In this video from Berklee Online’s Practicing Techniques for Musicians course, instructor Barbara LaFitte shares a practicing technique that involves reading the music sheet backwards, starting with the first bar, moving on to the second-to-last bar, and so on. LaFitte explains that you should play note-by-note backwards and keep adding a new note as you go, a strategy that relies on the belief that your brain becomes familiarized with the last motifs as you play them over and over again, so it is easier to add the first few notes at the start. By doing this, you can learn any piece faster, and it is a good strategy to understand how to play more complex pieces.

Barbara LaFitte held the English Horn position in the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra from 1994-2020, where she worked with John Williams and Keith Lockhart. She was also the principal oboist in the Boston Ballet Orchestra, the Boston Classical Orchestra, and the Rhode Island Philharmonic, as well as a member of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. She can be heard on two recordings nominated for Grammy Awards: Boston Modern Orchestra Project’s recording of Stephen Mackey’s “Dreamhouse,” and Danilo Perez’s highly acclaimed jazz recording, “Providencia.” LaFitte is also the oboist on the theme music for the PBS program, “Frontline.” She has been a professor on the faculty of Berklee College of Music in Boston since 1994. She has also coached contemporary chamber ensembles and taught Woodwind Pedagogy at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. LaFitte presents masterclasses about topics such as circular breathing, audition preparation, Nicolas Slonimsky, and more.

For this video, Caraluzzi invited Professor Craig Juricka to demonstrate the same yoga poses in two different bodies, highlighting how they can look and feel different to everybody. For the Sun Salutation, you can start in a comfortable seat, breathing, and softening the muscles of your body. Then, you can move on to the “table top” position and start doing some “cat cows.” Push backward, entering into a “child’s pose,” where you can relax and take a couple of breaths. Then, move to the “table top” position again to transition to a “downward-facing dog” and stay there for a few breaths. On the “exhale” make your way to the top of the mat, towards a forward fold and, on your “inhale,” transition to “mountain pose.” For this series, use your exhale to forward fold again and an inhale to “halfway lift.” After your last “forward fold,” transition into a plank, then down to the belly, into a “baby cobra,” lifting your head and chest from the ground and looking forward. Use your inhale to look up and your exhale to look down. From “cobra,” transition to “downward-dog” to “mountain pose” to “Warrior I.” Caraluzzi explains that you can repeat this sequence as many times as you want, and then go back to a comfortable position or “corpse pose” to finish with deep breaths. His specialties range from Latin American rhythms to the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques for music. As a guitarist, arranger, and musical director he has worked and recorded with artists from all over the world, including legendary Bossa Nova singer Maria Creuza, whose band he was a member of. He has edited a number of books for Hal Leonard and Warner Bros. Publications (Alfred Publications), and for his studies and research on machine learning and AI he has been invited as a speaker in congresses and seminars at some of the most prestigious technology universities, such as MIT and UC Berkeley. Dr. Arana earned his PhD from University of Buenos Aires (UBA-UNLZ) in 2022. ABOUT ENRIQUE GONZALEZ MÜLLER: After graduating from Berklee College of Music in 1999, Enrique Gonzalez Müller started his career as a music producer and engineer at the Plant Studios, working with artists like The Dave Matthews Band, Joe Satriani, Joan Baez and Les Claypool. In his home country of Venezuela, hes produced many chart-topping albums for Caramelos de Cianuro, Viniloversus, Desorden Publico and in 2009 his collaboration with Los Amigos Invisibles won the band a Latin Grammy Award for their album Commercial. In Italy, among many collaborations, Gonzalez Müller has produced, arranged and mixed albums for L’Aura and scored a #1 hit with Teach Me Again from Elisa and Tina Turner. In the US, he has recently worked with Jason Newsted (former Metallica), the Kronos Quartet, Nine Inch Nails and toured with Wynton Marsalis as well as many up and coming artists. In 2015, Enrique was the recipient of Berklees Distinguished Faculty Award for his innovative work as an educator. When you first begin work on a song, it is important to think about duration, number of bars per section, repetition, and the possible modification of tempo and key. As you go from the preproduction process to the production process you’ll want to make sure your song has enough contrast in the melody, harmony, and rhythm. Uslusoy further explains how to use multiple features inside Pro Tools to program drum sets and bass parts and use MIDI pads to ensure a smooth production process. This course also gives you an overview on how to execute vocal comping, manually editing pads, quantizing notes, using parametric EQ band to adjust frequencies, and applying different reverb plug-ins to add special effects to your tracks. Lastly, you will learn how to effectively implement dynamic processors to adjust loudness in both MIDI and audio tracks in order to produce a mixed and mastered song in your home studio.
