Onassis ParungaoUFC 7 Sept. 1995 Alternate Match Highlights taped from an old pay-per view video....During those early UFC days, there were no wieght classes and no gloves. It wasn't as organized as it currently is in the modern day. Head Butts and all that nonsense allowed made for bloody messes.
The format was for a Bracketed Tournament. Meaning you litterally had to fight 3 fights in one night to win.
This was an alternate match, which meant that if someone was injured fighting in the main draw...then an alternate could take his place for the prize.
I was the smallest man in the tourney and of course an unknown. Still i'm thankful they let me in as an alternate.
I have respect for anyone who sets foot in the ring. I learned allot from these experiences and just as MMA and Martial Arts has been constantly evolving and improving...I feel that I have also personally improved allot since those days.
My purpose for putting it up after so long was mostly for posterity I guess. That and the old VHS video was begining to get White Fuzzy Spots on the film itself. I figured I better save it before total degredation.
My training was a serious concentration of both my fathers' Pinoy Arts and also traditional Hung Gar Kuen.
I've never shown this anyone before because frankly I don't know if anyone likes seeing themselves or what they LOOKED like more than 16yrs into the past. I can't stand looking at it because I believe that I've matured into a much better fighter now and so has my understanding of Hung.
I must stress that MMA is still a SPORT and DOES NOT Equate to real world Self Defense. I think that any mature martial artist recognizes that there is a clear difference between them.
Once a person realizes this, then they can see that Traditional arts are still valid and have a place in our modern world.

The sword I'm using is not wimpy...it does not bend unless you have the perfect energy.
"Kunlun is a mystic mountain in China, renown for its lethal sword masters. This set reveals to you the rare “Jan Ghim” style of sword play. Unlike most flowing sword styles (known as “Hung Ghim” - different than Hung Gar) Jan Ghim develops forceful thrusts that could punch your sword point through armor."
I learned this set in the 90's a couple different ways:
1st version is the one I learned from Sifu Lam...his version was more controlled and balanced.
2nd was from Sigung Chiu Wai; his version was a little different.
This particular version is how I play this for contrasting: parrying vs the SPEED of the attacking point. It's a demo after all. :)

The 2nd video is from 2017 (this year)
I don't post solo sets very often...there are too many Hung Style judges out there with strong opinions thinking it has to be done "their way".
For those who know "Moi Fah"...there are some great applications that apply from this set.
To be fair, the dude seems quite skilled...I just couldn't let his comment about emptiness go. Not when it's something that I use regularly and can make it work.

In this video I discuss about my frustration in seeing this...

