Tired of the basic rectangle crop in Microsoft PowerPoint? Want to create stunning, professionally designed slides with custom-shaped images, just like you would in Adobe Photoshop? You can do it all without ever leaving PowerPoint!
In this quick tutorial, I reveal a powerful trick to crop any picture into a custom, freeform shape. We'll cover two methods: the super-fast "Merge Shapes" technique for newer versions of PowerPoint, and a clever workaround using "Picture Fill" for older versions that don't have this feature.

📌 METHOD 1: For Newer Versions of PowerPoint (with Merge Shapes)
Draw Your Shape: Go to Insert - Shapes and use the Freeform tool to draw the exact shape you want over your picture.
Select Both: Click the background picture FIRST, then hold down the Shift key and click your new shape.
Merge & Intersect: Navigate to the Shape Format tab, click the Merge Shapes dropdown, and select Intersect.
Done! Your image is now perfectly cropped to your custom shape.
📌 METHOD 2: For Older Versions of PowerPoint (No Merge Shapes)
Copy Picture: First, make sure your picture is on the slide and copy it to your clipboard (Ctrl + C).
Draw Your Shape: Just like before, draw a Freeform Shape for your crop.
Format Shape: Right-click the shape and choose Format Shape.
Picture Fill: Under Shape Options - Fill, select Picture or texture fill. Click Clipboard to paste your copied image into the shape.
Adjust the Crop: Go to the Picture Format tab, click the Crop dropdown, and choose Fill. Now you can resize and move the picture within the shape to get it just right.
Remove Outline: Finally, go to Shape Format - Shape Outline and select No Outline for a clean finish.
