Next thing he knew, a flick of the seal's head sent tentacles going 'thwack!' square into Mulinder's face.
"I'm not sure who got more of a surprise: the seal, the octopus or me," he wrote on Instagram where he posted footage of the monumental slap.
The video was first posted by Mulinder's friend Taiyo Masuda - both men are content creators for the GoPro brand, and were specifically on a kayaking tour to test out the company's latest cameras.

South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia have declared states of emergency, and residents are stocking up on essential supplies.
Officials say Florence is now a category four storm with 130mph (195km/h) winds, and gaining strength.
It is expected to strike the Carolinas by Thursday.
The weather system could reach category five as its draws strength from the warm Atlantic waters, say forecasters.
It would be the first category four storm to hit the region since Hugo ravaged North Carolina in 1989, wreaking $7bn (£5.3bn) in damage and claiming 49 lives.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) says Florence has the makings of an "extremely dangerous" meteorological event.
It may bring catastrophic levels of rain and flooding to coastal and inland regions.

Cameras outside the International Space Station captured dramatic views of rapidly strengthening Hurricane Florence at 8:10 a.m. EDT Sept. 10 as it moved in a westerly direction across the Atlantic, headed for a likely landfall along the eastern seaboard of the U.S. late Thursday or early Friday. Now a major hurricane with winds of 115 miles an hour and increasing, the National Hurricane Center says Florence’s forecast track will take the system over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas Tuesday and Wednesday, and Florence will approach the coast of South Carolina or North Carolina on Thursday. The station was flying 255 miles over the storm at the time this video was captured.

The rare viral infection was recorded on Friday in a Nigerian national staying at a naval base in Cornwall, Public Health England (PHE) said.
The patient was transferred to the expert infectious disease unit at the Royal Free Hospital in London on Saturday morning.
They are believed to have contracted the infection in Nigeria before travelling to the UK.
PHE said monkeypox does not spread easily and most patients recover within a few weeks, but it can cause severe illness in some people.

A huge earthquake has struck off the coast of Fiji. The powerful 7.8 magnitude tremor hit 66 miles east of the Fijian capital of Suva at 4.39pm BST (3.49am Friday local time).
The deep earthquake struck 377 miles under the surface, according to data from earthquake monitoring service the US Geological Survey (USGS).
Its depth meant only light shaking was felt on the surface.
No tsunami warnings have been issued following the quake.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said: “Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat because the earthquake is located too deep inside the Earth.”
The eastern margin of the Australia plate is one of the most sesimically active areas of the world due to high rates of convergence between the Australia and Pacific plates. In the region of New Zealand, the 3000 km long Australia-Pacific plate boundary extends from south of Macquarie Island to the southern Kermadec Island chain. It includes an oceanic transform (the Macquarie Ridge), two oppositely verging subduction zones (Puysegur and Hikurangi), and a transpressive continental transform, the Alpine Fault through South Island, New Zealand.
Since 1900 there have been 15 M7.5+ earthquakes recorded near New Zealand. Nine of these, and the four largest, occurred along or near the Macquarie Ridge, including the 1989 M8.2 event on the ridge itself, and the 2004 M8.1 event 200 km to the west of the plate boundary, reflecting intraplate deformation. The largest recorded earthquake in New Zealand itself was the 1931 M7.8 Hawke's Bay earthquake, which killed 256 people. The last M7.5+ earthquake along the Alpine Fault was 170 years ago; studies of the faults' strain accumulation suggest that similar events are likely to occur again.

The website takes Google’s familiar approach and design for search and applies it to datasets published across the web. So if you need to look at historical weather trends, you can use a simple query like “daily weather” to begin your research. Plus, the engine supports shortcuts that work on Google’s regular search tool, like ‘weather site:noaa.gov’ to retrieve results only from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration agency in the US.
The company explained that the new tool scrapes government databases, public sources, digital libraries, and personal websites to track down the datasets you’re looking for. If they’re structured using schema.org’s markup or similar equivalents described by the W3C, Google can find it. It already supports multiple languages and will add support for more of them soon.

