - and you should too
FitOn - FREE ~20 minute workouts right from your screen! (yoga, pilates, barre, cardio etc) - I like these bc they don't require any equipment (or shoes!)

Join me as I share my personal goals for a 2025 “No Buy” year—a mindful journey toward intentional living, financial freedom, and digital wellness. In this video, I outline my top strategies for cutting unnecessary spending, reducing consumption, and cultivating habits that truly add value. The most important change? Limiting screen time to reclaim focus, and improve mental health. Whether you're starting your own no-buy challenge, simplifying your lifestyle, or just curious about what a no-spend year looks like, this video offers inspiration and practical tips to help you reset and thrive in 2025.
I truly started this channel in an effort to help people make rational and informed choices when deciding to indulge in designer goods, but in doing so, I became my own enabler. I'm not sure exactly what the future holds here (like - Idk what our topics and chatter will be about from week to week, sometimes subject matter may be deep, sometimes vapid, other times babbly and non-sensical!) but the main purpose for me to equip myself (and you!) with the skills to truly funnel our resources toward areas where our well-being can flourish. No more shopping out of compulsion, and no more funding the things that mean us harm.
It means everything that you're with me on this **jOuRnEy** (I still hate that word!)

These are some of the reasons I would use rationalize buying more and more and more. This year I'm making an effort to not buy anything I don't need, while USING the items that I've spent the last 20-odd years buying. At the age of 34, I have accumulated SO MUCH, that I'm focusing my energy on using what I've already paid for!
Rather than immediately take to decluttering and shoving all of my things over to Goodwill (which I was in the practice of doing on a yearly basis...just to spend the year replacing all of those things with more cheaper clothing that I was also not going to wear) I wanted to first do the internal work of addressing *how* I got here, *why* I've been doing this for so long, and *what* exactly I was getting out of it!
Please share if you have any mindsets or habits you want to deprogram to add to this list!
Welcome to my No Buy Challenge! I am working through a shopping addiction and am in need of a HARD reset. I've spent the last 15 to 20 years shopping and I want this year to be the year that I actually USE the things I've already bought.
These are my rules, as well as what I've decided I am allowed to participate in going forward for the rest of the year. I actually started this in January, and I'm glad that I took Q1 to actually do it before I got on here and started talking about it.
We'll be talking about my no buy, but I also want to discuss consumerism and get to the bottom of why we're all doing this!!!!!
Make no mistake, I was never buying designer goods as a means of ‘showing off’ or ‘status signaling’ (…and to be clear - I don’t think most anyone that found *my* channel, or the true luxury community more broadly does either!). I genuinely was having fun with collecting these things - to the point where it felt like a part of my identity. But my passion, my zeal, my interest? Gone. Over the years, the market has changed, and I really don’t see that it has anything of substance left to offer. Just shoddy craftsmanship, high prices, and hideous, unflattering designs that give little utility.
After working in a small consignment boutique for years, I started this channel in 2016 because I saw how often consumers were being misled by brands, sales associates, and influencers. I interacted with women who bought Chanel Jumbos at full price - just be shocked later on that in resale they wouldn’t get back exactly what they had paid, saying to me, almost in whimpers: “But, they said it was an investment.” after losing thousands.
My aim here was to share practical knowledge and useful insights directly with consumers so they could make informed purchasing decisions and participate in luxury shopping on their own terms. Respecting anyone’s choice in their participation, while giving my best honest guidance, and potentially bursting a few bubbles in the process.
Unfortunately, I just don’t see an avenue for practical, rational, thoughtful, decision making in this space. As with many commercial industries, the incentive is to just keep everyone in a perpetual compulsive state of buying, and buying, and buying. And, I’m done.
I left the industry professionally in 2023, and it has taken some time and some serious self-reflection and solitude, but I’ve taken stock of my motivations here and it’s time for a hard reset. What I thought was a “love of fashion” - from the luxury resale arena, to shopping fast fashion for the perfect outfit - was just empty consumerism that kept my mind activated but wasted money and cluttered my space.
I sold off all of my Chanel bags, most of my LV, and remain with a couple (…lol 14) designer bags that I love the look and style of - but to be really honest, I don’t use them. And I haven’t really used them in *years.*
I really truly enjoyed this, but it’s time for me to move on. As mentioned, I want to stop shopping, and I want to change the direction of this online space to a place that questions this mindless consumerism and gets us (mostly me!) back to truly thinking about my needs, goals, preferences, and well-being over lining the pockets of businesses that literally mean us harm.
I hope you’ll join me.

While I have been very responsible and kept my priorities pretty straight, the #1 thing I wish I would have done sooner, is made the habit of automatically setting money aside in a more intentional way. I swear that this will never morph into a financial advice platform (also, NOT SPONSORED) an easy way to get started - if you haven't already - is to set up a weekly auto-draft that deposits into a savings account that collects interest.
My weekly savings number fluctuates anywhere from $25/wk to $100/wk (basic equivalent of a few weekly starbucks or UberEats orders, an amount I'm used to using and won't miss) depending on my situation. It's easy and you don't have to think about it & you can stop it at anytime!
...think of it like a subscription...to your future self.
