transform! europe, has commissioned a team of researchers on an investigation of how investment funds and other financial actors are taking over elderly care homes all around the European Union. The report presented in the webinar is entitled "The Happy Few: How European Elderly Care Has Been Financialised, How Benefits From It, and Which Counterstrategies To Deploy". It builds on an impressive European-wide collaboration between eight researchers, mapping the way financial corporations have been taking over the elderly care sector in six countries (France, Sweden, Germany, Spain, Croatia, and Portugal).
The report makes three crucial points: 1) the financialisation of elderly care is spreading, 2) it is dangerous for patients and care workers, 3) but it is not an inevitable trend. Even though it happens in many countries at the same time, it is driven by a small number of very large groups located in 2-3 countries, that spread financial logics all around Europe in a top-down manner. It can be countered by deploying activist strategies against these actors at the European level, and we map the successful strategies that have already been experimented in particular countries.
The presentation of this study to journalists and broader audience took place online on the 11th of Spetember with Théo Bourgeron (coordinator of the study), Ayoze Alfageme Ramirez (one of the authors and co-responsible for the analysis of the Spanish case) and Cornelia Hildebrandt (co-vice president of transform! europe). The webinar was moderated by Tatiana Moutinho (facilitator of transform! europe).