A powerful earthquake has rocked the city of Sapporo in northern Japan just hours after large parts of the south of the country were battered by the biggest typhoon to hit in 25 years.
The Magnitude 6.7 (Downgraded to 6.6) quake struck 70 miles south of Sapporo on the island of Hokkaido, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
Residents in the city were woken up by strong shaking shortly after 7pm BST (3am Thursday local time) as the earth moved for around 20 seconds.
Japanese TV showed damaged buildings and quoted police as saying some people had been trapped in collapsed structures.

At first it seemed likely that the tiny hole had come from a micrometeoroid impact - one of the many bullets of debris that whizz around in space.
The theory was even supported by former astronaut Scott Kelly, who explained that this sort of thing happens all the time.
But as the inquiry progressed, the hole began to look more and more like it came not from the outside, but from the inside.
"We are considering all the theories," said Dmitry Rogozin, head of Roscosmos, according to the Russian news agency Tass.
"The one about a meteorite impact has been rejected because the spaceship's hull was evidently impacted from inside".
"It was done by a human hand - there are traces of a drill sliding along the surface," confirmed Rogozin.
Rogozin assured the media and the public that the Russian space agency was doing everything it could to find the culprit.
"It is a matter of honour for Energia Rocket and Space Corporation to find the one responsible for that, to find out whether it was an accidental defect or a deliberate spoilage and where it was done - either on Earth or in space," he said, referring to the Russian manufacturer of the space craft.

Evacuation advisories were issued for more than 300,000 people as the wind and rain from Typhoon Jebi began to intensify on Tuesday afternoon. Most of those advised to leave their homes and head to 1,500 temporary shelters were in the western port city of Kobe.
The meteorological agency said in a televised warning the system could trigger violent winds, landslides and flooding in the southern and southwestern parts of the archipelago, as well as high tides, lightning and tornadoes.
The prime minister, Shinzo Abe, urged residents to “evacuate early” and cancelled a planned trip to Kyushu in Japan’s south-west to oversee the government’s response.

According to the antiquities ministry, the neolithic site was found in Tell el Samara, a site 140km (87 miles) north of the capital Cairo.
Chief archaeologist Frederic Gio said his team discovered silos of animal bones and food which indicated that the area was inhabited by humans as early as 5,000 BC.
Modern research considers the famous pyramids in Giza to have begun to be built in 2,500 BC.
According to the ministry, the site contains a number of habitations which date to different periods.
By recovering organic material from the site, scientists will be able to put together the different ways in which prehistoric societies lived in the Nile delta.

The idea here is that even when a universe ends and a new one begins, the background radiation from decaying black holes of the previous universe remains. A theory such as this isn’t much good without some kind of concrete foundation of data to back it up, so the researchers began hunting for what they call “Hawking points.” Named for Stephen Hawking, Hawking points are areas where the researchers believe the leftover radiation from now-extinct black holes still exists.
The team’s theory has been a hot topic for researchers, with plenty of naysayers claiming that these “points” are merely the result of the random scattering of the cosmic background radiation. To remove as much doubt as possible, the team created randomized maps of background radiation and attempted to spot similar points. The random data didn’t replicate the phenomenon, so the the researchers believe their theory is sound, and that the Hawking points are indeed the last remaining traces of long-dead black holes from previous versions of our own universe.

Harvard Professor David Sinclair and researchers from the University of New South Wales developed the new process, which involves reprogramming cells.
Dr Sinclair said the technique could allow people to regenerate organs, and even allow paralysis sufferers to move again, with human trials due within two years.
The same researchers also found they could increase the lifespan of mice by ten per cent by giving them a vitamin B derivative pill.
They also said the pill led to a reduction in age-related hair loss.
Professor Sinclair said he hoped the pill would be available to the public within five years and cost the same each day as a cup of coffee.
