Outer Worlds 2 is a continuation of the futuristic storyline set up by the first series entry developed by Obsidian in 2019, this time trading Halcyon for a new system of planets and space stations in Arcadia around 50 years into future, while still having the same goal of stopping an existential crisis that threatens the colony using all of the Roleplay mechanics and companions at your disposal.
Vying for control is the now combined conglomerate known as Auntie's Choice and the Order Of The Ascendant, a movement based upon science & spirituality. In between them both is the Protectorate, a military organisation who see themselves as the ones to control the crisis. We play as a member of the Earth Directorate, who send their agents out into colonies that show times of hardship and throughout the playthrough we'll need to work with and take action against all of these major factions, who themselves see the threat of the rift openings in different ways.
Like the first Outer Worlds, we're given our own ship in the Incognito, which we're shown as the game begins, heading into an important Protectorate facility in order to investigate the rifts in space that have been opening up recently. After the mission ends in failure, with fellow agent de Vries betrayal, we then head onto the first location of the game in Paradise Island where the journey into stopping de Vries from opening more rifts up begins.