I hope Christopher J Crogan doesn't mind that I grabbed my demo off his page. Credit to him of course because he was the one nice enough to post it for me.
“Ha say Fu is not actually the style name however, it is a facilitation of the meaning for modern use. H.S.F., or Lower Four Counties, refers to a region in the Fujian province located south of the capitol city of Fuzhou. It also includes Quanzhou, Zhangzhou and Yong’an. It was the martial arts practiced in this region and is simply known as Hung Kuen.”
This Ha Say fu Book is really an important milestone. I had been begging my Sifu to allow me to release photos and/OR videos (old 8mm film stock) of himself learning this style in Hong Kong way back in the 1960’s. He’s always been very modest about it. In a way I understand, perhaps I would not want videos put out of myself just starting out in a style. Or he had other reasons, nonetheless it doesn’t invalidate the style.
In the past since Si Gung Leung Wah Chew was secretive and didn’t explain much history to the young man (Sifu Lam) that was learning from him. It’s been a hard pill for me(a student of Sifu Lam) to swallow… to keep quiet whilst so many A-holes have accused Wing Lam of making this style up.
Sifu has always been so humble and didn’t care, but all of that is explained in this book. He goes into the details of his fortunate circumstance to learn. Plus, to top it all off… the actual training photos that I have been asking for so long. Finally, I thumb my nose to all those nay-sayers. Call me bitter or vengeful, but they deserve it and they know who they are.Hung Gar Traditional Skills 3 - Free DrillsOnassis Parungao2015-09-21 | Respeto a mi Kung Fu hermano Gabriel y gracias por hacer esta película. I'm Onassis Parungao, I was the 1st (Filipino) Hung Kyun fighter in the UFC...# 7. I also fought in the Russian AFC and have won 2 Chinese San Shou belts at 85kg. I've traveled to Shaolin Temple and had the pleasure of being instructed in San Da. I scored the highest in my class group.
If there's one thing I really know how to do, it's to apply traditional kung fu concepts in a more realistic fight setting.
Applying kung fu, especially Hung Style & Taiji in a more modern setting is something that I get paid to teach. If you would like to learn properly, please honor me with a seminar at your school and I will do my best to share my knowledge. Nobody else from the Hung Gar community has realy come forth and given out this type of information yet. Mostly it's been, forms or foundation training. Why? Because in truth, most of the schools I see out there DO NOT know how to apply their bridging concepts on NON traditional people. So they end up training forms but fighting like Kick Boxers. The following are some concepts off a simple methodology like "Cat Washing Face" (if you know HUNG) Which is similar to fast "Pak Sao/Lop Sao-Lead Jab" combo if you want to think of it that way.
These types of things are traditional Hung Kuen adapted to Modern Approaches and I personaly can do them VS any guy trying to box me. I have done it and I can do it. Application is my speciality, anyone who's met me knows I can apply Hung. I'm only sharing alittle lately because I'm sick of seeing crappy forms junkies pretending to know Hung...total BS!!
Examples:
1) Cat washing face
2) Double Butterfly Palms...Divide and Leak
3) 1/2 step Gold star punching ..ala Sao Choi ...destroy bridge
4) Fierce tiger (double claw method) - Single tiger
5) Instead of hard power, I follow his parry.
6) ect ect.
*** Double Butterfly palms is for closer quarter when then guy is pressing you more...Use a standard Kiu Sao in the same instance as another option.
Hung Is primarilly a tiger foundation style..."the hand never comes back empty" is vital concept and it is not learned very well when you use gloves.
I never say to a person. "Ok punch me with THAT HAND" Real learning doesn't work that way. Whenever someone says, "ok can you do that to me" I say bring it and set it up off what they give. That's the real way.
If you want to fight modern... you have to start learning how to counter what modern fighters do 1st. IE BOX....then work other formats as necessary.
Hung Kuen is very much like Wing Chun...in that you have to really touch hands in all kinds of manners and VS. all types of people. That's why I admire the guts of many of the WC players out there.
I love to touch hands with them...but with one caveat; NEVER CHI SAO a Chunner thier way exactly!! (that's there game)
Upon finding the Choy Chang, (Head of Lettuce) notice the Lion makes 3 difference approaches Left - Right - Center, with 3 separate skill sets.
Lion Dancing takes allot of stamina to do a parade down a street and end off with a finishing show. Which is why you usually see younger guys doing it and the coaches in the band. haha.

Either you're conditioned and ready or not. Real Iron Palm is just relaxed and focused power putting your energy (Chi) into and through the target.
!!! For Example: notice Chet Braun at around ( 20 sec ), see how calm he is and how he never raises his hand higher than shoulder level. His Back hand break is effortless and shows true skill.
Steve Kleppe same deal, not many people could do 3 concrete bricks WITHOUT spacers and make it look so easy.
For those who know Ken Louie...he's definately eccentric and does some powerful things.
All three demonstrators were taught Authentic Iron Palm, from Sifu Lam Kwong Wing as handed down to him via Yim Shang Mo.... Ku Yu Cheung Lineage.
Great Kung Fu by all three demonstrators! I'm proud to cal them my Big Brothers.
I rarely if ever utilize such practices anymore. Currently I'd rather teach live drills and reactions in shorter bursts but nothing that is choreographed. That way the student learns to react more and not just memorize. I think there is a time in everyones' career in which they learn sparring sets like this. But then as a person matures, they must evolve to free fighting.
Sorry about the videoquality, I am trying to save some old VHS tapes before they completely degrade.
