Greg Sandow - Weegee Photos (selections) MOVING CLASSICS 2023-08-13 | Anna Heller plays the selected compositions from the piano cycle "Weegee Photos" by American composer Greg Sandow. Watch some photos by Weegee youtube.com/watch?v=EYle0fixtR8 Weegee was a famous New York photographer. He was born Ascher Fellig in Zolochly, Ukraine. When his family emigrated to the US his given name was changed to Arthur. He took odd jobs including working as a street photographer of children with his pony, and as an assistant to a commercial photographer. In 1924 he was hired as a darkroom technician until 1935, when he became a freelance photographer.He worked at night and competed with the police to try and get to the scene of the crime. He would then sell his photos to tabloids and photo agencies. His photos were taken around Manhattan police headquarters. Most of his photos were taken with a basic press camera, a Crown Graflex which took film negatives that were sized at 4” x 5”. He would set the camera at f16 with a focus distance of 10 feet. This allowed Weegee to take all his photos in sharp focus. He used flash bulbs to light his photos. This gave his photos a dramatic, stark look to them. He knew what sold and looked for fights between people n the “social register”.If you are curious, here is a complete live recording of the piano cycle. He always speaks to his listeners with an intensity that is fervent and heralds of something higher. This higher is undoubtedly what is above the human world and at the same time is inherent in man: the divine nature. The composer says: 'I am very deeply rooted in nature. In the Nordic nature. Her influence permeates all of my music. Our nature is very versatile, we have four distinct seasons. The winter is very long, the summer very short and all the more longed for and beautiful. The transition periods are very dramatic.' As a kind of 'encore' for a performance of the Seasons cycle, Vasks wrote Vasara's vakara muzika - summer evening music. It is based on older sketches and is firmly anchored in tradition with its fixed metric structure. The composer says of this piece: 'It describes a still summer evening. The sun sets. Slowness. Memories of experiences rise. There is an increase in their volume. Towards the end you can hear in the style of a folk song: 'We have survived the time of tyranny and are still one identity'. Anton about his music: "In October 2012 I visited Rachmaninoffs grave. He is buried at Kensico Cemetery in the hamlet of Valhalla, half an hours ride from New York City. The cemetery is surrounded by picturesque mountains, well-tended houses, manicured lawns, and idyllic lakes and streams. Rachmaninoff is buried among actors, writers, politicians, military personnel, and business people, together with 'ordinary mortals' from all over the world Americans, Russians, Estonians, Chinese people ... A great musician who heard the universe as a powerful, boundless space resounding with the sounds of bells at once both tragic and triumphant, Rachmaninoff left Russia and became a part of a completely different world ... As I stood at his grave, I found this space resonating within me. When I returned home, I began writing a piano cycle. In this cycle, Rachmaninoff writes letters to postmodern composers. Rachmaninoff himself was an anti-modernist. He was not a revolutionary, was never 'ahead of his time', and was unafraid of looking old-fashioned. At first glance, it would seem that he bore no influence on late 20th/early 21st century composers. Nonetheless, his invisible, magical presence can in fact be heard in the music of some composers, including so-called 'contemporary classical' composers and rock musicians. Likewise when I hear Rachmaninoffs endless melodies that evolve from a very short motive of literally two or three notes, the word 'minimalism' all but rolls off my tongue. However, these connections are so subtle and not readily apparent that I wouldn't want to deaden them by invoking musicological terms. Rachmaninoff thus speaks to the composers that would come after him. Among composers of his time, he did not find a receptive audience unsurprising, perhaps, given the avant-garde experiments consuming the musical world at the time. The generation that followed Rachmaninoff essentially continued along the avant-garde path. However, Rachmaninoff looked even further ahead, taking sight of those with whom he desired to speak heart-to-heart. We have long been accustomed to the fact that both early music and classical music are used as the building materials for new compositions. Time runs quickly, and we are already at the next turn of the spiral. Music written only a short while ago becomes itself material for todays meditation. In this process, there are no quotations; there are only stylistic journeys in a time machine. In 1983 she received her Master’s Degree at the Gnesin Academy of Music in Moscow. From 1983 to 1986 she lived in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, where she worked for the Union of Bulgarian composers and the Bulgarian National Opera. From 1986 to 1989 she was in Moscow, working for the Russian Musical Society Board. Daniel Rojas (Australia), Arthur Barboza (Brazil), he is also currently part of the Germina.Cciones project with the Italian teacher Luca Belcastro. JuanCarlos's works have been performed in Peru, Brazil, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Mexico, France and USA. His works include piano music, chamber music, and orchestral music. Since 2009 he has been working at the Conservatory of Music of the Peruvian Union University, and also conducts the university's orchestra. Krzystof about this music: "During martial law in Poland in 1983, a provincial theater commissioned music from me for three short one-act plays – the role of music was limited to filling the stage pauses, during which the decorations were rearranged. This theater did not have much funds, but it cooperated with a good pianist, so I came up with four short pieces for solo piano – the first to start, the second and third as cut-scenes between scenes and the last at the end. Nothing came of this collaboration in the end, but I wrote these pieces and when Piotr Lachert, visiting Poland, asked me if I had something for piano, I remembered these four pieces. A version for solo piano of Coldplay's Yellow must ideally combine in practical fashion what lead guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, and voice do together. This arrangement is what I came up with when a friend asked me to play Yellow at his wedding. I transposed from the original B major key up to F major, which allows for a clearer texture at moments when the repeated chords get thick. The new key would be too high for Coldplay's lead singer Chris Martin's voice, but my version is not intended to be sung. There are several videos of the song in the internet - original and covers - where the singing voice stylistically floats over the accompaniment. Therefor the length of some notes, especially at the end of verses, may not coincide with the version known to the reader. Having recently completed his tenure as Eton College Composer in Residence, he is now studying towards a PhD at the University of York as a WRoCAH scholar.Viner’s music has received many accolades. In 2015, whilst an undergraduate at the University of York, his Bagatelle won the Ebor Organ Prize and was published by Banks in the Ebor Organ Album – Seven Pieces for Seven Decades. In 2016 Viner was awarded first prize in the Royal Northern Sinfonia’s Mozart’s of Tomorrow competition for Sleeping Gomatz, which the judging panel described as ‘ravishing’ and ‘constantly engaging’.After graduating from York with distinction, he was appointed Artist in Residence with Sage Gateshead’s Young Sinfonia and was also commissioned to write the closing piece for the Brundibár Arts Festival. In 2017, during his time in Oxford, Viner won first prize in William Howard’s Love Song Composing Competition with Herz an Herz, chosen from 152 compositions submitted anonymously from 61 countries. In 2017 he was also awarded The Henfrey Composition Prize for Bells Wrung, as well as the prestigious National Centre for Early Music Young Composers Award for Prayer from Afar, which was performed at Bridgewater Hall by the Tallis Scholars and broadcast on BBC Radio 3.In 2018 he was commissioned by Choir & Organ Magazine, Orchestra for the Earth, Borough New Music, Northern Praeclassica and pianist Jakob Fichert. In 2019 his music was performed by the Royal Tunbridge Wells Symphony Orchestra, the Chapel Choir of Selwyn College, the Gromoglasova Piano Duo and internationally renowned organist David Goode.
